Chapter 940: Chapter 940: Drunkenly Collapsed Among Them Chapter 940: Chapter 940: Drunkenly Collapsed Among Them Luo Ziling stepped back two paces, took out his phone, and switched it to video mode.

He then instructed the two to decide who would start first using rock-paper-scissors.

Following Luo Ziling’s instructions, the result was Luo Yuqing winning with scissors over Yang Qingyin’s paper, taking the lead.

“The plum and snow compete in spring but refuse to yield, the poet struggles to evaluate through his letters. The plum must cede to the snow’s three-part whiteness, yet the snow loses to the plum’s unique fragrance.” Luo Yuqing recited Lu Meipo’s famous “Xuemei” from the Song Dynasty.

“Plum without snow lacks vibrancy, snow without poetry bores the common. As evening falls and poetry ensues, snow comes again; together with plum, they make perfect spring.” Yang Qingyin recited another poem by Lu Meipo from the Song Dynasty, also named “Xuemei”.

The “Xuemei” recited by Luo Yuqing was more famous, whereas the one Yang Qingyin had just read was slightly less so. But Luo Ziling knew Yang Qingyin purposely chose Lu Meipo’s poem to demonstrate her strength to Luo Yuqing.

“A few branches of plum blossom in the corner bloom alone against the cold. From afar, they’re known not to be snow, for they bring a hidden fragrance.” Luo Yuqing recited Wang Anshi’s famous “Plum Blossom”.

Yang Qingyin pondered briefly, then recited another poem by Wang Anshi, “Looking strange, the plum blossom refuses to bloom, as if waiting on purpose for spring to arrive. A jade face emerges before the lamp, fragrant; enhanced beauty returns after the snow. Stirring the clear poetry to spontaneous creation, drenched sleeves carry the fun of passing wine. Those who see only dust know not of this, only planting peach and apricot trees for their beauty.”

Luo Yuqing, having never come across this poem, curiously asked, “Who wrote this poem?”

“Wang Anshi’s ‘Ode to the Plum Blossom,'” Luo Ziling answered on behalf of Yang Qingyin.

Upon hearing this, Luo Yuqing hesitated for a moment, also realizing what Yang Qingyin implied by her actions, feeling somewhat unconvinced.

“Five seconds, that’s the limit. How about that? No prolonged thinking!” Yang Qingyin proposed a challenge.

“Alright,” Luo Yuqing readily agreed and then immediately recited another poem, “Hearing of plum blossoms breaking the morning wind, snow blankets all four mountains. Where could one transform into a billion selves? A single tree of plum blossoms is Lu Fangweng.”

This famous piece was written by Lu You, Lu Fangweng, at the age of seventy-eight while living in seclusion in his hometown, Shanyin. Through the praise of plums, he expressed his loneliness and noble feelings, interestingly incorporating his own name into the poem.

Luo Ziling knew Yang Qingyin would surely recite a poem by Lu You in response to Luo Yuqing.

However, retrieving a poem by the same author from his memory within five seconds, especially that contains two specific keywords, was clearly challenging.

Even though Luo Ziling was well-read in poetry, he couldn’t react immediately.

He thought of the famous “Song of the Plum Blossom by the Divination Scholar on the Broken Bridge”: Beside the outpost’s broken bridge, alone opens the plum, masterless. It’s already dusk, the solitude deepens, further dampened by wind and rain. Not intending to vie for spring, it simply lets other flowers envy. Turned to mud and crushed into dust, its fragrance remains as before.

Although this verse was about plums, it lacked the words “plum” and “snow”, obviously not fitting the rules just set.

“Before Qingyang Palace on Jinjiang Road, intoxicated by plum blossoms for a decade. Who knew that today, in quest of fragrance, I’d find a boat under Shanyin’s snowy night?” Yang Qingyin promptly recited another poem by Lu You, also titled “Plum Blossom”.

Luo Ziling had seen this poem but hadn’t memorized it completely. Hearing Yang Qingyin recite it without hesitation slightly surprised him.

Luo Yuqing had read this poem, but Lu You’s poem was not widely known. The fact that Yang Qingyin could recite it without thinking showed her vast knowledge of poetry.

Luo Yuqing thought for a moment, then recited another poem by Lu You about plum blossoms and snow, “Long ago I made an agreement with the plum flowers, and to this day, my white hair hasn’t forgotten the feeling. Not worried about the lack of sons to mock me, only regret the sorrow of longing that emaciates life. What fate have I ever blamed in the empty valley, the romance is just right for overthrowing the city. Growing ice and piling snow, the passers-by are few, try asking a detained swan to deliver the sound.”

After reciting the poem, she looked at Yang Qingyin a bit smugly, curious to see if Yang Qingyin would continue to recite Lu You’s work.

Yang Qingyin still blurted out effortlessly, “The lodge viewed over half-melted snow; plum blossoms and I both detached. As always, Qingyang Palace lies unchanged, intestines severed by the spring wind on the endless bridge!”

The verses she recited were still those of Lu You, verses Luo Ziling couldn’t recall, and Luo Yuqing was the same.

Seeing how swiftly Yang Qingyin responded, Luo Yuqing was greatly surprised and after thinking for a moment, recited another poem by Lu You, “If the headwaters of the Yao River harbor springtime stinginess, the plum blossoms alone dazzle, concerning the empty mountains. Encountering them is not like the peers of peaches and plums; attaining the Dao, they maintain their icy, snowy faces. Ascending, one ought to make the world cherish them; picked for company in Lu Fangweng’s leisure. Among men, who could compare in strategies–a thousand years among the peers of Yi and Qi.”

Luo Yuqing’s response was also swift, and her verses were still grand works of Lu You, not only did Luo Ziling gape in astonishment, but Yang Qingyin was also taken aback.

After seriously thinking for a few seconds, she then recited another poem she thought of, “Pluck drunken, withered plums, one or two branches–not minding peaches and plums meeting their time. Ever since the ice and snow hardened the ground, who has the strength to turn spring back?”

Luo Yuqing gave Yang Qingyin a thumbs up; she couldn’t remember any more of Lu You’s poems that contained the words “snow” and “plum,” and had to switch to someone else.

“Spring incomplete upon arrival, sight of it severs the gut with sorrow. Fallen plums below the steps chaotic as snow, brushing off a body still covered. Goose messages bear no foundation, the road long, dreams of return hard to fulfill. Parting hate just like spring grass, grows more as you step farther away.” Luo Yuqing recited a grand work of Li Yu.

After thinking for a while, Yang Qingyin finally shook her head in embarrassment, “Li Yu doesn’t have another verse with both snow and plums, so I just picked someone else’s work. ‘Snow indicates the arrival of spring letters, cold plums adorn the jade branches slickly. Fragrant face half-opened, seductively; by the court, a jade person emerges fresh from the wash. Nature might have intended this bias, thus instructs the bright moon to be exquisitely placed. We share the golden goblet of green ants, do not shun drunkenness, this flower does not compare with the mass.’ Words by Li Yian!”

“Sunset melts the gold, evening clouds close like a bi-disk, where is the person? Dyeing the willows with dense smoke, scornful notes from a plum flute… Twisted golden snow willows, crowds still rival the state of Chu.” Luo Yuqing retaliated in the same fashion, also reciting a lyric by Li Qingzhao.

Yang Qingyin smiled gently, unconcerned, then recited another poem, “As spring nears, though the cold turns, plum blossoms relax yet snow still drifts. Following the wind they still fall, in sunlight not all melt. Leaves open following the footprints, more flowers aid the laden branches. Today differs gradually from yesterday, towards evening decisively better than the morning.”

Upon hearing this poem recited by Yang Qingyin, Luo Ziling and Luo Yuqing both paused, having never read this poem before.

“A poet from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Yin Keng, the poem Xuemei,” Yang Qingyin immediately explained and gestured to Luo Yuqing.

Luo Yuqing, who initially wanted to mimic Yang Qingyin by reciting from the same poet, could only dejectedly give up.

“Snow like plum blossoms, plum blossoms like snow. Whether alike or not, both are marvelously unique. Who knows this vexing flavor? Please ask the moon of the southern balcony…”

“A catalog of the Rabbit Garden, startled most by plums. Bearing frost, they bloom along the road, anticipating cold snow to open… A poet from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, He Xun, intentionally clarified!” Yang Qingyin made it a point to explain.

“The charm of little plums is most enchanting. Bloom where the snow just melted…”

“Plum blossoms fall from crowded branches, thousands of pieces, still affectionate, like snow they turn with the wind…”

“A single tree of cold plums, white jade branches, standout beside the forest village by the creek. Not knowing flowers by the water bloom first, suspecting they emerged during spring, snow not yet melted.”

Watching two beautiful women slightly deep in thought, then reciting one after another verses containing the words “plum” and “snow” for quite a while without conceding, Luo Ziling was utterly dumbfounded. In this scene, this feeling, Luo Ziling felt somewhat intoxicated.

Who else could see two stunning women standing in front of snow and plum blossoms, competing in the manner of the “Feihua Order”?

He was extremely fortunate; the scene of these two women competing in beauty before him today, he would remember for a lifetime.

He too thought of a verse to describe these two women: in their bellies, they carried poetry and books, their own elegance emerging.
