Chapter 248: Chapter 245: Outside is the true purgatory
"Want to come down and touch?"
Liu Zheng smiled kindly.
Although the second floor was not lit, his perception was still clear enough to make out the other person’s appearance.
A cute little blond girl.
"Nina, come back."
Liu Zheng heard a very soft reprimand, and then the little girl was pulled into deeper darkness.
He shrugged his shoulders, thinking that this level of caution was quite reasonable in the face of a strong outsider.
"Salmon doesn’t like to be touched by strangers, meow."
The San Huamao lying on the side protested.
"Can’t help it, gotta build relationships, all for work. Who made Salmon so cute."
Liu Zheng took the opportunity to rub the cat’s head again.
The face on his back surfaced, glared at him angrily, then quickly hid again.
Away from Metropolis, his existence seemed to be subject to some sort of restriction.
"I kept you waiting."
Anke brought over two cups of beer, one large and one small.
A layer of powdery substance floated on the golden liquid.
Liu Zheng raised it to his nose and smelled, and a pungent pepper scent rushed into his nostrils.
He placed the small cup in front of San Huamao, then raised his own large cup and took a sip.
"Ah Qiu~"
The strong taste shot from Liu Zheng’s mouth straight into his nose, causing him to sneeze uncontrollably.
"Haha, this is ’Uncle Pepper,’ how does it feel?"
Seeing his reaction, Anke couldn’t help but laugh.
"Not bad, even more invigorating than menthol oil."
Liu Zheng nodded.
Naturally, Yate didn’t have menthol oil, but Anke automatically understood it to be some other kind of stimulating substance.
"Right, this one is for workers to drink for stimulation, can’t be considered good liquor. That’s why I was so surprised you came all the way here for supplies."
He said candidly.
"Good liquor is good liquor, and being special is a plus. Anyway, we’re just responsible for the purchasing. Whether it can be sold is not within our consideration."
Liu Zheng said nonchalantly.
"Well, you do have a point."
Anke nodded.
The casual manner of the other person in dealing with work made Anke relax a bit more; it was just too natural.
"Speaking of which, aren’t you afraid when you see those beasts?"
He asked again.
"What’s there to be afraid of? They’re just beasts. I have both guns and knives; they should be afraid of me."
Liu Zheng patted his waist as he spoke.
Only then did Anke notice that there was a boning knife and a fine pistol at the other’s waist.
At first, his expression tensed, but then it settled down.
With the power that the other had shown, he didn’t need weapons to subdue him.
"You do realize they’re not just beasts, right?"
Anke steadied himself and said.
"I’ve guessed as much. Didn’t you just say that head was someone you know?"
Liu Zheng replied.
"Seeing people turned into beasts, even if you’re not scared, aren’t you surprised?"
Anke said, staring at him.
"Boss, how long have you been here?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"Almost fifty years."
Anke thought about it and said.
"Have you been outside during these years?"
"No, I’ve never left Yate."
Anke shook his head.
"That’s good, if you haven’t been out, then don’t go out. The world outside is much more dangerous than Yate."
He sincerely said.
A world more dangerous than Beart...
Listening to the howls of the beasts resuming outside, Anke’s complexion turned pale.
The pallid night of Yate was already a hell on earth. What was a place more dangerous than Beart, a true hell?
"By the way boss, having been in Yate for so many years, you must be very familiar with the situation here, right?"
Liu Zheng inquired.
"The things on the streets I’m familiar with, but I don’t know much about anything else."
Anke said cautiously.
"Then could you please have a look at this procurement list and give me some pointers on where I should go?"
He took out a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Anke.
It wasn’t the list given to him by the White Feather Chicken, but one he had torn from Bai Langzi’s poetry drafts.
The items on it weren’t complete; they were just what Liu Zheng had selected.
After all, some of the stuff on the procurement list was a bit too horrifying for the average person.
"Let me see."
Anke took the list and began to read it under the dim light.
"A hundred bars of Iron Rod Bread, fifty pounds of smoked stinky rat jerky, thirty bottles of Ten-mile Fragrant Flower Juice..."
"Hold on, what kind of peculiar tastes does your restaurant’s procurement manager have, buying all these bizarre items?"
He grew more speechless as he read further down.
The items on the procurement list were indeed special products of Yate, but they were the more peculiar kinds within that category.
The Iron Rod Bread was so named because it was hard enough to use as a crowbar.
Smoked stinky rat jerky was only something the truly poor would buy to eat.
And the Ten-mile Fragrant Flower Juice was even more extreme.
Though the flower itself was quite beautiful, its juice tasted almost like saliva, and that too was of the spoiled variety.
Once fermented in a bottle, just looking at it, let alone taking a sip, would make you feel your soul had been sullied.
If Anke had felt a bit smug upon hearing that this foreigner wanted to purchase their beer, now he only felt humiliated.
What wrong had "Uncle Pepper" from his own establishment done to be compared with these monstrosities?
"How should I put it? Our restaurant’s chef has a unique understanding of delicacies,"
Liu Zheng shrugged.
"Most of the items on this list, I know where to buy them,"
Anke said after finishing reading the list.
"That’s great, then could you please draw me a map?"
He said cheerfully.
The items on this list already accounted for more than half, and as long as he could purchase everything, his task could be considered minimally complete.
Although the remaining half of the list clearly contained more precious items, the White Feather Chicken hadn’t said anything about valuing the task by its worth.
"I can’t draw maps. Plus, Yate’s city layout is very complicated, and it’s night now. Even if I drew you a map, you would have a hard time finding the right places,"
Anke shook his head.
"So what should I do?"
"Why don’t you just stay at the tavern for now, and go out looking after the Pale Night ends?"
Anke suggested.
By now, he genuinely believed that this foreigner had come to procure goods.
"When will it end?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"I don’t know, maybe in a day, maybe three, or maybe it will never end,"
Anke said after a pause.
"I can’t wait that long. If I don’t complete my task on time, our chief chef will surely take the opportunity to slice me up and roast me on the spot,"
He shook his head.
"Is your restaurant really that cruel?"
Anke was shocked.
"That’s why I tell you the outside world is dangerous, boss,"
Liu Zheng sighed.
"Then you really have it tough,"
Anke looked at him with sympathy.
At the same time, he thought about his own family’s relocation to Yate.
Could it be that his father’s decision to move to Yate all those years ago wasn’t just to cure an illness but also to escape danger?
"It’s alright, I’m used to it,"
Liu Zheng replied, scratching under the chin of San Huamao.
"But even if you do finish the procurement, you can’t get out. The Church people must have closed off the city gates by now,"
Anke found a critical point.
"Right, how did you get in?"
He suddenly thought of a question.
"Oh, I climbed over the city wall to get in,"
Liu Zheng replied nonchalantly.
"Gulp!"
Anke swallowed hard.
He realized he might have really let a formidable character into their midst.
