The Werewolf's Vampire Mate -
Chapter 167: Selfishness
Chapter 167: Selfishness
Beau.
Meeting Lucinda is different from Atieno. She has this aura about her that screams hostility. She is not as easy to talk to as her brother. It is not like I have plans of making conversation but I mean, you’re in a car with two people, and you should at least be semi-friendly. We get to the community in no time and I am glad because the silence is fucking awkward.
’’We’re here,’’ I announce like I actually need to when it is very. She is the first to get off and I watch her as she walks over the pathway that leads to the gate. How did she even know? It’s not like she has ever been here before. I take a quick glance at Lanis and he smiles at me brightly ’’this will all be over soon,’’ he assures me.
I can’t wait to get rid of all these worries that come with Cassius. The only worry I want to have, are things concerning the pack and Lanis. Cassius’s drama has been dragged for too long. Gyles is still at the back seat. He doesn’t make a move to get out of the car. Looking at his eyes through the rearview mirror, It almost feels like he is there but pretending not to. I don’t know if he really knows what is going on and frankly, I don’t really care. Their story is sad, the only thing that makes me even feel a little bit sad for the bustard but all the bad things he has done make up for it.
’’We need to get him out of the car,’’ I tell Lanis as we both get down from the car. Lucinda is still waiting for us. Almost like she thinks we will speed this up because she is here. I don’t hold her on a high horse. How can she love someone like the man? I don’t even understand Cassius. He wasn’t a vampire when he was so in love with Gyles. He should have found his link when he was turned.
Maybe Gyles was his link and since he wasn’t really dead, he was alone?
’’I’ll handle this, can you get Eligio. I need to talk to him about something.’’
I don’t want to get sidetracked, getting Cassius reunited with Gyles is not the priority. Finding all the vampires’ links are. If Eligio can get into his mind, we won’t need him to tell us. Then we could get them and everyone will be happy.
’’Okay,’’
We all walk into the community together and part ways, since we are heading in different direction ’’He is not such a bad person, he just has a bad life,’’ Lucinda speaks once Lanis is gone. I look at her with confusion. I don’t know if she is talking about Cassius but she can’t be for real right now.
’’Just because you have a tough life doesn’t mean you should make other people’s life miserable.’’
That is how I see it but I can see where she is coming from, she loves the guy. So in her eyes, he could kill everyone and she will still see him as someone worth saving. ’’Is there any way you can give him another chance. See the kind of person he really is?’’ she smiles at me, her dimples pressing into her face. is this supposed to make me agree with her?
This is one of the original vampires. The first of her kind ever and she is trying to convince me that a killer can still be saved. There really is no convincing me, so I remain quiet as we get to the house that he is being kept. We have never really believed in reformism in the pack, that is why we don’t have cells that can be used as prisons. There was no reason to keep anyone on lockdown. It is just a small community.
I leave Gyles in the house, not sure how I intend on showing him to Cassius. I am so eager to see the pain he will feel after he sees him but I want to give Lucinda her chance with him. He might not react well to the whole thing, and in turn not give her the goodbye she desperately craves.
’’I plan on going in with you, cause I don’t trust you,’’
She nods in understanding, I mean I just met her for the first time today. Who knows if she plans on taking Cassius with her? There is no way in hell I will let anyone make me lose guard of this situation. Cassius looks up immediately the door is closed. I see the sigh of frustration as it leaves his lips. It doesn’t even look like he wants to see her. She walks over to him ’’Here to laugh at me?’’ he mutters with disinterest.
I stay by the corner of the room because I shouldn’t even be part of this conversation. Lucinda goes on one knee, now she is so close to him. Her eyes move back and forth. She is looking at the damage. The damage I caused. I am proud to say that this is all because of me. I will do it again in a heartbeat.
’’I came to see you, Cassius, you know I will never laugh at you.’’
He rolls his eyes, ’’Well you see me, I am dying. All my efforts for nothing,’’ he tells her just as his eyes shift to my direction and I look away from him, totally feeling uncomfortable at this moment.
’’You don’t have to die, you need to make amends before it is too late.’’
’’There is no making amends. I didn’t do anything wrong, I will never stop trying to make things right." I look at him again and there is no remorse in his eyes. He still thinks he is doing the right thing and as long as he is alive he will be stuck in the notion that he is doing the right thing. Killing innocent children and helpless people, killing people that didn’t do anything to you.
’’This is where you are wrong Cassius.’’ I interrupt them, slowly walking into the room. He looks up at me and the anger is evident on his face. He hates me so much, I don’t blame him, and I feel the same way about him. ’’You did all this because you are selfish, you were thinking about yourself, you didn’t do this for anyone but yourself,’’ I stop in front of him even though Lucinda’s eyes are pleading with me, I am not going to stand here and let him act all high and mighty.
’’You will never understand. No matter how much I show you,’’ he replies me with a chesty cough. Blood splatters out of his mouth. I look at his neck and the infection seems to be spreading, down his chest and arms. Yeah, it doesn’t look like he has much time left.
’’You’ve shown me everything, there is no more convincing me that this was an act of selfishness. You didn’t do this for Gyles. You used him as an excuse to show the real you. The monster that you are.’’
He sighs again but remains quiet.
Lucinda stands up and drags me away from him ’’Why are you doing this. Let me just talk to him first. You don’t understand anything,’’ she accuses me angrily.
’’What if I ripped out his heart yesterday, what if he was already dead, would you have the chance to redeem him?’’ I ask her wanting to rile her up even the more. She is standing there, trying to convince me that there is still a chance for him. How the fuck can she stay loving him.
If the tables were turned and this was Lanis. I will not blindly take his side. I wouldn’t continue pining over a man that has hurt so many souls.
’’Do you even want him to say goodbye to Gyles or are you just doing this out of your own selfishness?’’ She asks me.
’’Gyles?’’ Cassius interrupts us and for the first time today, I see interest in his eyes, mixed with confusion. I totally forgot that his sense of hearing is still very sharp. He has been listening to us. Just a mention of that guy’s name and he suddenly wants to engage in conversation. Even in this weakened state.
I walk away from Lucinda because I have given her the goodbye she wanted. There is nothing more I can do for her relationship with him. I want to end this now, there is no more debating it.
’’Yes, he is still alive. The man you were fighting for never died.’’ I stop in front of him again. His eyes remain wide from the shock of my words but there is also a hint of disbelief in them. He doesn’t believe me. Did he even search for him or did he just accept his death?
’’That’s impossible.’’
I nod, I expected this reaction that is why I brought Gyles to the community. He will not believe it until he sees him. ’’Why don’t I show you?’’
