Chapter 313: Chapter 305 Artificial Respiration? Let me do it!
The narrow trail was only a few dozen centimeters wide, with no railing on the side near the coast.
No need to turn one’s head; the peripheral vision could catch the glittering waters of the lake and the ever-present moon that seemed to linger in sight.
"What’s that smell?"
Liu Zheng took a sniff through his nostrils.
An odd fishy smell wafted over from the surroundings, bearing a likeness to the putrid scent of vegetation similar to his blood, yet it also carried other odors, as if insects and eyeballs had been mashed together and left to ferment.
He looked down at his feet, where many patches of blue-green moss shone with a phosphorescent glow covered the narrow ground.
This moss was exceptionally thick and robust, with structures resembling flower buds growing on their tips.
And from these "flower buds" they stepped on, the same blue-green phosphorescent liquid oozed out.
Clearly, they were the source of the fishy smell.
"What are these?"
Liu Zheng pointed at the moss and asked.
"I don’t know, the Church provided me with very little information about Carcarens Academy."
Andrina admitted frankly.
"Heh."
He curled his lips.
Amelia really wasn’t afraid of his outbursts, it appeared. He’d have to get another compensation from her to soothe his resentment when he got back.
"Try to avoid those buds as much as possible, and hold your breath as much as you can."
Liu Zheng ordered.
Although he didn’t know what effects the moss might have, it was definitely wise to take precautions.
"Yes."
The group obeyed his command, moving forward cautiously.
But the trail was only so wide, and it was impossible not to breathe at all, so inevitably they still inhaled some of the moss’s fishy scent.
After walking for about fifteen minutes, the group finally reached the end of the trail.
And beyond the trail lay the valley where Carcarens Academy was located.
Just as Liu Zheng was about to step off the trail, someone suddenly grabbed him.
He turned around abruptly, finding Xia Kai holding onto him.
"What are you doing?"
He asked.
"Boss, what are you doing?"
Xia Kai looked even more puzzled than he did.
"Of course, I’m heading to Carcarens Academy. What, you want to stay here and enjoy the lake scenery?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"What do you mean enjoy the lake scenery? You were about to jump into the water suddenly, scared the hell out of me. I know you’re capable, boss, but if there’s a road, there’s no need to swim across, right?"
Xia Kai retorted.
"Huh?"
He looked in front of himself; it was clearly a flatland.
"So what do you see in front of me?"
He questioned.
"A lake. But this lake is really huge, like the sea. Dongting Lake isn’t even this big, right?"
Xia Kai exclaimed.
"What about all of you?"
Liu Zheng asked the others.
"We also see the lake."
The three Gunpowder Workshop Hunters replied.
"I see flatland."
Andrina said.
"Well, it turns out that the moss’s scent is a hallucinogen."
He instantly understood what had happened.
"But how come you’re not affected?"
Liu Zheng asked Andrina.
He wasn’t surprised he wasn’t affected; it might be his high physical constitution and Spiritual Attribute, or perhaps the effect of the Black Mountain Goat Cub Bloodline.
But Andrina was just an ordinary person, if anything, only slightly stronger than the Gunpowder Workshop Hunters.
"I don’t know, perhaps it’s the Holy Blood that’s protecting me."
Andrina speculated.
"Yes, that’s possible."
He agreed with her assessment.
It’s less about protection and more like fighting poison with poison.
"Blood Healing" itself affects the mind, and being a close confidant of the Grand Patriarch, Andrina’s "Blood Healing" would certainly be of the highest quality; she might even have developed a resistance to it.
"Then you’re responsible for keeping an eye on these four, subdue them if they show any unusual behavior, and try not to kill them."
Liu Zheng instructed.
"Yes."
Andrina agreed readily.
She had experience in dealing with such situations; after all, the Tommer Dungeon held many things that could induce hallucinations.
"Boss, why are you just moving your lips without making a sound? I don’t understand lip-reading."
Xia Kai’s tone was a bit aggrieved; he felt like he had been isolated.
"...You might as well go straight to sleep, kid."
Liu Zheng extended two tendrils, one smacking the back of Xia Kai’s head and the other snatching the boning knife from his hand.
"Thud!"
A muffled sound echoed as Xia Kai’s eyes rolled back and he fainted, a large bump swelling on the back of his head.
"The force was just right, dazed but no brain damage."
Liu Zheng was quite satisfied with his handiwork.
"You, carry him."
He said to Andrina.
"Ah? Okay, fine."
Andrina reluctantly hoisted Xia Kai onto her back.
Liu Zheng knew she was unwilling, but there was nothing he could do about it.
He definitely couldn’t carry Xia Kai, as he was the main force in combat.
And it was impractical to expect the three Gunpowder Workshop Hunters to carry him, as they were caught in the hallucination themselves.
The only one left unaffected was Andrina, and Xia Kai posed no threat to her either.
"Let’s go."
Liu Zheng took a step forward, leaving the walkway.
Carrying Xia Kai, Andrina also stepped off the walkway, following him.
The three Gunpowder Workshop Hunters exchanged glances, and the Machine Gun Hunter Yula bit her lip, taking a step forward.
Though it was flat ground, she stumbled as if stepping into an abyss, falling flat on her face.
"Yula’s fallen into the lake!"
The other two Gunpowder Workshop Hunters called out in alarm.
"No, the person’s lying right there; can’t you see?"
Liu Zheng pointed at the Machine Gun Hunter on the ground.
"No, we only see a lake."
The two Gunpowder Workshop Hunters shook their heads.
"Good grief."
He extended a tendril and lifted the Machine Gun Hunter up high.
"Now what?"
"Ah, Yula’s been pulled up, all drenched."
"Heavens, could he have drowned? Should we perform CPR on him?"
"CPR? I’ll do it!"
The young Gunpowder Workshop Hunter said excitedly.
"No, if Yula wakes up and knows you did the CPR, he’d surely kill you. Never mind, I’ll do it."
The older Gunpowder Workshop Hunter said with a resigned look.
"...Not even eating a pound of poisonous mushrooms would have this effect. Forget it, all of you go to sleep."
Liu Zheng swung his tendrils, knocking out the three Gunpowder Workshop Hunters as well.
"Mr. Delivery Man, I can’t carry this many."
Andrina looked at him with a reproachful gaze.
"I know, I never intended for you to carry them."
Liu Zheng searched through the belongings of the three Gunpowder Workshop Hunters and, sure enough, found a coil of rope.
"Alright, this will do."
He tied the three hunters together and began dragging them forward.
Andrina opened her mouth as if to speak about the hunters’ dignity and honor, but in the end, she said nothing and followed him with her head down.
Continuing forward, they came upon an area that seemed to be a settlement.
Many wooden and stone houses were arranged around a central circular plaza, radiating outward.
They looked long uninhabited but still maintained basic integrity.
"What is this place?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"This is the former encampment of the Academy Hunters."
Andrina said.
The hunters used to be nothing more than mercenaries for Carcarens Academy; Master Albert naturally wouldn’t let them stay inside the academy.
"Quite a few people, huh."
Liu Zheng remarked, scanning the area.
Even if only two or three people lived in each house, there had to be at least three or four hundred people here.
"Exploring the Tommer Ruins is a very dangerous endeavor."
Andrina stated diplomatically.
"Indeed, just like tomb raiders often run into ’zongzi’ and ’ghost blowing out the light,’ right?"
Liu Zheng quipped.
"Is that a specialty from your hometown, Mr. Delivery Man?"
Andrina asked curiously.
"Indeed it is..."
He was just about to enlighten the country bumpkin Yate about the traditional tomb-robbing culture when he suddenly heard a dense buzzing sound.
