Chapter 188: Chapter 188 Is Your Life So Cheap?

The second visit to West River Center, there were noticeably fewer people than last time.

Until Liu Zheng reached the front entrance, he had only seen a few people enter and exit.

A white-collar worker with black-framed glasses and graffiti style came out of the office building, pausing when he saw him.

Then, his abstract face revealed an expression that was both excited and fearful.

"What are you looking at? Four-eyes, watch out or I’ll beat you up."

Liu Zheng shook his tentacle menacingly.

The bespectacled white-collar worker silently lowered his head and walked past him.

Just as they brushed shoulders, the white-collar worker suddenly pulled a pen from his pocket and thrust it towards Liu Zheng’s carotid artery.

His mouth, a mere slit, opened to reveal a sinister smile, with no teeth inside—just pitch black darkness.

"You’re so eager to die? Then I’ll grant your wish."

Liu Zheng didn’t even turn his head; his tentacles wrapped around the white-collar worker’s arms from below.

The tip of the golden pen was less than a centimeter from his carotid artery, but it became an unreachable distance.

It was only then that he suddenly turned around, and saw the white-collar worker’s graffiti-style smile.

"That’s an ugly smile if I ever saw one."

Liu Zheng’s mouth twitched, and then he swung his third tentacle and smacked the man hard across the face.

"Hurry up, give me a new smile."

The slap was so powerful that it made the white-collar worker’s ink on his face smudge.

The white-collar worker was stunned, then forced a more strained smile.

"Even uglier than before."

He dealt another heavy smack, this time causing the white-collar worker’s mouth to shift to the other side of his face.

"Can’t you manage a decent smile? Like me. Look, the standard sunny, cheerful, big boy."

Liu Zheng opened his maw wide, revealing sharp teeth.

The bespectacled white-collar worker leaned his head back in fear, worried that Liu Zheng would bite his face off.

"With your strength and courage, you dare to ambush me? Who gave you the guts?"

This time, Liu Zheng aimed a tentacle at the man’s face, completely disarranging his facial features.

"Speak up, why did you attack me?"

He demanded.

The bespectacled man hung his head, remaining silent.

"Not talking, huh? Fine, I’ll take you to Unlucky Coffee right now, and you can cover the tip."

As Liu Zheng spoke, he dragged him toward the direction of Unlucky Coffee.

"I’ll speak."

Looking at the blood-dripping deer head staring at him, the bespectacled man said in terror.

"So you can talk. You have three chances to explain yourself clearly; if you don’t, prepare for kneading, eye scraping, and ear picking."

Liu Zheng spoke ominously.

"Our director said, if anyone kills you, they could be promoted to director’s assistant immediately, and when there’s a vacancy, they’d be put in a manager position."

The bespectacled man spoke rapidly.

"Your director? Are you in the same department as Wang Manni?"

He inquired.

"Same company, but different department."

"So what’s your director meddling with this for?"

Liu Zheng curiously asked.

"Because the Manager Wang you killed was a spy our director had placed in that department."

The bespectacled man explained.

"Oh, now I understand."

He nodded.

The bespectacled man’s director was buying bones by spending a thousand gold pieces.

A spy who had died—for whom he was willing to offer such a high price to avenge—would certainly reap even more when alive.

"So anyone who kills me gets rewarded?"

"No, only people from our department."

The bespectacled man clarified.

"How do the abilities of the people in your department compare to yours?"

Liu Zheng continued his questioning.

"People at the same job level are more or less similar, but even those with higher ranks than mine wouldn’t be much stronger than me if they tried to kill you."

The bespectacled man said.

"Why is that?"

"I only know the outcome, not the reason."

The bespectacled man shook his head.

He knew something, but Liu Zheng had already guessed a bit.

It must be because the reward offered by that director was somewhat irregular.

"Good. Then it’s time for you to die."

He pulled out his boning knife, aiming it at the bespectacled man’s neck.

Just as the man had attempted to stab him, he would return the favor.

"Don’t! I have a wife and children, please don’t kill me!"

The bespectacled man screamed.

"Seriously, it’s a bit funny for a Metropolis resident to say such a line, you know?"

Liu Zheng looked at him vacantly.

"I can pay to spare my life."

The bespectacled man quickly changed his plea.

"That’s more like it. How much?"

He tilted the knife ever so slightly, thrusting it into the man’s shoulder, then twisted it.

"Three...ah!"

The bespectacled man screamed in agony.

"Thirty thousand? With that little money you want to buy your life? Then your life is too cheap."

Liu Zheng shook his head, then pulled out the boning knife.

Another scream came from the bespectacled man.

"Shh, don’t shout. Everyone is working, it’s impolite to disturb. Continue and it’ll be rude."

The bloodied boning knife was inserted into the bespectacled man’s mouth, silencing him.

"Also, be quick about using your clothes to catch the blood; don’t dirty the floor and cause trouble for others."

Liu Zheng, remembering the last time someone spat blood everywhere, warned him.

"Mmm mmm."

Beneath his glasses, red tears flowed from the bespectacled man’s eyes.

"Hey, right, where’s the cleaning lady?"

He took a look around but didn’t see any sign of the cleaner.

Liu Zheng frowned, feeling that something was off.

"Speak up, how much you got? Say too little, and I’ll cut off your head and sell it to Unlucky Coffee," he said fiercely.

"Fifty thousand, that’s really all I have. I’m just an associate. To get into the company I spent all my family’s money," the bespectacled man said pitifully.

"Fifty thousand won’t buy your life," Liu Zheng shook his head.

As the bespectacled man succumbed to despair, Liu Zheng spoke again.

"But you can sell your life to me."

"Huh?" The bespectacled man looked at him, puzzled.

"Come with me."

Liu Zheng wrapped an arm around the bespectacled man’s neck and pulled him aside.

"What’s your name?"

He asked.

"Yu, Yu Huanshui," the bespectacled man shivered as he responded.

"How many years have you been with the company?"

"Three years."

The man with glasses said.

"Three years and still a specialist?"

"No degree, no gifts given, no connections—this is as far as it goes."

The man with glasses said with a wry smile.

"Do you want to be a manager?"

"Yes."

"How badly do you want it?"

"I want it so much that I could die after becoming one."

The man with glasses said through gritted teeth.

"That desperate? But if you die right after becoming one, you won’t have made any money."

Liu Zheng said.

"If a manager dies in the line of duty, the compensation is two million."

"Wow, that’s not a small amount."

It seemed like Metropolis’s companies had a bit more conscience than those in reality—or at least, their competition was a bit more intense.

"I can help you become a manager."

He said.

"Really?"

The man with glasses said, his face lighting up with surprise.

"You should know about Wang Manni’s situation. If I could help her become a manager, I could help you too."

"But our manager wouldn’t order takeout."

The man with glasses said.

And waiting for their manager to be forced into ordering was like waiting for a pie in the sky.

"If he doesn’t order, you can trick him into doing it."

"Besides, I’m not just good for fighting. Money, force, brains, background, connections—I’ve got everything you need."

Liu Zheng said.

"So, what do I need to do for you?"

The man with glasses asked cautiously.

"For now, you don’t need to do anything. I’ll call you when I need something. Don’t worry, I never trouble my partners, and Wang Manni can attest to that."

"Okay."

The man with glasses said, pushing up his glasses.

"Then hand over the money."

He extended a tentacle.

"Huh?"

"You didn’t think there would be no price for ambushing me, did you? I won’t ask for much—just twenty thousand."

Liu Zheng said.

It was just the right amount to cover the money spent on the alcohol.

"All right then."

The man with glasses reluctantly took out the money.

"Pleasure doing business. Now go back to work."

He patted the man with glasses on the shoulder.

"I was actually about to go out to meet a client."

The man with glasses said helplessly.

"Then go. Oh, does your client like Unlucky Coffee?"

Liu Zheng asked.

"I’ve already paid your protection fee."

The man with glasses said, sounding a bit aggrieved.

"I’m not asking you to buy it, I’ll buy it for you."

"Ah? Then they definitely like it."

The man with glasses quickly said.

"Good, then wait here."

He turned and went into Unlucky Coffee, and shortly after, he came out again with a bunch of drinks and desserts in hand.

"You... are you okay?"

The man with glasses asked carefully, looking at Liu Zheng’s bloody face.

"I’m fine, it’s a minor thing, I’m used to it by now. How many do you want?"

He asked, waving a tentacle.

"Two will be enough."

The man with glasses said.

"Here, do you want a dessert?"

"No need, the client likes spicy food."

The man with glasses shook his head.

"Oh. Well, if you could get a serving of Hell Dragon Fly spicy soup from Oynk, you’d probably seal the deal with this client."

Liu Zheng said.

"You’re close with the Heavenly Butcher too?"

The man with glasses said, surprised.

"Close? We’ve even split the loot before. Why, you know it too?"

"I couldn’t possibly connect with someone of that stature. But a colleague of mine sold meat there before."

The man with glasses waved his hand dismissively.

"Oh. Alright, you better get going."

"Will do."

They exchanged phone numbers and then parted ways.

Liu Zheng returned to the entrance of the office building but still saw no sign of the janitor.

He frowned slightly and walked into the building.

Fortunately, that security guard was still there.

Seeing that the person entering was Liu Zheng, he ignored him and continued to play with his phone.

The security guard ignored Liu Zheng, but Liu Zheng approached him proactively.

"I can’t help you with the access control this time; you’ll have to figure it out yourself."

The security guard said without lifting his head.

"I’m not asking about that. Where’s the janitor?"

"Why are you asking about her?"

The security guard raised his head.

"It’s not often I come here. I have to say hello. I also bought some drinks for you guys."

Liu Zheng lifted the bag dangling from his tentacle.

"She’s probably not going to be able to enjoy them."

The security guard said, blowing his nose.

"Where did she go?"

"She’s gone to be a waitress on the 11th floor."

The security guard said.

"The 11th floor?"

"Didn’t the elevator operator take you to that floor last time?"

"Oh, that’s right."

It was the floor that turned into a jungle once he got out, making him feel very unsafe.

"That’s a space where only managers and higher-ups go, akin to a recreational leisure area."

The security guard explained.

"Isn’t it good to work as a waitress in a leisure area?"

He had thought that the janitor had been fired.

"Ha, you think that’s what they use for entertainment?"

The security guard said with a sneer.
