The Werewolf's Vampire Mate -
Chapter 156: Rex’s fear comes to past.
Chapter 156: Rex’s fear comes to past.
Rex.
I have been thinking about everything that is happening and the fact that I cant do anything is pissing me off. I have always been useless. Beau has been able to cover up for me. Bing by his side has always made things easier than it should be for someone like me.
An omega.
The weakest of my kind.
Living is very hard, especially knowing that you will never be one of the strong contenders. In this situation, I have to go with the kids. Children are being taken to the same place as me—a grown-ass man. Darrien didn’t want to leave us. there is this fear that something would happen and we will be unable to protect ourselves. Jabi seems to think we can handle whatever comes our way. I don’t think so. I wouldn’t really be able to defend myself because I am a coward but I want to be optimistic. We made it out of there. The people on the pack aren’t as lucky as us, so we have to do whatever we can to help them. Darrien wasn’t supposed to be here with us. I know the only reason why he is, is because of his mate. Jabi has what I have always wanted. A mate, someone that would only see me. I want the love he has with Darrien. Yes, I can go as far as saying I am jealous. The envy I feel for what he has is laced with sadness. I am being patient but I want things to go faster than they are.
I am tired of being a burden to Beau. Whatever he does, he has to think about me. Rick put me close to him so that I could feed off his energy. Being that close to him has kept me alive and strong. Unlike Jabi, who had to fend for himself. I have been luckier than him. maybe that is why the deities blessed him earlier than me.
’’Are you sure we are fine on our own?’’ I ask him the minute Darrien finally gets off the bus and the driver starts it again. I don’t even know where we are going but apparently, Cranwell has someone waiting for us. the plan is to keep us safe until this is all over.
I don’t know when this will be over.
I must confess, I am fucking tired of all this.
Cassius has been nothing but a burden to us.
’’You want the honest answer?’’ he asks me, looking at me. I can smell the fear as it spills out of him.
’’Yes,’’ I reply him, looking at him in the process. It is already late in the night. We can’t even see the roads ahead. It seems like we are in the middle of nowhere and Jabi just sent the only person that can even remotely keep us from dying away.
’’Let’s just hope nothing happens.’’ He tells me and I don’t like his answer. I took his side because I felt bad. With all that is happening. Beau needs all the help he can get. Darrien is supposedly one of the strong contenders. He shouldn’t be here with us.
I am scared that we made a mistake letting him go. Cassius’s plan is to kill us all and some of us escaped, so obviously he will come looking. He wouldn’t just let us go like that. right?
’’What if they show up?’’ I ask him because, in things like this, you can never be too certain.
He shrugs and I look away from him. suddenly, my thoughts shift to Blue. What I would take to be with him right now. There is something about him that makes me feel very calm and right now I am a nervous wreck.
’’They won’t. You have to be optimistic,’’ he tells me and I watch him reach for the bag he has been clutching. He brings out a bottle and I watch as he starts to drink.
’’Blood?’’
He nods ’’I have to drink this whenever I start to feel hungry. I cant spiral out today.’’
I know that he is going through a transition but whatever he is going through is working for him. Jabi has never been outspoken. Tonight, he has said more words than me and he looks a lot healthier than all the time I have known him—which are years.
I pick at my nails to distract myself from everything and he gulps the bottle down, not leaving any inside. A little of the liquid spills to the side of his lips and I watch him as he wipes it off quickly.
’’Sorry,’’ he apologises for no reason.
I look out the window and the sky is dark, the trees are transcending from the speed we are going. In the blink of an eye, it seems like something runs in the side of my eye but I brush it off as an animal or something. In another second, another figure pops up ’’Did you see that?’’ I whisper to Jabi. He looks out the window and I watch him as he looks out for what I am talking about.
It might be my imagination but I can swear that I saw something.
’’There’s nothing out there,’’
I take a deep breath because I don’t want to be the cause of an alarm. I don’t want him to start panicking and shit. It might have been nothing.
’’I thought I saw something,’’ I tell him.
He smiles ’’We are all just nervous. Our mind is playing tricks on us,’’ he tries to rationalise, but I know that there was something out there. The minute I decide to sit down and try and relax, a sound comes from the under of the car. I stiffen against my seat as I feel the car slowing down.
’’We have a flat tyre, everyone just stay inside till I fix it,’’ the driver tells us. the people behind us start to mumble. I know everyone is scared—fuck, I am scared too.
’’It seems suspicious... don’t you think?’’ I ask Jabi because this is not a coincidence.
He furrows his brows, I know he is scared. He is trying to act tough but I see right through him. he cannot just become so brave overnight.
’’You have to stop being so worried. It is making me paranoid.’’ He pleads with me but that is out of my control. It is just who I am. I worry I think about things too deeply. That is my quirk and there is nothing I can do about it.
I stand up from the chair and he does the same, following me as I walk out of the bus ’’I said you should stay inside,’’ the man shouts at us with a glare. I ignore him because it looks like he is finding it difficult to do this on his own.
’’You look like you need some help,’’ I point out.
He stops what he is doing, and I notice that the sleeves of his shirt are rolled up halfway and there is sweat trickling on his forehead ’’Sure,’’ he sighs in defeat. Jabi breathes heavily behind me. his scent comes off as even more scared. He doesn’t want to be out here, but it is not like I want that either. For once, I want to be of help, and I know how to change tyres. So it is the least that I can do.
’’How did this happen?’’ I ask him because people don’t just get flat tyres out of the blue—okay maybe they do but this just seems too suspicious to me. everything that is happening is making me paranoid.
What if somebody actually caused this, with the sole intention of getting us stranded. It seems like that Is what happened.
I don’t want to say anything because I don’t want to make anyone panic but that seems like the likely cause.
My eyes waver around in search of what could have caused this. ’’Flat tyres happen all the time, it is not unusual.’’ The man tells me with a shrug. He doesn’t have the same panicked expression on his face. he doesn’t know what he has gotten himself into. He is just a messenger. He doesn’t khow the gravity of the situation.
My eyes catch something shiny in the corner and I leave what I am doing and walk over to it. I see the wood before the nails. A cut out part of wood with nails sticking out of this. this just proves my thoughts.
Someone did this.
I pick up the wood and Jabi walks closer to me to get a better look ’’This is not an accident. Someone did this,’’ I shout so loud with my hands still shaking. The minute those words escape my lips, I see the shadow again. This time at the back of the driver. Before I can warn him, his neck is snapped and he is on the floor.
The man responsible smiles widely ’’Hello there omegas,’’ he licks his lips, a little too proud of himself.
Fuck.
