Chapter 599: Chapter 593. Deadly Chase
For two seconds, they were blinking wordlessly. The first thing that came up in Radia’s head was ’of course’ and he immediately clasped his hands. "Go; I’ll manage the things here and inform the ship crew."
"Fuck--alright," Bassena nodded and turned toward the East. "Zein--"
"I’m done," Zein jumped off the platform that Bassena made to connect the island and the bridge.
At the same time, Han Shin had finished his critical healing--the rest could be handled by serums and the rest of the healers. "Let’s go."
"Let’s!" Zhan slammed his halberd down. Unlike before, his gaze had deepened and his expression cold.
Agni and Ron were returning to the Borderland, and Sierra had to be transferred to the main troops. Bassena had no heart to take Iore, who was still trying to get the members of Team 1 from the bottom of the lake, so they were down by four people. Still, they had the Eastern Sun and her assistant this time, so things kind of evened out.
Bassena raised his hand and the scattering darkness formed a giant serpent once again. "Barrier; attach it to the top of the head," he told Senan and Cohen, who were in charge of their safety still. "Aunty, we’ll ride my serpent."
"A-Aunty?!" the Eastern Sun parted her lips, looking horrified. But there was nothing she could say because she was probably older than these kids’ parents, ugh--
While she was lamenting about the curse of time, the Giant Serpent had finished being resummoned. A protective barrier was placed on top of the flat head to make sure the people standing there wouldn’t get shredded by the endlessly moving stakes, and now the remaining dungeon team had climbed to the barrier.
"Get on!" Bassena shouted from the top of his serpent.
"F-fu--" the old lady who felt sad about the passage of time swallowed his curse. "Fine!"
Radia chuckled and waved his hand at the Giant Serpent moved across the lake like a ship that was made of nothing but propelers. But the smile soon faded from his lips as he took a deep breath and turned around. "Let’s get this over with."
* * *
The giant serpent rushed toward the East. It was the only path they had yet to explore, so they had to put extra care into choosing the path because there was no longer a scout among them. Thankfully, the Eastern Sun’s assistant had a bit of tracking ability, so they could avoid getting strayed from the path.
"I’ll guide you while we’re on our way," Zein said, scooting to the back so he could see all the espers. Just for extra precaution, Bassena made a short wall at the back of the barrier so Zein wouldn’t fall.
The Eastern Sun and her assistant were looking at each other curiously. Was he going to call them one by one? No--more importantly, was he going to guide all of them?
As a matter of fact, yes--in the next second, they felt a guiding sensation even though Zein did not touch them. He activated the Saint’s staff until his mana was empty, and his vessel was also cleared by the Saint’s staff’s function, so Zein was in peak condition. Totally cleansing the espers would be too much, but guiding the rest of the fight would be possible.
The rest of Zein’s colleagues exhaled slowly, savoring the guiding in a momentary rest. They had been through intense battle without rest earlier, and they would face an even more intense battle, so they had to take it easy while they could. They sat down and let their muscles relax, letting the soothing guiding caress their system.
"Wait--you can guide without touching?" the Eastern Sun asked with widened eyes.
"Yes, just not as fast," Zein said nonchalantly.
The assistant blinked. "Not...as fast?"
"Yes," Zein just replied briefly and turned toward Bassena who sat in front of him. "Bas, we need to find a way to attack the Fallen Star."
"Right, that barrier is a trouble," Zhan chimed in with a grumble. He was still salty that his ultimate attack was being staved off twice. What a waste of mana!
The Eastern Sun tilted her head. "What happened?"
So the ones who still had energy--Zhan and Bassena in particular--explained the event of chasing the Fallen Star to the dungeon entrance and their unfortunate failure.
"Dispersing magic and repelling physical force?" for some reason, the lady sounded more annoyed than even Zhan. "What the fuck are they? God?!"
"Well, yes?" Han Shin shrugged. "At least they used to..."
"Oh, right--but what then? Hmm...perhaps the attacks weren’t strong enough?" she stroked her chin.
"There’s that possibility, but it’s equally bad if we have to use high-intensity magic all the time," Bassena sighed.
He had yet to attack the ’core body’ of the Fallen Star with his own attack, but if even a five-star’s attack like Zhan’s--which was known for its high damage--could not graze the barrier, it would mean only him and the lady might be able to.
Didn’t sound very efficient.
"True," the Eastern Sun nodded in agreement and clasped her hands. "Oh, this is getting interesting!"
Zein narrowed his eyes, tempted to make his guiding a bit more prickly. But he didn’t want to waste any energy at this point. It wasn’t like he had a beef with this lady, but he was rather annoyed at the cheerful connotation amidst this serious atmosphere.
Perhaps because everyone who had been fighting the Fallen Star was seriously thinking about how to end it, or perhaps he had just reached that stage when he felt so exhausted about this whole three years--almost four years--of journey.
He had to remind himself that this lady had only been in the Deathzone for a few hours and had spent her time being one of the strongest for a few decades, so he just let her carefree attitude go based on that and pondered about the more pressing matter; how to get through to the Fallen Star’s main body.
If regular attacks could not get through, what about something non-regular? Zein thought deeply. For example, something that could destroy Its fragments, for example...
"Opposing energy," Zein muttered.
"Hmm?"
"Bas, when you were in that hyperbolic chamber training orb, did you realize that your mana and cosmic energy are different?" Zein raised his head.
The Eastern Sun perked her ears. Hyperbolicchamber? For training where he could feel a cosmic energy?
"Well...yeah, I think so?" Bassena rubbed his lips and frowned deeply to recall that moment--it was already four years ago after all. "I wouldn’t say they are completely different, but...it’s like a branch."
"Huh?"
"The power that humans use basically comes with the Celestial Beings’ help, but not ’from’ them," Han Shin, who had been quietly listening to their conversation, gave more insight to the clueless others. "The Celestial Being’s ’grace’ is opening the humans’ potential and gates for mana originally hidden in this planet."
"So you can call it a variation?"
"Yes."
"But the core of it is still the Celestial Being’s power, isn’t it?" Zein asked, sweeping his gaze to the espers who had now turned to look at him. "The cosmic energy that started it all."
The Eastern Sun’s hazel eyes narrowed. "Where are you going with this?"
"Cosmic energy is the opposite of the corrupted energy that the Fallen Star uses--or rather, its weakness," Zein said, and proceeded to remind them of how the Fallen Star couldn’t use it because it had been ’expelled’ from that power system.
That was why they threw the fragments into the star corridor earlier.
"Ah!" the Eastern Sun clasped her hands and nodded as she could finally follow it. "So you’re saying we might be able to attack it using that cosmic energy?"
"Yes," Zein nodded.
The ones who naturally had this power were, of course, the guides--especially Zein, who had the raw power of Setnath inside him. What the espers had, meanwhile, had been mixed and diluted by the natural evolution of Earth’s power, creating their own identity.
"Unfortunately, mine and the shards’ are not designed for offense," Zein sighed heavily before looking at the espers. "But if you can extract the cosmic energy entangling in your mana..."
"Is that possible?" Zhan widened his eyes, gripping his halberd tightly.
Zein looked at Bassena, whose frown had gotten even deeper. "Bas, you’ve spent a thousand days in Celestial War," he said. "You must be familiar with the difference."
"I’ll try," Bassena nodded and shifted to a meditative position. The amber eyes closed and they could see he was in a deep state of concentration.
Thankfully though, the Giant Serpent still moved as usual. They had left a rocky terrain that separated them from the Eastern side of the continent and started to cross a vast, empty land with dry and cracked ground. It was starting to slope at this point, and a different kind of wind was blowing against them.
"Seems like we’re almost there, Ma’am," the assistant told them.
It was at that moment they finally got a signal from the beacon, and their commlink was blasting with notifications from the ship.
[...port, report; trying once again--we haven’t seen anything resembling the Fallen Star you told us about, but we have another problem] it was the Captain instead of Gus or Senia.
Han Shin swiftly pressed the receiving button. "We’re on our way, what happened?"
[Dungeons, a lot of it]
"Ah, it’s happening here too--"
[I know that, but...] the Captain’s voice sounded more urgent by the second. [They’re at the sea]
