Chapter 149: More to the story

Alanis.

I can see him about to react.

I know a bad reaction from Beau when I see one and I don’t think him getting upset right now is the best thing for anyone. The Elis are not to be messed with. They have more power than anyone could imagine and just because they choose not to kill, they could do worse than death.

’’I am not playing this game with you people,’’ he says deadpan.

I watch him because right now his voice is still calm. He hasn’t reached that hot boiling stage yet. Not like I want him to. The moment he does, I will have to calm him down and take control of the situation.

’’This is not a game,’’ Atieno replies calmly.

He doesn’t see Beau as a threat.

’’We have to kill Cassius. I will not leave this to you people if you think you can just give him back the one person he has loved all his life and try to make things better. He doesn’t deserve this salvage. He only deserves death.’’

I get his point. I hate Cassius as much as he does and now they want to find a way to stop him without killing him. That is not the best idea, I know that but they must have their reasons. They don’t just do things without thinking first. They must have their reasons and that is why I want Beau to listen to them first, before reacting.

’’This is not about killing him. There is more to this. Cassius lost his humanity the day he lost Gyles. He is in that state that can be shut off. Don’t you at least want to give him a chance?’’

Is that their reason?

To me, that is not a good enough reason.

’’He killed my people. He wants to kill the rest of my family. He has been hunting my kind for years now and you are asking me to give him the benefit of the doubt?’’

Now his voice is laced with Anger. I can feel him getting to that stage that I don’t want him to. ’’We are not going to of this your way,’’ I speak out for the first time tonight. There is no way we are going into this with that notion. We are going into this to fight and then to win. There is no debating on that. Cassius can’t just decide to be a good person just because Gyles is alive.

’’What are you saying?’’ he asks even though I was plain and clear.

Beau watches me and I tell him to take a seat with a mind link. I don’t want him to end this meeting on a bad note with them. They are not the kind of people to make us do anything. They will not force us to do things their way, so I will handle this.

Beau sits on the couch again and I face Atieno with a smile on my face ’’We are not going to do this your way. We don’t want to go not this to save Cassius. As long as he is alive, he will always be a threat to us. You said Gyles is not the same. What exactly is wrong with him?’’

The man has been quiet all day. I want to know what is going on in his head. He is in this room but it seems like his mind is far away from here.

’’He was tortured for years. Starved, beaten and experimented on.’’

I furrow my brows ’’Experimented on?’’

He nods ’’We have been trying to get into his head for a while now. He has closed it off completely but from what we could gather, those wolves went into that house that night for Gyles. He was their main target all along.’’

’’So what does that mean?’’ beau interjects with curiosity.

’’We can’t tell you because we don’t know but things are not as black and white. Whatever that happened is unknown to us. Once we get a clearer picture, we will know how to handle things.’’

Beau sighs loudly ’’This doesn’t have anything to do with Cassius. He wasn’t the one that they took. He was safe. Gyles protected him, I saw it all and he used the love the man gave him and turned it to hate. He is a monster right now because that is who he has always been.’’ He is getting upset again.

’’Cassius is coming to the community tomorrow. I will be ready when he does and I won’t just sit back and see if he can come around. I will kill him.’’

With that he gets up from the couch and storms out of the room. I know he will not leave me, he is upset but also not angry enough to leave without me.

’’You are not listening to reason,’’ Atieno looks at Gyles again. ’’I believe he will come through. He just needs a lot of attention and time. We need to figure out why he was kidnapped. There is always a reason for every action.’’

I totally understand what he is saying but I also know that it has nothing to do with us. In this moment, right now, Cassius is a threat to us. He will not hesitate to kill us if he gets the chance. So why should we treat him differently?

’’How sure are you of his attack tomorrow?’’ Atieno asks me calmly.

’’Very sure.’’

He nods ’’We want to be present, give us the permission to and we will be there.’’

Will Beau really want them there? He is already pretty pissed off. Even though he doesn’t want to use Gyles, I actually think it is a good idea to. No matter how we look at it, Gyles will be the kind of distraction that we need. Cassius will not be able to handle him and that is when we attack. When he is not in his right frame of mind.

’’I can’t make that decision on my own,’’ I answer him honestly.

He nods again ’’Will you let me know if we are welcome?’’ his voice is the calmest I have ever heard. Atieno is the best of his siblings. He didn’t even use an ounce of anger today, even though I feel it etched deep within.

The Eli’s are the only ones that I can’t read. No matter how hard I try, their minds are completely closed off.

’’Okay.’’

I leave the hotel and Beau is outside in the car we took. He looks up at me immediately and I know he is trying to control his emotions. This is very hard for him and even though he has come a long way, he still has more work out cut for him in his anger issues. There is always a better way to handle things that storming off. He is the Alpha, the leader of a whole community and he needs to always act like a leader. I know he is frustrated. Cassius is getting into his skin, I just want this phase of our life to be over, so we can move on from this.

I walk to his side of the door and he winds the window down ’’I messed up right?’’ he asks with that guilty expression that only I can read.

The fact that he can admit to his mistakes is the first step ’’A little,’’ I manage a comforting smile to let him know that it will be fine.

’’Do you agree with him?’’

I shake my head immediately. I don’t actually agree with Atieno ’’No, we are killing Cassius.’’

He smiles and opens the door, I watch him as he gets down from the car, closing it in the process. My eyes remain fixed on him as he stops in front of me and pulls me close to him. I rest my head in the crook of his neck as he breathes softly against me.

’’I really want to be better. I am trying here.’’ The pain is etched in his voice.

He is beating himself up for things we can’t control. Right now, we have to focus on tomorrow. We have enough people to fight Cassius and his army. We will not lose the fight this time. ’’You are doing great already. Stop overthinking,’’ my arms go around his waist as he presses into me.

’’You’re so calm. I don’t even know how you do it.’’

I pull back midway, my eyes on his beautiful face ’’When I see your face. I forget about all my problems. Nothing else matters but you. I only want to be good for you. That is what keeps me going.’’

I’ve never had any issues with controlling my temper. I’ve usually been a chill live in the moment kind of guy but Beau is different. There is a fire in him. One that is stronger than anything I have ever seen. He doesn’t know how amazing he is and that is why he is beating himself up.
