Chapter 321: Chapter 313. Angler

Within the inadequate light around the lake, the blue eyes shone brightly, reflecting the dancing flame for the campfire. "You’re not my type," the guide said calmly.

The man’s aloofness was intriguing, despite the clear disadvantageous of his position. Was he just acting calm, since there was nothing he could do? The female five-star esper, Ali, looked at the guide amusedly. She was supposed to bring the guide immediately after the Serpent Lord got sealed, but that wouldn’t be fun, would it?

She stopped at the edge of the dock, across the guide, and tilted her head in ponder. "Hmm...could it be...you’re not actually alone?"

The blue eyes blinked, and a mana barrier shimmered around the guide; the kind that came from a skill, not from an equipment. Right after, she could hear groans from her earpiece, which meant the two scouts hiding in the forest were being attacked.

Her brow arched. "Oh, how curious. We didn’t sense anyone all this time. Where did you hide those people?"

The guide shrugged. "What makes you think I’ll tell you?"

"Oh, come on. Have a little fun!" she chuckled, clearly did not faze even after knowing there were other people there.

Well, to be fair, every five-star esper--especially damage dealers--thought they were Gods, except when Bassena Vaski was present. But Bassena Vaski was being sealed in a dimensional space, and even if he managed to kill the other esper and got out, he would appear in another location.

So, basically, in her eyes, she was the goddess tonight.

"Fine," the guide rolled his eyes and waved his hand slightly. Immediately, she sensed more presence coming from three points; somewhere in the forest, somewhere from the helipad, and...

She turned his head; ten, twelve--no, fourteen figures were standing around the house. Inside, on the balcony, on top of the roof. Truthfully, it was quite surprising, even for her. The espers who came with her--those who belonged to that manchild Belthera--flinched as they knew they were outnumbered. She just scoffed, however.

"Pfft--you think bringing people will change anything?" her eyes gleamed as the air around her vibrated from the rousing of mana. "With these bunch of weaklings?"

The heavy pressure of mana spread around her, swirling the air into countless wind scythes that immediately lurched in every direction.

Of course, including the guide in front of him.

Before the wind scythe managed to crash into the barrier, however, it hit a massive metal shield and dispersed. A middle-aged esper stood in front of the guide, glaring viciously at her. "Are you alright, Young Master?"

"I’m fine," Zein said, sighing internally at the older man’s insistence on calling him ’young master’. But this was hardly a time to nitpick, so he let it go.

The rest of the scythes were accurately flying toward the other espers--the members of Iron Shield--which fortunately deflected the attack adequately. But they had to jump out of the house while doing it, causing them to clash with their enemy.

"O-ho? You even bring your nanny?" Ali raised her brow, didn’t seem to care that her attack was being deflected. She only did it to make these people move anyway.

"What’s wrong with that?" Zein replied nonchalantly. Technically, Senan probably would be his caretaker if nothing went wrong twenty-nine years ago, so calling him his nanny wasn’t so wrong.

"Yeah, what’s wrong with that?" the old man even repeated it with a smile, looking happy when Zein did not reject the notion that he was Zein’s ’nanny’.

The female five-star laughed out loud. "Oh, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that," she cackled, before smiling deeply while raising her hands. "It just means we gain another pawn to make you submit!"

As she said the last word, the air around her swirled wildly like a tornado. It grew wider and wider until it encompassed the section in front of the lake, battering the other espers as well as trapping them; even those who were meant to be her ally.

Zein looked at those espers, some of whom used to be part of Ishtera’s household. He didn’t mean to have them involved in this before, but he wasn’t able to trick Senan. It seemed like Arlo had told the old man that Zein had gotten sick the other day, and that information led to another.

It was annoying, but the female esper was right. Zein couldn’t bear seeing these people--his people, at any rate--get killed because of him.

Thankfully, the members of Iron Shield easily got ahold of themselves and got into formation--probably because they were family. Even though they were only two or three-star espers, they coordinated well and managed to shield themselves from the ferocious wind while countering the enemy with long-range attacks. At the very least, they managed to keep the other espers busy.

But Senan was only a four-star esper, and he was gradually getting shoved back as the female esper created several whips made of condensed wind and battered the metal shield.

"Pfft--you’re not seriously thinking you can protect your young master with only that shield, aren’t you?" she laughed mockingly. "If you resist so much, my attack might land on him, you know!"

’Might’ was an understatement. The wind whips had struck the barrier several times, and each time it seemed like it was about to crack, Senan had to stack another barrier on top of it--which was why he couldn’t activate any other defensive skill.

"Just so you know, I only have to take him alive, so it doesn’t matter even if he lost a few limbs!"

Senan gritted his teeth and shouted. "Cohen!"

"What, you think calling someone will help you?" she continued to sneer.

But he realized after a few seconds that no one was actually attacking her. As she tilted her head in confusion, she felt several presences from outside of her wind domain. With the sound of agonizing screams, the wall of wind was breached.

No, not breached. To be exact, the two scouts that were hiding in the forest, as well as two other Celestia’s espers that were not inside her domain, were being shoved inside the whirlwind. They were being used as a shield for the espers who came through the forest and the helipad to come through unscathed.

She was still confused, though. What was the use of these additional manpower? They were still two or three-star garbage. Did these people really think adding a few flies would be enough to take her? She might not be a Ranker, she might not have a name in the world, but she was still a five-star wind elementalist nurtured by one of the Old Houses.

"They’re all here, Young Master," the old man said with bated breath.

She turned her head back to the guide and asked inquisitively. "What are you trying to do, Young Master?"

The Young Master in question, instead of answering, was raising his palm. A dull black dagger appeared in his hand then, and the blue eyes glint. "This."

He sliced his palm with the black dagger.

Unlike his mental space, the place where Bassena was transported into wasn’t dark. In fact, it was quite the opposite; a white space with no horizon in sight. No floor, no wall, nothing. It reminded him of a psychiatric ward.

He was floating--no, he was suspended in the air. His limbs were wrapped with what seemed like white bandages, or the straps of a strait-jacket.

Hmm...definitely a psychiatric ward.

Bassena tried to move his waist a bit, and the straps seemed to be made of elastic material. It felt heavy, and he couldn’t rip the thing with his physical power alone. When he roused his mana, however, he realized that it was harder for him to control his magic energy.

Interesting.

Thankfully, he was still able to harness his power, so he managed to free his right hand from the straps. The moment he did, however, new straps shot up from the foggy surrounding and immediately bound him again.

"I see," Bassena nodded. He concentrated his mana and exploded the magic energy to free all his limbs, and the same thing happened; his limbs were immediately bound. The new straps even bound his torso, rendering him immobile. "So it means to trap me."

"I suggest you stop your struggle, traitor."

The amber eyes flicked upward, and he saw the male five-star walking through the hazy boundary toward him. The man stopped a few meters away, however, smartly keeping his distance.

"Haha..." Bassena chuckled. "I thought I wiped you all, but to think some worms still wriggling around."

The male esper scowled, indignation palpable in his gaze. There was not much similarity between him and Bassena, aside from their bronze skins--albeit he was of a lighter shade. But it was clear from how he called Bassena that the man was part of the Golden Viper.

No wonder he looked so annoyed right off the bat.

"Hmm...I don’t recognize you, though," Bassena pondered. If the man was originally five-star, he should at least remember the face. But he never saw this man in the Viper’s Hall. "Did you run to your sponsor and beg for advancement items to seek revenge?"

"I didn’t run!" the esper spat angrily. "I was already there when you--"

He stopped immediately when he saw the glint inside the amber eyes, realizing he was too worked up and spilled something that shouldn’t be known.

"I see," Bassena smirked.

So, in the end, their conjecture was right; the one who ordered this was the sponsor behind Golden Viper in the past, which was now standing behind Varion Belthera.

The male esper pressed his lips, realizing his blunder. Well, it doesn’t matter, he thought. Not that this traitor would ever find out who his sponsor was. All he gotta do was wait until he received the signal from Ali, and he would dump Bassena inside a high-rank dungeon they had prepared in advance. Of course, he knew Bassena would be able to clear the dungeon on his own, but it would take the man at least a few hours, if not days.

And this time, there would be no guide to prevent him from erupting, so--

The male esper squinted. Hmm...? Why is this bastard getting blurry? It’s as if he’s dissipating...

"You know," Bassena smiled, the white part of his eyes suddenly turned dark. "You should have covered my eyes too."

"Eyes..?"

Inside the white void, dark tendrils shot out, like inks smearing an empty canvas. They wrapped around the male esper as if mirroring the strap binding, and before he could do anything, he felt a familiar sensation of being transported through dimensions.

"What--no!"

In the blink of an eye, he found himself looking at the scenery of a lake; dozens of people, and swirling wind vortex. As he fell to the ground, he saw Bassena Vaski appear behind the guide with a wide smile.

"Hello, honey," Bassena greeted the blue eyes cheerfully. "Do you miss me?"

"What--"

Before the female esper could finish getting surprised, and before the esper who entrapped Bassena even touched the ground, the Saint-class spoked through the night breeze.

[Nightfall]

And the darkness descended upon them.
