Chapter 964: Chapter 778: Peace Street is Not Peaceful
Luo Kai felt he couldn’t wait any longer.
Before he came, Captain Zheng had mentioned detecting five Abyss Darkness zones in one sweep.
Now, he was in the Heiyu District, Xu Shuo was in the Dongshan District, which meant at least three other areas still had unresolved Abyssal pollution issues.
And Xu Shuo had not responded for such a long time—not even with a quick “1.” It was highly likely that the situation on his end was too severe for him to take even a second to send a signal.
For someone like that to be so tense and cautious…
It must be at least a Level-4 Abyss, right?
Then what about the other locations?
These thoughts churned in Luo Kai’s mind, leaving him feeling uneasy. He stood up abruptly, vaulted out of the window, and landed in the pitch-black, dead-silent alleyway below.
As he leapt down, Qing’s figure also appeared in the alley.
The room upstairs was still engulfed in flames. Luo Kai removed the nearly burnt-out cigarette from his mouth and pressed it against the wall of the alleyway.
Whoosh—
The cigarette butt was originally just a spark.
But soon, that spark became a ferocious blaze.
The entire 50-meter alley was instantly consumed by roaring flames. The blood-red light of the fire resembled a writhing dragon, and the searing heat relentlessly licked away the darkness of the place.
From above, the alley looked like a burning eye of hell.
“Ah!”
Qing shrank into herself in the middle of the alley.
She glanced nervously at the flames on either side of her, hunching her shoulders and standing on tiptoe, as though trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
In the extreme heat, black sweat had already started to ooze from Qing’s skin, dripping to the ground and transforming into viscous Dark Matter.
Her pupils trembled slightly, with a faint crimson glow emerging in their depths.
Luo Kai looked at her impassively. “This is the last time I’ll say it: you either stay here and wait for me to come back, or—”
Hearing this, Qing raised her head to look at him.
In her pitch-black eyes, the hint of crimson seemed like flickering flames. But in truth, the surrounding fire could not reflect even a sliver of light on her body.
She was like a black hole, devouring all external illumination, leaving only absolute darkness.
After a brief silence—
Qing finally spoke.
“You… must not lie.”
Her voice was low and hoarse, like a ghost’s raspy groan forced up from the depths of its throat, chilling and eerie.
Luo Kai pulled another cigarette out of his pocket.
“You should understand, I’m not hesitating to fight you. It’s just that you clearly still have your uses.”
He lit the cigarette as he began walking away.
Qing stared intently at his retreating back.
It wasn’t until the flames on the walls started creeping toward the ground, slowly advancing toward her feet, that Qing finally broke her gaze. Her body melted into a puddle of black substance and seeped into the ground.
The darkness penetrated the soil and the stones.
But as it tried to spread further, it seemed to encounter an invisible barrier, unable to move even an inch forward.
To advance—
It would have to break through this barrier.
But the darkness itself would inevitably be worn down by the world’s “World Force.”
Corrosion would cancel each other out.
In the end, it would boil down to which side could hold out the longest—who could endure until the other was completely consumed and still have a sliver of strength left.
Unable to move forward,
The darkness reformed itself into the shape of a little girl.
She crouched deep beneath the surface, feeling that this spot was somewhat safer.
But…
She was so hungry.
…
…
Luo Kai walked straight out of the alley.
Behind him, the towering flames vanished entirely the moment his foot left the alley.
“Mr. Luo!”
“Mr. Luo, are you all right?”
“What’s the situation inside?”
The nearby stationed soldiers immediately ran up to him with anticipation.
Luo Kai paused and glanced back at the alley.
Compared to when he had first arrived, the darkness in the alley had now thinned significantly. The layered building walls were faintly visible, though the area remained utterly silent.
Because the largest monster inside hadn’t been dealt with.
So the place continued to exude an unending Abyssal aura.
Sparing it a long, quiet look,
Luo Kai finally spoke to the squad leader: “Keep this place sealed off. The monster and the Abyss Rift inside haven’t been fully resolved yet. I need to handle something else first.”
The squad leader was momentarily stunned. “Understood!”
Luo Kai turned and headed toward his car.
But after a few steps, he suddenly stopped and looked back.
“By the way, it’s fine if you stick close, but make sure the others stay as far away as possible. This kind of pollution… you could think of it as radiation,” Luo Kai said.
The soldiers froze momentarily, then saluted him resolutely without a word.
Someone had to guard the area no matter what.
And to ensure no one succumbed to the strain, the squad leader had already implemented a rotating schedule, with purification tools prepared on-site.
Seeing this, Luo Kai said no more.
As he walked, he pulled out his phone and made a call.
The line connected almost immediately.
“Mr. Luo?”
“Captain Zheng, besides Dongshan District and Heiyu District, where else is there trouble?”
“There’s also Donghe District. But aside from you and Mr. Xu’s locations, we’ve dispatched people to the other areas. However… In short, tonight’s situation seems a bit complicated. Mr. Luo, you should come directly; I’m currently in Heiyu District, at Peace Street.”
“Heiyu District, Peace Street?”
Luo Kai slowed his pace slightly.
His thoughts churned, and he immediately remembered.
The most severe Abyssal pollution incident in this world’s recent history had occurred on Peace Street. Back then, they’d even glimpsed shadows of an Abyss Demon.
And that location…
It was where Xu Shuo currently lived.
“Got it. Which specific location?”
As Luo Kai asked, images of Xu Shuo’s hideout being raided flashed through his mind. That guy’s home on Peace Street truly lived up to its ironically chaotic reputation.
But Captain Zheng’s response was unexpected.
“At the discount shopping center.”
…
When Luo Kai returned to the Archway, he saw that a nearby building had already been requisitioned. Inside, Ji Xiaoxia had regained her self-consciousness and was chatting with Shao Dandan.
Seeing him return, Shao Dandan’s eyes lit up.
“Big shot, all done?”
“Not even close.”
With the cigarette still in his mouth, Luo Kai said, “The Abyss Rift and the monster are still inside. But I need to leave for a while; keep an eye on this place.”
Shao Dandan was immediately full of questions.
The Abyss Rift and the monster were still there…
Then what did you go in for?
Did you go in to dance with the monsters and then just walk out?
Seemingly catching her unspoken sarcasm,
Luo Kai continued, “Don’t worry, the largest monster shouldn’t make any moves. But the Abyssal pollution might create new creatures. Check the alley periodically, and if there’s any situation you can’t handle, call me. I’ll be in Heiyu District.”
Shao Dandan froze for a second. “Alright, you’re the boss here now. We’ll do as you say.”
…
After giving his instructions, Luo Kai drove off without delay.
Shao Dandan watched the car leave thoughtfully.
Judging by his words,
It seemed there wasn’t just one Abyss pollution site in Heiyu District tonight.
When she’d been hauled out of school for this mission earlier, she’d only heard about Abyss pollution appearing—she had no idea about the specifics.
“Dandan, is your organization any good?”
A curious voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts.
Shao Dandan turned toward the sound.
After the blood-red ropes binding her had melted back into her body, Ji Xiaoxia’s condition had improved significantly. Apart from some mental exhaustion, she no longer showed signs of transformation.
Now, faced with Ji Xiaoxia’s probing expression, Shao Dandan sighed lightly.
She knew what the other young woman was worried about.
After all, she had once been worried about the same thing.
With a half-joking tone, Shao Dandan said, “Don’t worry about it. I don’t need to tell you; they’ll probably approach you sooner or later. And no, they’re not going to cut you up for research or anything~”
The Safety Bureau was like a sponge nowadays.
Or rather, humanity as a whole had become one.
In the face of crisis, they were desperately in need of Special Ability Users.
