Chapter 956: Chapter 774: If I Could Do It Over
The night deepened to midnight.
After finishing some work on his laptop at home, Xu Shuo checked the time—it was getting late. After sending a goodnight message to Xu Xi, he planned to head to bed.
But just then, his phone began to ring.
The caller—
turned out to be Pei Hong.
“Hello?”
Listening to the voice on the other end, Xu Shuo’s gaze flickered slightly. After a brief acknowledgment, he hung up.
Quickly changing out of his pajamas, he was about to leave when his phone rang again.
This time, it was Captain Zheng from the Safety Bureau.
“Hello, what’s the matter?”
“…Heiyu District?”
“I’m afraid I can’t head there right now. I need to go to Dongshan District first.”
“Why not have Luo Kai handle it instead?”
“…Then have him turn back.”
“I must visit that place. Apologies.”
Hanging up, Xu Shuo frowned slightly as he stared at the call interface.
Earlier today, before Themis departed, it specifically worked on eliminating hidden Abyss spots across the world.
But now, barely a single night had passed—how could there suddenly be so many Abyssal invasions in such a short span of time?
What, did Themis accidentally reverse the elimination process?
…
…
Dongshan District.
Shengcheng Garden.
Pei Sheng was trembling as he sat inside the private swimming pool area of Unit 101.
A pristine white halo encased his body.
The halo shielded him from the lurking darkness outside, preventing it from harming him. Yet, the white light also illuminated the thing outside, making it appear even more horrifying. The eerie whiteness left Pei Sheng shivering uncontrollably.
That thing didn’t move, merely hunching over with its body twisted, staring at him with a pair of pitch-black, hollow eyes.
Its body was completely hairless and, on a closer look, it resembled some grotesque breed of hairless cat. Its arms extended all the way down to its feet, its exposed claws scraping the ground. Like a grotesque ape, it crouched there, its body mangled into a dreadful posture.
Oozing black, viscous dark matter flowed down its body, dripping continuously as though it would never stop.
The light from the halo reflected on its ghastly pale figure, making its featureless, eyeless face look even more horrifying.
And yet, it simply stared intently at Pei Sheng.
Pei Sheng shivered and sneaked a glance at it.
Moments ago, when he had used his phone to take a picture near the door—
the thing had abruptly lunged toward the camera.
The sight sent shivers down Pei Sheng’s scalp, making him throw his phone away on the spot. In the very next instant, the creature’s claws lashed toward him.
Pei Sheng screamed and spun around, trying to flee.
But when he turned, he shockingly realized he was inside the swimming pool area and not at the doorway as he had assumed!
Stunned, Pei Sheng naturally collided with the doorframe.
And at that very moment, the Jade Pendant he wore began emanating a miraculous glow, enveloping his entire body. The creature that had tried to lunge at him was immediately rebuffed.
After that…
it led to the current standoff.
The creature stood mere paces away, glaring menacingly at him from outside the protective halo.
Pei Sheng yanked at the doorknob with all his might, but it refused to budge. Not daring to venture into the darkness surrounding the pool, he huddled by the doorway, shaking endlessly in fear.
The entire swimming pool area was pitch dark.
No light seeped through the slatted blinds on the ceiling.
Thanks to the glow emitted by his protective halo, Pei Sheng could barely make out the faint ripples on the water’s surface several meters away.
“Splash…”
“Splash…”
The sound echoed once every thirty seconds or so.
He had no idea what was causing it.
Before long, however—
something began crawling toward him from the poolside, its ghastly pale body coated in tar-like black fluid. It stopped several paces away and, like the first creature, resumed staring intently at him.
Within just a few minutes—
the space around him had become infested with an army of those grotesque, hairless cat-like creatures.
Dozens of pairs of pitch-black, hollow eyes fixated on him in eerie unison. The pool area was deathly silent, devoid of any semblance of vitality, leaving only an icy chill in the air.
“Whimper… sob…”
Finally, Pei Sheng broke down, crying in sheer terror.
He looked helplessly at the creatures surrounding him. “Brothers, if you have any grievances, just tell me, and I’ll do everything I can to fulfill your wishes! There’s no need for this, right?”
The creatures did not respond in the slightest. They just continued watching him, as though waiting for something.
Of course, Pei Sheng knew exactly what they were waiting for.
For the protective item he wore to lose its effect.
He hastily clutched the Jade Pendant dangling from his neck, afraid to remove it for fear of accidentally dropping it.
If that happened, it would truly be a scene that these monsters would relish.
Yet, as he stared at the Jade Pendant—
Pei Sheng froze, as though something had come to mind.
He groped through his pockets but found nothing beyond his keys. Wearing only a work shirt, he realized with despair that no other treasures were on his person.
In that moment… Pei Sheng’s gaze drifted toward the lounge chair a few meters away.
When he had entered earlier—
he had been taking off his coat as he walked.
The coat, casually flung onto that very lounge chair, was left behind when he turned back in anger upon noticing the pool water’s black hue. He had stormed out, completely forgetting about it.
And, of course, as luck would have it—
Pei Sheng, disliking the Northeast Red-Flowered Brocade Pouch his elder brother had prepared for him, typically stashed it in the inner pocket of his coat. That way, even while walking around, it wouldn’t dangle visibly from his belt loop.
But now—
his vital protective item had apparently been carelessly discarded by his own hand.
Pei Sheng was instantly overcome with regret as tears welled up in his eyes.
He glanced at the menacing creatures standing just a few paces away. Clutching his Jade Pendant tightly, he pressed his back against the wall and cautiously shuffled a step to the side.
At the same time—
the creatures turned their heads ever so slightly, following his every move.
