Chapter 80: Obstruction at the town gates
What was the first rule of treating someone who was a threat? Don’t have any form of fondness for that person. Although Cedric broke that rule from the start because he never considered her a threat..
She was a way to pass the time and have fun. Abrielle, on the other hand, always had her guard up; she knew what she was meant to feel, and it was never to like or fall in love with him in any way before she found herself in a trap with no escape.
It was that simple; she knew having a slight fondness for him might mean death. He was bound to fall in love with the female lead the same way the people who lost their lives in Danbury were bound to die. That was fate which she wanted to fight against but her dumb heart didn’t seem to understand.
She was falling for his gentle side, which was never shown in the book. The nice things people around him said which she shouldn’t be doing.
She sneaked a glance at his side profile; his gaze was focused on the fleeting images of the town, and he was equally lost in thoughts.
At the town gates, their carriage slowed down, making Abrielle puzzled about what was the issue.
A knight came to knock on Cedric’s window. "Your Highness, something demands your attention. It is Prince Alfonso." The knight explained. Cedric released a sharp breath; Alfonso was one of his least-liked step-siblings. ’ What does that bastard want now?’ he clicked his tongue.
"I will be back," he informed her, then got off. Abrielle released a long breath after he was gone. She could breathe easily now.
She had another task on hand, which was to get rid of any slight fondness she had for Cedric. That aside, what did Alfonso want? She wondered. She tried looking through her window, trying to figure out what was happening, but all she saw was a horse that surrounded the carriage.
Abrielle reached out to open the door, "The prince instructed that you stay in the carriage Princess Abrielle." A knight instructed her, who was none other than Elias. Deflated, she had no choice but to wait for Cedric.
Cedric walked ahead of his procession and understood the problem. Alfonso was blocking the way. He felt a headache coming. Seeing the man with auburn hair and annoying blue eyes just like his mother.
Yesterday while he was taking care of the shadow claw guide, he found an interesting piece of information. It turned out the idiots that attempted to assassinate him on arriving at the winter castle were indeed sent by Alfonso’s mother royal consort Karissa.
She had contracted the shadow claw guide to assassinate but they failed miserably. After her first plan, she decided to send her son instead; Alfonso was not originally meant to attend the winter hunt, but as soon as they had a hint he might be there, Alfonso showed up.
Although there was no link between the sorcerers’ attack and Karissa, it didn’t cancel out all suspicion. "What is the meaning of this?" Cedric asked with clear eyes. Alfonso approached him in the thick snow.
"You don’t have to look at me like you want me to drop dead, big brother." Alfonso chimed, the way he called Cedric big brother made his skin crawl. Alfonso was a year older than Abrielle at the age of 21, which was two years younger than Cedric, the King’s eldest son.
"Will you do that if I ask it of you?" Cedric asked him with a chilling smile that made Alfonso shudder.
"That’s a bad joke. I don’t mean any harm. I was just waiting for my brother at the gate so that we could head to the capital together." Alfonso expressed his intentions to join their procession. Cedric felt like laughing; he still hadn’t forgotten the fact Alfonso attempted to force himself on Abrielle.
She was covered with his smell that day and he was certain Abrielle didn’t accept his advances with the way she ran off. At least his vicious wife has a sense of loyalty.
"And if I refuse?" Cedric asked, he could already guess Alfonso might have offended someone or he was plotting something.
"Come on, it would be fun if we travel together." Alfonso chimed, and the cold wind blew between them; Cedric knew it would be fun. If it was just him, he would have accepted, but he had a duty of safely getting the Vesper duchy daughter to the capital.
He couldn’t take any risk. "I refuse; you have a minute to clear the road," Cedric said, turning his back to Alfonso. He signalled his men to get rid of the envoy.
Alfonso ran after Cedric. "You can’t leave me here, okay I will come clean. I will own you one." Alfonso said making Cedric to stop
"I am not interested; my men can kill every other person in your envoy aside from you, so don’t let my patience run out." Cedric still turned him down.
"My carriage was sabotaged, and if I wait for it to get fixed, it will take very long. I was hoping to join you." Alfonso explained leaving out the fact it was done by someone’s husband he was having an affair with. It was dangerous to mingle With Noble’s wife, but he still went ahead because it was the best way to gather information.
One of the reasons he wanted to have Abrielle was that not only did she have this tender, innocent look, but she could also be of good help to him. A potential weakness of Cedric.
Cedric’s brows furrowed; if he didn’t help, the king might make a big issue out of this. He beckoned on a knight to come.
"Do we have any free carriage?" He inquired. The knights explained their situation to him. "I don’t have any free carriage; you can only join on a horseback. That is the best I can do. Your envoy will be a liability to me." Cedric suggested that although there was more than enough space in the main carriage, the last thing he wanted was for his wife to be close to this playboy.
Alfonso clenched his fist; travelling on horseback the entire journey was pure torture. Unlike Cedric’s large envoy, since he was returning with his newly wedded wife, Alfonso’s envoy was small, with just two carriages. The main one was sabotaged while the other was heavily loaded, and the few maids he carried were also there. He couldn’t stay there because it stinks.
