Chapter 266: Chapter 262: The Church’s Chief Hunter and the Grand Patriarch
The man bearing the unsheathed great sword entered the hall, his gaze fixed on the Church’s main altar in front of him.
Each tier of the main altar was symmetrically lined with statues clad in hooded robes, all with hands raised as if pleading for something.
Only the statue at the highest tier was different.
It was a headless figure, holding a bottle and pouring some kind of liquid downwards.
Where the bottle pointed, at the very center of the altar’s lowest tier, lay a human skull on a table.
Kneeling before the skull was a person in a white hooded robe, with hands clasped as if in prayer.
Strands of silver hair fell from the hood, resting on slender, pale fingers.
"Great Archbishop Amelia."
The man called out.
"Ah, Master Beethoven."
The woman responded softly, as if awakening from a dream.
"Are you well?"
The Chief Hunter asked with concern.
"I am well, Master. The wisdom of Grand Patriarch Dickens has always protected me,"
Amelia said calmly.
"That’s good."
Beethoven nodded, not probing further.
He was the Church’s sharpest sword, and a sword needs only to slay enemies, not to think too much.
The great Archbishop Amelia was the brain of the Blood Healing Church, and he trusted in her wisdom.
"How are things outside?"
Amelia inquired.
"Everything is under control. The spread of the Beastification Disease is more severe this time, but we have more manpower and resources than before,"
Beethoven replied.
After forty years, he still looked much like a middle-aged man, just with more wrinkles and white hair.
As the Church’s Chief Hunter, he naturally received the highest quality of Blood Healing, and the "Blood Quality" he obtained from his hunts was naturally the most abundant as well.
"Good, the Church and I both have faith in you, Master Beethoven. With you and your knights around, humanity will ultimately triumph over the beasts,"
Amelia said gently.
"It is my duty, and my honor,"
Beethoven replied, hand to his chest.
Amelia was about to say something when footsteps suddenly came from outside.
A Church Hunter bearing a great sword similar to Beethoven’s approached the door but did not enter, simply looking at Beethoven’s back.
"What is it?"
Beethoven turned and asked.
"A mobile unit reports that they have encountered a strange outsider,"
the Church Hunter responded, bowing his head.
"A strange outsider? Let’s go outside to talk. Do not disturb the great Archbishop’s meditation,"
Beethoven said, glancing at Amelia.
"It’s all right, Master Beethoven. Just speak here. I would like to hear some news from outside too,"
Amelia said gently, shaking her head.
"Yes, Great Archbishop Amelia. Continue,"
Beethoven motioned to the Church Hunter with a nod.
"There’s an oddly dressed outsider wandering around the city with a local middle-aged man and a little girl as guides,"
the Church Hunter reported.
"A middle-aged man and a little girl? Have their identities been confirmed?"
Beethoven frowned.
"We have yet to confirm the middle-aged man’s identity, but the girl is likely Father John’s daughter,"
the Church Hunter replied.
"Father John."
Beethoven paused.
He knew this young priest, a man of decent strength and high moral character, an excellent Hunter.
He also tried to recruit the other party under his command, but unfortunately, due to differing beliefs, he was not successful.
"Were they threatened by that foreigner?"
Beethoven asked again.
"It doesn’t seem so. Father John’s daughter even took the initiative to hold on to the corner of the foreigner’s clothes, appearing to be quite dependent on him."
The Church Hunter said.
"Then what are they doing in the city? Just wandering around?"
Beethoven spoke with some confusion.
"Not sure, they use persuasion or force to open the doors of residents’ homes, but when they come out, they don’t carry any extra supplies."
"According to the hunters’ recognition, the places they entered were basically shops or food stores."
The Church Hunter looked even more puzzled than him.
"Did they harm the residents?"
A flash of anger crossed Beethoven’s face, and the Great Sword on his back seemed to glow slightly in response to his rage.
He revered the ancient knightly heroes and demanded the same knightly spirit from himself and his subordinates, detesting those who harmed civilians.
"No, the hunters didn’t hear any screams nor did they smell the scent of blood."
The Church Hunter shook his head.
"...So they forcibly entered the residents’ homes just to satisfy their strange whims?"
Beethoven said somewhat speechlessly.
"Not exactly, according to the hunters’ subsequent questioning, the residents did indeed sell them supplies, it’s just not clear how they managed to hide them."
"Is that so? Did they notice our men?"
Beethoven asked.
"They seem to have noticed, the foreigner waved at the place where the hunters were hiding, but besides that, he did not make any other moves."
The Church Hunter replied.
"Is that a provocation? Interesting."
A hint of amusement glinted in Beethoven’s weathered eyes.
After fighting Beasts for so many years, even with his high and steadfast will, he couldn’t help but become somewhat numb.
This strange foreigner who suddenly appeared had indeed aroused his curiosity.
"Did they encounter any Beasts?"
Great Archbishop Amelia, who had remained silent until now, suddenly spoke up.
The Church Hunter did not immediately answer but first looked at Beethoven.
The Church’s hunters also belonged to various factions, and this hunter was a "Holy Sword" Hunter directly under Beethoven.
As for Amelia, the highest authority in the Church, she naturally had her own direct combat forces.
Facing his subordinate’s question, Beethoven discretely nodded in assent.
"They encountered a Beast, esteemed Great Archbishop Amelia,"
The "Holy Sword" Hunter then replied.
"How did they fare?"
Amelia asked softly.
"Very strong, the foreigner could subdue a canine Beast with his bare hands, and the hunters could barely see his sword-swinging actions."
The "Holy Sword" Hunter replied after a moment of silence.
"What?!"
Beethoven was visibly shocked, and Amelia’s body also trembled slightly.
The rapid response unit was trained by Beethoven himself, responsible for patrolling all of Yate, each one an experienced and formidable hunter.
If even they couldn’t clearly see the foreigner’s sword-swinging actions, just how fast was this outsider?
"Did he, by any chance..."
"No, he doesn’t have the scent of blood on him and is only interested in severely Beastified Beasts. He will ignore those lightly Beastified residents as long as they do not attack him first."
The "Holy Sword" Hunter knew what Beethoven was about to ask.
"A foreigner who has not undergone ’Blood Healing’ yet can subdue a canine Beast with his bare hands?"
A sharp light burst from Beethoven’s eyes.
"Send someone to make contact with him, Master Beethoven. If he’s willing, invite him to the Church."
He was just about to say something when Amelia spoke up before him.
