Chapter 462: The friend
Jabi
I get a scolding from the principal for coming so late but other than that, classes go well and the day runs out smoothly. It is weird being away from Darrien and I start to have regrets midday as I sit alone in the cafeteria. There is a tray of food in front of me but the only thing I have been hungry for is blood. I am halfway through the flask and I don’t want to run out before the school day is over.
I look at the sandwich on my plate and tug at it, as I grab my phone from the table. I want to talk to Dar but I know he will be worried if I message him so early. I am having a hard time here and all I feel is regretting this decision. I wish I could have thought about it some more before coming back to school.
"Is this seat taken,’’ a voice distracts me from my thoughts and I look up to see a guy with the brightest smile on his face. His eyes are a light blue and they are a bit smudged up. He is wearing a black long sleeve shirt with a white collar and he has a dark blue tie with a red dot on it. He has a white button-up short sleeve shirt underneath. His hair is brown and slightly messy. He has a small nose. He is handsome but I don’t know what he wants right now.
"No, it’s not taken,’’ I say and he sits down.
"I’m Lenny,’’ he says and he extends his hand.
"I’m Jabi,’’ I say as I shake his hand, his hand is very cold. Almost as cold as Darrien’s.
"Nice to meet you,’’ he says as he sits down.
"Me too,’’ I say and we both eat our food.
"So what grade are you in,’’ he asks.
"I’m a sophomore,’’ I say.
"Me too,’’ he says and we both laugh.
"So what do you do when you’re not at school?’’ he asks me with that smile still on his face. I want to show interest in him, I want to make friends with him but I don’t know how to do it.
"I don’t know what you mean by that,’’ I say.
"I mean what do you do for fun?’’ he asks.
"I don’t know,’’ I say.
"What do you mean by that?’’ he furrows his brows in confusion. I get that he is trying to make conversation but I haven’t really had a fun life per se. I’ve just been living--that is until Darrien and even with that, I just like to spend all my time with him.
"You’re new in school, I haven’t seen you around before.’’
I nod "I was homeschooled,’’ I say.
"I see,’’ he says and he looks down at his food "It seems like you want me out of here and away from you.’’
I look up at him and shake my head immediately "No, I like your company, it is nice having someone to talk to.’’
He smiles at me and I start to feel a little better.
"I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels that way,’’ he says.
I nod
"So what are you doing after school?’’ he asks.
"It’s weird that he just walked up to me and wants to be friends. I have never had a friend before, so this is all new to me and I don’t know how to handle it.
"Uh...nothing,’’ I tell him shyly. He is still staring at me with this intensity that I cannot figure out. I look away from him and to the sandwich on my plate because it is better to focus on something inanimate.
"Do you want to hang out? I know this great bar on the other side of town. We could use this opportunity to get to know each other since we have decided to become friends."
I raise a brow "We decided?’’ I ask him with a smile on my face. He is very forward, that is the opposite of me. I could never be this direct about anything. I am surprised he is even interested in being friends.
"Yeah, let’s swap numbers,’’ he asks calmly, pushing his phone to me. I watch the unlocked phone on the table, unsure of what to do with it. I don’t know if this is a good idea. Darrien might not like him and if he doesn’t, then I can’t be friends with him.
"Come on,’’ he taps his finger on the table. I give in and pass my phone to him. I watch him input his number into my phone with a smile still on his face.
"Your turn,’’ he tells me and I give in to his pressure. The bell rings for the end of lunch and he jolts up from the chair. "I will call you Jabi,’’ he points to me before leaving me at the table, confused and a little curious.
A little over an hour into the next class, I feel a sensation inside me that I know all too well.
Thirst.
I pick up my thermal flask from the floor beside my table but it is empty. The English teacher is talking about something but I can’t pay attention as I start to panic.
"Shit,’’ I whisper out in frustration.
I can feel my body start to lose control. I know what will happen if I stay in class. If I am around all these people, with blood running through their veins.
I know I will want to feed.
I stand up and quickly and with permission, I rush to the bathroom. My phone is in my grip as my hands start to tremble violently. I need to call Darrien even though that was the last thing I wanted to do.
I hear footsteps outside the stall and I stiffen for fear of being around any humans. The scent is familiar but I can tell it that whoever it is, is not human. I hold my breath as the footsteps stop in front of my stall.
"Do you need help?’’ I hear the voice and panic takes hold of me once again.
Shit.
