The Villianess story: A 100 ways to kill your husband -
Chapter 75: Cassandra Desper
Chapter 75: Cassandra Desper
The carriage ran through the busy night streets of Swamp Creek. The ride was a bit bumpy, but that was the least of the princess’s problems. Evelyn bowed like a knight to introduce herself.
She was not a knight in the perfect sense but an assassin. What was he thinking? Was he suspicious of her from the start? Abrielle wondered, her hand gripping her silk dress to control her nervousness.
Not only did he assign an assassin to keep an eye on her but the second strongest person among his elite squad. Cedric’s hand-picked and trained men were given numbers according to their strength, with Elias being number one.
It was a secret unit hidden away from the King’s eye. What left Abrielle devastated was the fact Evelyn was shadow 2 seconds in strength to Elias and probably Cedric’s strongest assassin.
It meant either of two things, one, Cedric cared about her safety and thought highly of her that he spared his second best to look after her or the second reason.
Cedric was cautious and didn’t want to take any risk in the worst scenario. He had to get rid of her immediately. This never happened in the novel, as Cedric paid little to no attention to Abrielle, and that was what she was hoping for this time around, too.
" What is your actual name?" Abrielle requests to check the level of loyalty. Evelyn wasn’t her real name; if she was solely loyal to Cedric, she would refuse to reveal that information to her.
Evelyn’s eyes squinted suspiciously for a second, hesitant evidence on her face. Abrielle scoffed inwards, concluding it was the later option. Evelyn was Cedric’s blade ready to cut off her head at any second he gave the signal.
Evelyn’s mouth parted and she said with hesitance. "I prefer you refer to me as Evelyn. It’s the name his highness gave me, but if it fits the princess to call me another name, you can call me Cassandra Desper." Evelyn revealed.
Abrielle’s jaws almost dropped; she was a noble. "You are from noble blood," Abrielle gasped. Evelyn’s eyes had a sneer when she heard Abrielle. The Desper family was one of the popular nobles in the capital; it was uncanny an offspring of such blood is now a maid and assassin.
"I am not worthy of that title as my mother was a maid. Unfortunately, she died at my birth, and all I know is being a Desper during my early years before the lady of the house sold me at the age of 9. Luckily, his Highness rescued me from my former master years later." Abrielle was fascinated by her backstory, a bastard half-bred daughter sold into slavery.
"So you were no different from the little girl I wanted to buy just younger." Abrielle’s eyes dulled at her fate, remembering the girl with a broken gaze. Evelyn went quiet for a bit before continuing.
"At least our fate is a bit better than the other girls meant to be sold as maids. Since we were intended to be sold as objects to satisfy the sick fantasies of men who preferred we remain pure, we were not violated like the other girls at the grooming house, unlike the other girls." Evelyn explained.
Abrielle understood what she meant; grooming homes were secret locations where girls to be sold into sex trafficking were taken to be taught home to please men. The amount of abuse the girls would have to endure physically and psychologically was beyond description.
Abrielle’s hand reached out to cover her mouth, it explained why Evelyn was very strict. They were values already embedded into her. "Sorry," Abrielle apologized to a background character she had no idea of in the past.
"It is fine; the bastard that violated me is already dead , thanks to the prince. What I went through in those grooming houses and in that bastard’s hands made me into the person I am today." Evelyn replied; from her voice, she held Cedric in high regard.
Abrielle knew Cedric’s elite squad were loyal to him because of the feeling of debt he owed them, but she never knew it ran this deep. She nodded as her heart fretted.
Knowing that the devil that torments her has a good side made her confused. She didn’t need to know this side of him. If not, her resolve would be weakened. She needed to get rid of Cedric one way or the other; it was the only way she could survive.
The horse came to a stop in front of the hotel, "we are here," Evelyn announced, then helped Abrielle get down from the carriage.
"Do you want me to instruct the hotel to prepare a bath, or do you want to go straight to bed?" Evelyn asked her as they made their way to the room. On their way into a dark corner, her eyes spotted Alfonso in a compromising position with the count’s daughter.
He saw Abrielle and then smiled in her direction before pulling the count daughter into his bedroom. Abrielle’s face scrunched up in disgust as she stormed away. ’ I hope he catches a Venereal disease before his death.’ she cussed Alfonso in her mind. She was more disgusted at the fact he tried to throw his advances at her.
Yes, she was dumb, but not so dumb to fall for him. The door was shut behind her, and she walked up to the bed where she collapsed, burying her face in a pillow. Tonight was a bit adventurous, but she didn’t want to experience that kind of dangerous adventure.
"I will get the water ready," Evelyn announced then left the room. A couple of minutes later, the tub was filled, and she was ready to take her bath.
The water smelled like rose and cinnamon, a wonderful combo of flowers and spice. Abrielle slowly dipped herself inside to enjoy the feeling.
Evelyn helped her wash her hair while she just enjoyed the water. "I am done, my lady. Is there anything else that requires my assistance?" Evelyn asked her diligently.
Abrielle shook her head, "No, I am fine; I will just stay in the warm water a bit. I will call you if I need you." Abrielle’s voice came out as a purr as she half buried her face in the soapy water.
"Everything is already on the table, don’t hesitate to call for my help."Evelyn bowed and then left the room, although Abrielle was sure she was just at the door. A long sigh left her lips. She didn’t want to think of anything aside from enjoying her bath.
Time seemed to have gone by; Abrielle’s eyes slowly opened when she felt someone lift her from the bathtub. The first thing she saw was his side profile. He didn’t have a mask on.
