Chapter 99: Caravan To Burton

Chapter 99: Caravan To Burton

The next morning, the Princess’ maids woke everyone up right at dawn by bringing in food and getting the Princess awake and ready for the day, while Dominic sat in the side bedroom and tried not to laugh at her complaints.

After ten minutes, one of the servants came into the room and motioned for Dominic to come out, as Princess Alexis was properly dressed now, and the food was getting cold.

"The King has prepared the caravan for you, and the extra wagons are loaded with supplies, to be stored in the Keep, in case of siege.

Some of the others have already left, and the unit is on its way to Burton. The caravan will be six trucks, masquerading as merchant supplies." The Palace staff member explained.

Dominic nodded in understanding. It was simple enough to pretend to be merchants, but much harder to fool any spies that might be watching for the caravan to leave the Palace.

"Where is the caravan staged?" He asked.

Alexis smirked as she realized where his mind had gone. After an assassination attempt on the both of them, it would be far too easy to track them down again if whoever the traitors still in the Palace were got to watch them get in and leave.

"The main staging area is being used by the Crown Prince and his Regiment. Your caravan is at the Commoner Staging area. Just be sure that you get the right one, as there is another Royal Caravan in disguise waiting there." She explained.

Dominic smiled. That worked much better for him. The staging area should be packed with adventurers who were looking for easy money dealing with the excess Goblins while the Army dealt with the invasion force.

At least, that was what Dominic thought as they prepared to leave the castle.

Alexis hid her bright blonde hair under a colourful patterned scarf, and put on a shapeless dress common among the maids when they were on days off and wanted to avoid attention from the Noblemen.

"Are you not going to change?" She asked as Dominic stood in front of her in forge apprentice uniform.

"Nope. A Royal Apprentice belongs anywhere in the city. If I am seen at Master Pops’ forge, at the bakery next door, or even at the staging area, it’s fine. Especially with a blacksmith badge on my uniform." Dominic replied with a shrug, then adjusted his old leather flat cap on his head and slid his goggles over them and put on his old coat.

"Alright, shall we head out?" He asked politely.

The Princess was skeptical, but when Dominic slung his arm around her as they walked out of the Palace and winked at the guard, who clearly didn’t recognize her, she realized that certain groups of people really were invisible.

The Guard simply opened the door for them, didn’t ask for identification, or even where they were going.

The clear assumption was that Dominic and his anonymous girlfriend were headed out into the city to find somewhere private to spend the day. That was the best possible outcome for them, as nobody would question that sort of action, even if they did gossip about which of the maids or cooks might have taken off with him for the day.

They walked side by side to the staging area, past crowds of nervous civilians who didn’t look twice at the pair of them.

Dominic turned toward the doors of Pops’ forge and saw a note stuck to it that said he was recruited to the Palace Forges for the duration of the war. But the forge wasn’t the real target of his attention.

It was the fact that there were two convoys on the street, ready to go, when all the other trucks in the staging area were set up for an extended camping stay.

He had forgotten that the city gates were locked.

Nobody was coming in or out.

Dominic led Princess Alexis into the bakery next to Pops, and the old woman smiled at them.

"That must be your convoy waiting in the street, Princess. Excellent disguise today." The old woman greeted them.

"How did you know?" Alexis asked.

"Did you think that a bit of makeup would make me not recognize you? I birthed your great-grandmother, young lady. I would know you anywhere." The old woman laughed, then began loading cream filled sweet buns into a bag.

"Bring these with you. Do you have an explanation for the adventurers when you get ready to leave?" She added.

Princess Alexis nodded. "We are to tell them that it’s Palace Business, war supplies for the front."

"That would explain why the gates open for you. But it’s not exactly subtle."

The Princess shrugged. "Those are our orders, and what all the convoy members have been instructed to say to outsiders."

The old woman turned to Dominic. "And what is your excuse?"

"I’m just here to fix the wagons."

The baker laughed. "That’s more like it. Alright, stay safe, and I will see you when you get back. Tell that grumpy old man to come visit me more often. I had to give away a whole bag of pretzels yesterday before they went stale."

They stepped outside with two bags of baked goods, and Princess Alexis instinctively turned to the front truck.

"That’s not our ride. You’re with me on this trip." Dominic informed her, just loud enough for the curious adventurers across the street.

One of them, a man in an expensive coat, perked up.

"Are they going to open the gates for you?" He called, and subtly nodded to Dominic’s apprentice badge adorned uniform.

Dominic gave him a thumbs up. "They will, I’m told they’ve got a Royal Pass for the trip and everything. Do you need a ride? I don’t think they’ll let any other trucks through, but you can ride with one of the drivers if you know your way around a shotgun."

Dominic escorted Princess Alexis into the forge wagon in the middle of the column, and then tossed a silver coin up to the driver, who smirked as he tried not to laugh.

Sneaking a lover along on a Royal Assignment was a ballsy move, but it looked like the adventurers in the staging area were buying their disguise.
