Chapter 258 - 254: Communicating with You in the Metropolis Way
Chapter 258: Chapter 254: Communicating with You in the Metropolis Way
Flora gripped her small basket tightly, staring intently at the street corner.
She both hoped and feared that her father would be the one to come.
Because she didn’t know in what manner he would appear before her.
Finally, the Hunter emerged from behind the wall.
Underneath his coat, he wore a white shirt and a multi-buttoned vest with a notched collar, covered by a heavyweight overcoat, with similarly heavy trousers and a pair of leather boots.
The overcoat had a large number of extra sewn pockets and straps, presumably for carrying weapons and supplies.
Paired with the Hunter’s tall and slender figure, he looked very capable.
What was rather distinct was his hat, which was triangular in shape.
The brim curved into a smooth U-shape at the front, and the back was intentionally cut into several triangular incisions, resembling the wings of a bird.
Underneath the brim was a pale and somber face, with a prominent nose marred by an old scar that stretched from the nostril to the right corner of the mouth.
"Huh~"
Flora let out a breath, looking both disappointed and relieved.
"On the Pale Night, why are you still wandering outside?"
The Hunter, holding a torch, walked over and asked, his voice as heavy as his footsteps.
"Mr. Liu Zheng, may I do the negotiating?"
Anke asked with a tone seeking approval.
Compared to the residents hiding in their homes, these Hunters confronting the Beast were on edge and might not accommodate the slightly off-kilter way of speaking from this foreigner.
"Yes."
Liu Zheng nodded in agreement.
"I’m Anke, the owner of Anke Tavern, and they are my family. Our door was smashed by the Beast, so we wanted to seek refuge elsewhere."
Anke stepped forward a bit and then answered the Hunter’s question.
"Where to?"
The Hunter continued to inquire.
"Suffering Church."
Anke replied.
"Why not go to the Blood Healing Church?"
"Because I think the Blood Healing Church will be crowded with people, and we might not get well situated if we went there. There should be fewer people heading to the Suffering Church, and even if it costs a little more, at least they would likely be very welcoming there."
Anke spoke frankly.
His reasoning was clear and well-founded, which softened the Hunter’s stern expression somewhat.
"What about the Beast that broke your door?"
The Hunter asked again.
"We hunted it down."
"Who?"
The Hunter’s gaze shifted away from Anke, circled everyone’s faces, and finally settled on Liu Zheng’s face.
"Was it you?"
He lifted the torch as if to illuminate Liu Zheng’s face.
"It was me."
Liu Zheng admitted plainly.
"You’re also a foreigner, but not a Hunter. You killed the Beast, yet there’s no scent of blood on you."
The Hunter seemed puzzled.
"Who exactly are you?"
"A worker."
He shrugged and replied.
The Hunter paid no mind to his flippant comment, his bloodshot eyes scanning Liu Zheng back and forth.
Despite nothing unusual being found aside from the peculiar outfit, the Hunter still felt an innate sense of unnaturalness about the man before him.
"You’re not right."
The Hunter stated.
"Oh? What’s not right?"
Liu Zheng asked with interest.
Of course he wasn’t right, but he was more curious to see if the Hunter could pinpoint it.
If just any Hunter could see through his disguise, then the Metropolis wasn’t all that great after all.
"I don’t know, but something about you is just not right."
The Hunter shook his head, stubbornly saying,
"Then what do you plan to do?"
Liu Zheng calmly countered.
"I must take you back to the workshop; I can’t let a dangerous element like you roam around outside."
The Hunter replied.
"That’s not possible; he still has to escort us to the Suffering Church."
Anke said loudly.
"That has nothing to do with me."
The Hunter said coldly.
They were just Hunters, not protectors.
"It’s because of attitudes like yours that Old Yate turned into ruins, that so many innocent people died in that great fire!"
Anke was infuriated by the Hunter’s words, raising his boning knife with the tip pointed at the Hunter.
"You want to attack a Hunter, have you lost your mind?"
The Hunter’s gaze fixed on Anke, and then he sniffed.
"Indeed, I do smell the scent of blood on you."
He placed the torch into the wall, and then pulled out a strangely shaped weapon from behind him.
It was a large saw meat knife, which looked somewhat similar to Liu Zheng’s sawtoothed butcher knife.
But its handle was curled into an S-shape, and it was wrapped with many bandages.
Although it visibly lacked the quality of Liu Zheng’s Slaughter Knife, it carried a more ferocious aura.
"Come with me, or I will hunt you down."
The Hunter triggered the mechanism, and the previously folded saw meat knife instantly unfolded.
"Go with you, and then be slaughtered like pigs and dogs? Don’t think I don’t know what you do, you inhuman Executioners."
Anke, utterly angered by his arrogant attitude, no longer watched his words.
"You accuse me of madness, you should look in the mirror first. Look at the Blood Light in your eyes; what differentiates you from those Beasts?"
"The scent of blood, you will soon become a Beast. It’d be better if..."
The Hunter’s flintlock gun suddenly raised, then he pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
The loud gunshot echoed through the alley.
"Hunt sooner."
The Hunter’s chilling voice came out only after the bullet left the barrel.
The large-caliber bullet traveled the tens of meters in an instant, aimed at Anke’s head.
The primitive-looking flintlock gun, enhanced by mysterious craftsmanship, released power surpassing that of repeating rifles.
Anke’s eyes widened; under the enhancement of his blood, he could see the trajectory of the bullet, but his body was unable to dodge.
"Move! Move!"
He desperately commanded his body, but there was no response.
He was not a trained Hunter, and he had received Blood Healing very few times.
Just when Anke thought he was about to lose his life, a Slaughter Knife shielded his face.
"Clang!"
The sound of metal striking at high speed pained his eardrums, and finally, his body began to roll to the ground.
The bullet deformed and shattered from the impact, splattering droplets of silvery liquid.
That was mercury; the Hunters filled their bullets with it to increase their lethality against Beasts.
A spray of blood shot out, shining brilliantly in the firelight.
Liu Zheng looked at his tentacle with a new notch, and a red vein formed on his sawtoothed butcher knife.
This was the "Spirit of Self-Consumption," which enhanced the attack power at the cost of consuming the user’s flesh and blood and could not be switched off.
For ordinary people, they might kill themselves with the knife before even managing to kill the enemy.
But for Liu Zheng, such a loss was merely trivial.
"I originally thought that coming out to shop would be good for my body and mind, but I didn’t expect the customs outside the Metropolis to be so quaint."
He swung his Slaughter Knife, flinging the bullet lodged in it to the ground.
"Since that’s the case, I might as well communicate with you the Metropolis way."
Liu Zheng’s heels tapped, and he surged forward with explosive speed,
even faster than the bullet the Hunter had shot.
And as he reached the Hunter, the wound on his tentacle had already healed completely.
