Chapter 361: Everything is going to be alright

Alanis

"So, father mentioned that you are pregnant. I didn’t know how to even comprehend that but I guess anything is possible in this life.’’ Belis says the one thing that I was avoiding. I didn’t want today to be focused on my pregnancy and how it is supposed to be impossible.

I just wanted to have a normal dinner with my family without any awkwardness.

"Yes, I am,’’ I manage already getting tense.

He raises a brow "How does it work? Do you have the details? I would like to know,’’ he drinks from his glass of red wine. His attention and everyone on this table are fixed on me. Darrien and Jabi are still missing.

I don’t know why I expected Darrien to show up on time. he would have been perfect to lighten up this situation. I kinda needed him as a buffer and he is not here.

"Why do you need to know?’’

He shrugs "It is medically impossible to carry a child as a man. How is it going to happen? Aren’t you all curious?’’ he turns around to look at everyone else. They all remain quiet. beau is next to me and I am sure he can sense my discomfort. I don’t even know how this pregnancy is going to work. Alby has explained it all to me but the details are not important to me. the fact that is happening is all that is important and he wants to focus on the how’s and why’s.

"I don’t think this is appropriate dinner conversations,’’ Beau interjects and speaks up for me as he takes a bite of his steak. I watch him because, at this moment, I don’t know how to handle all these questions. I am just coming around to the pregnancy and I don’t need anyone asking me about it and expecting me to have answers to everything.

"What kind of conversations are we supposed to have?’’ Belis asks with a straight face. I don’t know what game he is trying to pull but I do know that he is up to something. Belis is the most mature out of all of us and right now, he is acting like a child.

"Enough,’’ father tells him with a glare. "Do pay no mind to your brother. He is still trying to understand what is happening with you.’’

"This is not a way to cause some kind of ruckus, I am just curious,’’ he shrugs nonchalantly.

"All that matters is Lanis is healthy and there is no problem with the pregnancy. You don’t have to worry about anything else,’’ Beau speaks up for me and I am grateful all over again. he takes my hand in his and the squeeze is all the comfort I need at this moment.

"Good to know," Belis mutters but it seems like he is not done with this conversation. I hear the front door open and release a sigh of relief because Darrien’s scent is very strong. Even though he is late, I am glad he is here.

"How are things apart from the elephant in the room?’’ Father asks me calmly. Our conversations are stiff and this has me worried because I want things to end alright. I want things to go back to the way they were.

Granted, apart from our usual check-ins. It’s not like we were the kind of family to have dinner together. we all went along with our own businesses. Maybe this is not as awkward as I think it is. maybe this is just how it has always been.

"Sorry we are late,’’ Darrien walks into the dining room with Jabi tightly in his grip. my eyes stay on his hand because I wish I had the confidence he has. There is no shame as he leads Jabi into the room and places him on one of the empty chairs.

"As usual,’’ Belis makes a snide comment.

He is on a roll today.

"Why are you so late?’’ Father asks him.

He shrugs "I completely lost track of time. Jabi decided that he wanted to try something new tonight,’’ he winks at his mate and I can’t help but smile at how cute he is as he hides his face before it turns completely red. I don’t know what they are talking about but the way he says it makes me think of the nasty.

"Or is it that you just have no regard for anyone but yourself?’’ Belis accuses him. now he is picking a fight with Darrien.

Your brother is an asshole.

Beau sends me a mind link and I agree with him silently because that is not something I even want to think about. Belis is not as bad as he is acting right now and I wish they could all see the real him. He might not always be there but when he is, he has helped me. when father turned me, Darrien wasn’t a fan of mine. Belis was the one that helped me through the whole transition. Somehow, after meeting Beau, I feel like I kinda drifted from him. now I am more focused on my new family and maybe that is why he is upset.

Maybe I am just reaching but I will find a way to talk to him after dinner.

"Well not everyone is a stick in the mud like you are,’’ Darrien retorts with a tone that tells me that he is ready to pick a fight.

"Enough of this Belis, you are acting very rude tonight,’’ Father counter speaks. Everyone can tell that he is acting up, I will try to find out why before the night is over.

"Now, let me change the topic before this turns into an unnecessary argument." Father adds slowly turning to me "How has it been living in a community full of wolves. Are you settling in well?’’

I smile because this is the easiest question I have been asked today.

"Very well. The people here have accepted me like their own. things are going really well.’’ I look around the table and everyone has their eyes on me and for the first time tonight, I feel like things are going to be alright.
