Chapter 244 - 241 When You Gaze Into the Abyss
Chapter 244: Chapter 241 When You Gaze Into the Abyss
"Let’s go."
In the kitchen, White Feather Chicken didn’t say much, just led him and San Huamao down the corridor.
Perhaps because of the journey, San Huamao had also changed into a new outfit.
Not only had it put on a vest and boots, but it also donned a Fisherman’s hat.
Hmm, it looked somewhat familiar.
They emerged from the corridor to find two uniformed individuals waiting outside, with a black official car parked nearby.
The pure white uniform had a red wax seal stamp on the upper left corner, marking it with the symbol of a door.
Their heads were covered by similarly pure white wide-brimmed hats, in the middle of which dangled a symbol of two crossed keys.
One key facing up, the other facing down.
From the hats to their leather shoes, every detail was meticulously seen to, exuding an air of efficiency and rigor.
As for their looks, they were nondescript; the standard appearance of mid-to-low-level government employees.
When they saw someone come out, the two uniformed men turned their gazes toward them.
Upon seeing Liu Zheng, a flash of surprise and curiosity crossed their eyes.
"These are the individuals selected for the outbound purchasing mission."
White Feather Chicken introduced.
"Good. Please sign here."
One of the uniformed men took a document and a pen from his briefcase and handed them to White Feather Chicken.
White Feather Chicken didn’t even look at it, simply flipped to the last page, signed her name, and then returned it to the uniformed man.
Liu Zheng watched from the side, his eyelid twitching; slaves were not transferred this breezily even in the darkest days of chattel slavery.
But then again, considering that City Hall’s documents were likely standardized, reading them or not probably made no difference.
"Please get in the car,"
the uniformed man said after putting away the document, then opened the car door.
San Huamao reluctantly took one last look at the restaurant before dejectedly entering the vehicle.
Liu Zheng wasn’t as attached as the cat, but still subconsciously stared at the restaurant for a few seconds.
After all, his experiences during this period had been so intense that he felt as if he had been working there for half a lifetime.
Most creatures need a sense of safety, and one major source of it is a familiar environment.
Although the Bloody Restaurant was not exactly a safe place, compared to the unknown beyond the borders, it still made Liu Zheng feel a bit reluctant to leave.
However, he quickly gathered his emotions and climbed into the car.
Gorgeous gardens may abound, but they’re not for long-term dwelling.
After all, he would come back.
The car door shut automatically, and everything outside was isolated.
Liu Zheng looked out the window, only to see pitch darkness.
"Do not try to open the windows or the car door. Attempting to do so will only cause trouble for yourself and yield no other outcome,"
the uniformed man in the front passenger seat said.
"Don’t worry. I’m a person who least likes to court trouble, whether for myself or for others,"
he replied with a smile.
"I’d like to believe you, but according to the records we received, you seem to be inconsistent with what you’re saying,"
the passenger-seat uniformed man replied with a smile.
"That must be a discrepancy in the records,"
Liu Zheng said without a trace of embarrassment.
"My name is Liu Zheng, and this is Salmon. I don’t know how to address you two?"
Seeing that they seemed willing to communicate, he tentatively asked.
"You can call me 8848, and he is 4399,"
replied the uniformed man beside Liu Zheng.
"Nice names."
Liu Zheng said sincerely.
One signifies great wealth and honor, the other a strong vitality.
"Your name is also good. Liu Zheng, preserving justice,"
4399, sitting in the driver’s seat, suddenly spoke up.
"Hmm?"
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
These two, their attitude towards him seemed a bit too friendly.
"We are from the Pet Refusal Faction."
It seemed that 8848 knew what Liu Zheng was thinking and took the initiative to explain.
"Anti-Pet Faction?"
"That’s the group within humanity that refuses to use humans as pets. We appreciate what you did with the ’Sunshine’ pet store explosion."
elaborated further.
"I see."
He said, suddenly enlightened.
At the same time, he mentally applauded General Services.
Although expensive, they really got things done after taking money. Even the staff liaisons at City Hall were so well arranged.
"If I may ask, if human pets can assist with your work, why do you refuse to use humans as pets?"
Liu Zheng asked out of curiosity.
To say it was out of racial sentiment would be somewhat hypocritical.
"It’s mainly for the elevation of our racial status. A race that still has a large population being raised as pets or food cannot possibly be promoted to a higher status."
provided the reason.
"Oh."
He nodded but did not pursue the subject further.
Because he keenly sensed the danger in continuing this topic.
Humans already occupied numerous positions in City Hall. If they were to be promoted to a higher status, could Metropolis’s current power structure still be maintained?
Seeing that Liu Zheng had stopped talking, 8848 and 4399 seemed somewhat disappointed, but they gained a bit more appreciation for him.
Decisive when it’s needed, cautious when it’s called for. He was indeed talented.
"If you don’t want to chat, then get some sleep."
suddenly said and then pressed a button.
Soothing violin music flowed from the car speakers. Amidst the silky performance, Liu Zheng and San Huamao quickly felt a strong drowsiness and soon fell into a deep slumber.
"Time to wake up."
After an unknown amount of time, 4399’s voice rang in their ears.
Liu Zheng and San Huamao immediately woke from their sleep, feeling no grogginess whatsoever.
"You can get out of the car now."
said.
He and San Huamao exchanged glances, then each opened the car door and stepped out.
When he saw the scene outside, a deep shiver took over his mind.
Below Liu Zheng’s feet was a patch of grass, and beyond that grass lay an abyss with no visible end.
So wide, so deep, that even though there was no water in the Abyss, he felt as though he was facing an ocean.
Across the Abyss was a similarly endless black line.
As Liu Zheng focused on the black line, it slowly arched upward, forming a hunched black figure that reached out to him with a hand that kept liquefying.
That hand instantly spanned the infinite distance, the dripping oil-like black liquid nearly filling the entire Abyss.
The previously dry Abyss almost instantly became a real ocean, a black ocean.
"Reason degradation immunity successful."
The system’s notification suddenly sounded, snapping Liu Zheng awake.
He took an involuntary step backward, nearly tripping over himself.
"It’s okay, It can’t come over."
steadied him, saying calmly.
Hearing his words, Liu Zheng steadied himself and looked forward again.
The black line was still just a line, the Abyss still an abyss.
"Welcome to the Borderlands."
patted his shoulder and said.
"This is the Borderlands?"
Liu Zheng muttered to himself.
It was completely different from what he had imagined, yet fittingly in line with Metropolis’s style.
"No, this is just one kind of Borderlands."
came over and said.
"And the place you’re going to is over there."
He raised his hand, pointing in one direction.
Following his gesture, Liu Zheng saw a white gate standing alone on the distant grassland.
