Chapter 97: The vicious lady can never change

The music continued to play smoothly as if nothing had happened, but Abrielle’s palms were sweating with her heart thudding in her ribcage, which didn’t skip Cedric’s attention. She was scared and she should be. Her head was bowed again as she didn’t think she could hold his gaze.

"Why are you stunned or annoyed to dance with your husband after how far we have gone?" His question was laced with sarcasm; she didn’t understand where it was coming from.

Cedric had swapped dance partners with her. She felt his gaze on the back of her head, but she dared not glance back at him. Her face pressed against his chest with his thick sandalwood and vanilla mixed scent. It was heavenly not that she would admit it.

"One minute it’s Alfonso and the next Lucian. I really can’t take my eyes off you for long." His voice, with a husky tone, drawled, making her swallow hard.

Abrielle wanted to ask at first why did he care if she was dancing with his brothers when he had his love interest but those were dangerous uncharted waters she dared not tread on.

It wasn’t her fault she was the villainess and her actions were meant to make him hate her. Okay, some of her actions, except the part she wanted to hate him, which was also the plot’s fault.

"You really have nothing to say," Cedric added. Since she didn’t say anything and was just quiet, it felt like she was reluctant to have him dance with her.

"What do you want me to say exactly?" She asked smoothly, her voice barely a whisper, and despite the loud music, he didn’t miss it. Why would he? Cedric’s eyes trailed over to Callista and Lucian, who was dancing. He had an urge that he should not be dancing with Abrielle but Callista but this was truly absurd.

Even if he admitted, his marriage was not ideal, but why would he dance with a random priestess over his wife? He had a feeling that she might be upset that he danced with Callista but he did it because of her.

"Nothing, my head is in the clouds." He replied, Abrielle finally raised her head to his face but his gaze was away on Callista. "I am sorry that my jealousy took the best of me, and I ruined Callista’s dress while making a fuss." She apologized; it felt like the right thing.

Cedric’s brows furrowed, "What? I don’t understand why you are jealous of her. She is just a priestess, and you are a princess with a far seductive body while she is more on the cute side, I guess." Cedric muttered out his thoughts, his gaze till trailing to Callista.

The music finally ended then both parties bowed to each other before leaving the dance floor. Cedric could not help but wonder why she didn’t ask his reason for dancing with Callista or feel mad in the slightest when he could not stand her smiling carelessly with Lucian.

Abrielle didn’t take the initiative to hold Cedric’s arm because she knew Cedric would not want that. The few minutes he danced with her must have been the longest ever.

Cedric left to get a glass of wine while Abrielle’s eyes were on Callista, who was now talking to Lucian, whose attention was darting around the room. She took a deep breath and then started walking in their direction.

They did look like the perfect couple she envisioned. She might have been harsh on the female lead at times but it didn’t mean she didn’t like Callista. Honestly, there were days she wished she was Callista who had Lucian.

Callista was inspired based on her unrequited love for her crush, Lucian. The only difference was that Callista was brave enough to go for the love she believed in despite the odds while all she could do was watch Lucian from a distance and daydream about him.

"It’s a pleasant evening isn’t it." Abrielle chirped into their conversation, drawing Lucian’s strayed attention to Abrielle. Callista’s gaze flickered, seeing Abrielle at their side, and her hold on Lucian’s arm tightened.

"Your Highness," she said, sounding intimidated and scared like Abrielle had said something to bully her. Which made Abrielle confused. She was even yet to apologize for what she didn’t even do and she was about to be labelled the bad guy again.

"You look amazing..." Abrielle didn’t freak out and wanted to continue with her apology to clear her image but Callista beat her to it. "I am sorry I accidentally wore the same dress as the princess. I didn’t mean to offend you in any way." Callista quickly said, making it seem like Abrielle was about to confront her about the dress.

Onlookers’ attention was now drawn to them, which made Abrielle a bit nervous about what was happening. "That’s not what I mean, I just wanted..." Callista broke into tears and then quickly got on her knees, drawing everyone’s attention to them. She was shaking; was Abrielle scary?

"I am sorry if I have offended the princess in any way. If I had known that you were going to wear the same outfit I would not have selected it. My stylist is innocent. I am the one who offended you, and I deserve whatever punishment you deem fit."

Abrielle stepped back, her eyes darting around. Even the king had a condescending look. Her reputation was completely ruined, and all she wanted was to fix things, not make it worse. Callista was crying on the ground, and Lucian, as the male lead, was obliged to help her.

"I didn’t mean it in that way," she tried to defend herself but Lucian cut her off sharply. "Please, it’s enough. She had already apologized." He said, and that broke Abrielle. Everyone’s gaze was exactly the same.

She looked around, searching for one person who didn’t see her as the villainess but who was she joking with? Cedric just stood there frozen. Why was Alfonso giving her the I told you so look?

She took a deep breath and then ran out of the hall. No one stopped her because she wasn’t needed here in the first place.
