The next day, I go into one of the guest rooms that Belis spent the night in and he is already awake and seated on the bed. almost like he was waiting for me to come. "You’re up,’’ I mutter as I slowly walk into the room.

He looks up and shrugs "I don’t sleep.’’ he tells me nonchalantly. I haven’t figured how I want to handle everything he told me last night. I don’t have the words to make him appreciate his life. I don’t have a right to tell him that he needs to keep living. As Gyles said, it is his life and he needs to make the choice on his own.

"I need to get ready for work,’’ he manages, with a deep exhale. I nod as he stands up from the bed after putting on his shoes.

"About last night...—"

He stops me "Forget about last night. I don’t know what I was thinking. I shouldn’t have acted so stupid,’’ he shrugs again. he is acting like last night didn’t happen. I don’t want to discard the things he said. I want us to talk about it and I want to help him.

’’I am not talking about the way you acted, I am talking about everything else.’’

He sighs and then runs his hands through his hair "It doesn’t matter Alanis. I shouldn’t have said all those things, so can we pretend like it didn’t happen.’’

I shake my head because I don’t want to pretend like it didn’t happen. I want to help him—but only if he wants my help.

"You should talk to Drucilla, she is worried.’’

He sighs again, almost like he forgot that I am stubborn and I wouldn’t just let this go so easily. "Don’t worry about her, she was just being emotional. I will talk to her. are you going to drive me home or do I just run?’’ he asks as he heads in the direction of the door.

"You are evading Belis, I need to confirm that you are okay before I let you go home."

He scoffs "Are you telling me that you wouldn’t let me go home?’’ he smiles in disbelief. I have no right to stop him from leaving but I want to help him. I wish he wouldn’t just make this hard.

"That’s not what I meant. I don’t want you going home when we still have a lot to talk about,’’ I grab his arm gently and his eyes shift to my hand on him.

"Let me go, Lan,’’ he calls me by the name he used to call me when I was a newborn vampire. His eyes are glaring but I can feel the pain emanating from him. fuck, I want to help him so badly but I don’t know how to.

"I don’t want to,’’ I tell him.

"I don’t want another attack from your guard dog, so It would be best if you just let me the fuck go and continue playing house with your dog of a boyfriend."

He is being a jerk and it is getting to me. I don’t like it when anyone insults beau. It ignites a spark inside me that is sometimes uncontrollable.

This time, I have to control myself because I don’t want to hurt him. I want to help him and returning the same attitude to him is not going to help.

"Should I tell father what you told me last night? Do you want me to leave it for him to handle?’’

His eyes open wide from the shock of my threat. If I can’t help him, then I will actually have to speak to the rest of my family.

He forces his arm away from my grip and walks away from me and to the door. I am quick to beat him at this race by running over to him and shutting the door "I am not letting you go,’’ I state calmly.

His eyes twitch as he tries to restrain himself. I see the strain on his neck, the vein that is about to pop out.

"You don’t understand. You have things to look forward to. I have nothing.’’ He finally says something that he is feeling. He is finally opening up and all it took was me forcing him to stay here.

"That is not true. You have me, you have the whole family, you have a lot even though it might not seem like it.’’

"What is the point of it all. Living forever? The same cycle on and on. Is there an end game?’’

His questions should be rhetorical because I don’t know how to answer him. I understand what he means. Living forever, waking up each day and knowing that your life is never-ending.’’

"Do you want a break?" I ask him

He looks away from me "Asking for a break is weak. I don’t know if I deserve to ask for that." he tells me sadly.

He knows what I mean by a break. Going into a sleep state is normal for vampires. The only person that has gone through the sleep state is our father. Completely shutting down for a while. As long as you want. It seems like Belis needs that right now.

he covers his face with his hands and I watch him as he starts to cry. I want to help him but this is something he needs to figure out on his own.

"Doing this doesn’t make you weak. It makes you strong to admit that you need a break. When you are ready to come back, you can.’’ I tell him encouragingly. I don’t want Belis gone but I also don’t want him living a life that is tiring to him. a break could be what he needs.

"I don’t know how to tell her,’’ he uncovers his face slowly.

"I will come with you. we can talk to the family together. what do you say?’’ I ask him because I want to be there for him, the way he was when I first met him.

"Okay. Thank you.’’
