Chapter 269: Chapter 265 Boss Save My Dog’s Life
"Damn it, how did it suddenly stop working? It was fine just a moment ago."
Xia Kai sprinted wildly while cursing loudly.
White streams of air sprayed from the sneakers he was wearing, clearly another kind of item.
"Crack!"
Suddenly, he heard a noise from behind and immediately ducked his head without hesitation.
"Bang!"
A loud gunshot sounded, and a silver bullet passed through where Xia Kai’s head had just been, hitting a tombstone ahead.
The stone tombstone split open explosively, missing a corner.
"Shit!"
Xia Kai couldn’t help but curse softly.
With that kind of power, if it hit him, to put it nicely, wouldn’t it smash him to pieces?
If the flintlock guns in the hands of Napoleon’s Firearms Soldiers had this power, they wouldn’t just have conquered Europe—all of Antarctica would be theirs.
"Hey, system, are you sure you didn’t get it wrong? Is a newbie like me really supposed to take on this level of instance? If you want me dead, just wipe me out directly, no need to make it so complicated."
Xia Kai talked trash but it didn’t delay his escaping.
Even in the complex terrain of Yadan Cemetery, where the locals found challenging, he moved as if on flat ground.
This was thanks to the fierce customs of his hometown. Although he was a quiz-taker who hadn’t learned to fight, his skill at escaping had still been leveled up.
"Crack!"
Another noise sounded.
This time, Xia Kai didn’t bet on the adversary aiming for his head; instead, he directly pulled out an empty magazine.
"Name: Thirsty Empty Magazine (Disposable)"
"Type: Item"
"Quality: Excellent"
"Effect: When used, it can attract bullets from the attacking player into the magazine."
"Note: Hurry up and stuff your .50 bullet into my .38 slot."
"Can be taken out of the instance: Yes"
Xia Kai took out the magazine but didn’t hold it in his hand; instead, he threw it into the air.
The silver bullet flew out of the chamber and, like a straight man who had been imprisoned for years, flew towards the magazine.
The large bullet head inserted into the magazine’s entrance and the thin metal magazine immediately deformed and exploded.
In a daze, Xia Kai seemed to hear a satisfied moan.
He had used another item, and his heart was bleeding.
These were all things he had put great effort into obtaining in the last instance.
The reason Xia Kai used it so decisively, apart from his personality, was also because of a tip from a veteran who had cleared three instances in the last instance.
"The process of acquiring these items might be life-threatening, but if you are reluctant to use them, it’s a certain death."
The veteran had said while eating a lavish meal provided by Xia Kai.
But even if Xia Kai was willing to use the items, running away like this was not a solution.
His items would eventually run out, and even if he successfully made it through this instance, what about the next?
He didn’t think he would receive a high rating in this instance, and it was unlikely that the difficulty of the next instance would decrease.
Just as Xia Kai was considering whether to leave the cemetery directly or try to take down Father John with the items he had, he suddenly heard footsteps nearby.
He turned to look and then shouted in his mind, "Fuck."
He saw a humanoid monster with four tentacles and a seaweed-like head approaching. It was wearing a yellow vest over a blue uniform and draped in a bright yellow cloak, looking indescribably strange.
And next to the monster were two humans, a middle-aged man looking weary and a little girl who resembled a doll.
What was this, a monster with its portable food supply?
"It’s all over now, wolves ahead and tigers behind."
Xia Kai lamented madly in his mind.
Just as he was debating letting Father John chop him to death with an axe, going to offer himself as reserve food to the Tentacle Monster, or simply smashing into a tombstone to commit suicide, the system alert abruptly sounded.
"Other player detected, calculating current situation."
"Calculation complete, player mode changed to normal mode, no rewards or penalties for player kills."
"Player?"
Xia Kai’s eyes widened as he spotted the tentacle monster looking back at him.
"Boss, save my life!"
He yelled loudly and lunged at the tentacle monster.
"Huh?"
Liu Zheng had also heard the system notification and was utterly baffled.
Wasn’t his instance supposed to be single-player? How had he come across another player?
Thinking this, he asked aloud.
However, the system did not provide an explanation.
But Liu Zheng had somewhat figured it out.
The instance’s population probably referred to the number of people in his instance. Since he had left Metropolis, he technically left his original instance region, and the chubby boy running towards him must be a player from the Yate instance region.
"Stop!"
He pulled out a hunter’s flintlock gun from his system space and aimed it at the chubby boy as he commanded.
One should always be wary. Although Liu Zheng didn’t feel threatened by the man, he couldn’t just let him get too close.
"Boss, I mean no harm. I am just being chased by a monster and need your help," Xia Kai pleaded as he immediately stopped and raised his hands pitifully.
"Being chased?"
Liu Zheng turned his gaze behind him.
Not only had Xia Kai stopped, but the Hunter pursuing him had as well.
The bloodstained ax trembled slightly, unclear if out of fear or excitement.
"Dad!"
Flora suddenly cried out excitedly.
"Found you indeed."
Liu Zheng was somewhat surprised.
Hearing his daughter’s voice, Father John lifted his head.
The face, previously hidden under a round hat, was now fully exposed under the moonlight.
Hair as wild as weeds covered half of his face, steam billowed from his wide-open mouth, but it couldn’t hide his sharp canine teeth.
"Flora?"
Father John looked toward his daughter’s direction in confusion, calling out hesitantly.
"It’s me, dad. Mom came out looking for you. Have you seen her?" Flora asked loudly.
"Flora, did you hear that?"
Father John didn’t answer his daughter’s question but asked in return.
"Hear what? Dad."
"They are singing, they are singing in my blood. Oh no, no no, they are the blood, blood is singing!"
Father John’s voice suddenly rose.
Then, his gaze fixed directly on Liu Zheng.
"I see what you are—a stranger like me. You don’t have the scent of blood, but you can’t fool me. You’re not right. Stay away from my daughter!"
Father John suddenly raised his rifle and without hesitation, pulled the trigger.
Liu Zheng swung the Slaughter Knife, blocking it in front of him.
Sparks flew, filling the night with the grating sound of metal colliding.
The mercury bullet was deflected by the Slaughter Knife, flying into the dry tree beside them.
"Looks like your dad needs a good beating to snap out of it," he shrugged and said.
"Can you not kill my dad?"
Flora had tears in her eyes, yet she didn’t attempt to pull Liu Zheng back.
"It all depends on whether he seeks death or not. You, stay right where you are and don’t move. Move a finger, and I’ll blow your head off," Liu Zheng lifted a tentacle, pointing at Xia Kai, then proceeded towards Father John carrying the Slaughter Knife.
