Chapter 276: What must be done

Eleanor was lost for words and hope upon hearing Astrid’s desperate cry to protect her daughter. It was true Diana was not a Silverheart. Astrid had done something rather stupid as retaliation after her marriage to Eris.

She didn’t love the general and still doesn’t till now. Her heart was cold due to her foolish obsession as some would call it. After her wedding night with Eris, they had consummated the marriage. Eris was called to war; it was an emergency summon as the kingdom borders were being compromised, leaving his wife, who didn’t want anything to do with him.

Astrid, during her lonely night, drank herself into a stupor every night and visited special brothels that rendered services to noble ladies. This continued until the grieving princess found entertainment with beautiful men who reminded her of her obsession. When she found out she was late.

She went to her mother to confess and to cover up everything, Eleanor pulled some strings and got Eris back from war. The honest truth was that Astrid didn’t even know the father of her daughter, and Eris had been in doubt, too, since the girl didn’t possess any features of the Silverheart.

Eleanor broke the hug and then held Astrid’s hand, "relax, it isn’t the end of the world ", she said softly. She didn’t mention something to Astrid she rather not

"Eris won’t take it. I know he hates me." The princess cried, overlooking all the ways her husband had tried to cover her shame even until now. Their marriage was not one of love but Eris eventually found peace with it despite the fact his wife never opened her heart to him.

His only solace was Diana, who he loved dearly, but his doubt was always at the corner of his heart. Astrid didn’t let him touch her after she gave birth to Diana, only on rare occasions, and unlike the royal family, the Silverheart family didn’t have mandatory nights.

"What happened was truly unfortunate, dear", Eleanor said, and Astrid went silent. Her tears dried out.

"Astrid," she called softly, making her daughter stare at her. Her grey eyes were wary. Astrid didn’t say a thing; she bit her lower lip, trying her best to avoid eye contact.

"Is there something you are not telling me? What truly happened that night?" Eleanor asked with a firm voice.

"I don’t remember much. I think I was set up, mother. There is no way I will do something stupid, not after what happened concerning Diana," Astrid admitted. The room went silent, and Eleanor was thrown into deep thoughts.

"Who did it?" The queen demanded with no room left for argument. "I don’t know. All I remember was enjoying the party, then morning came," she answered. Eleanor narrowed her eyes at Astrid.

.

"Cedric did it, didn’t he," Eleanor said on a final note. Astrid shuddered to hear Eleanor’s accusations. "Cedric had nothing to do with it, Mother. He is innocent ." Astrid defended him. The more she refused to admit it the more enraged Eleanor was.

Slap! The sound of skin striking against each other echoed in the room. Astrid grabbed her cheeks, her eyes wide as she stared at Eleanor in disbelief. This was the third time her mother had ever slapped her. The first was when she admitted her love for Cedric, and the second was when she got pregnant.

"Mother, why?" She muttered stepping away while grabbing her cheeks.

Eleanor clenched her hands to her side. Cedric, Cedric, Cedric. Everything was about that vixen son that came into her life. The bastard she failed to get rid of. Her daughter was obsessed with her half-brother, and Cedric’s existence threatened her son’s life.

"I should be the one asking you that question. Why are you still defending him? Why are you doing this to yourself, Astrid? I gave you the perfect life but you are destroying it with your own hands." Eleanor drawled her grey eyes were filled with anger that made Astrid frightened, unable to stand the Queen’s anger.

"Cedric didn’t do anything wrong. I was the one who loved him when I should not. I am the reason he is scarred and was sent to war early. It’s my fault he is the demon he is. I ruined his life, mother." Astrid cried tears streaming down her cheeks. Eleanor was so aggravated that she also screamed.

She laughed, this was hilarious. "Glad you know your foolishness, but why are you still defending him? He ruined your life, and yet you dare defend him." The queen scoffed. She could not believe she was having this conversation now of all time. Astrid’s life was in danger and she was still defending Cedric.

Astrid clutched her dress bowing her head. Her voice was steady and barely above a whisper. "None of this would have happened if you didn’t force us apart." Astrid accused her mother. Eleanor was dumbfounded.

"What is wrong with you? He is your half brother!!" Her hand flew up in the air. Exasperated, what was she going to do with Astrid?

"It could have still worked, Mother; cousins can be together under special circumstances. Why can’t I have Cedric? You know I loved him but you did everything possible to keep him away. Now I have to watch him get married to that vixen, which I can’t allow. I’d rather die." As soon as Astrid said those abdominal words she was silenced with another slap. Eleanor might lose her mind soon.

"I did all those because I love you, but my love isn’t enough, Astrid. You disappoint me the more you speak of him." Eleanor barked, silencing Astrid. Her chest was rising due to anger. The queen closed her eyes and drew in a breath to calm herself.

"I can see this house arrest hasn’t made you realize your flaws yet. Enjoy your stay here while I get rid of Cedric. This time, I am not holding back." Eleanor scoffed then turned around to leave the room. Astrid didn’t stop her

"You can’t hurt him, mother. You have failed several times already. Even though I had failed, I had tried to get him to take me, but even drugs were not enough. I guess he did what he did as revenge." Astrid admitted. Eleanor’s head snapped back in disbelief. Her face pale

"You tried to coerce Cedric to your bed." Astrid only grinned at her.

*****

Eleanor’s hand turned into a fist as she watched Karissa leave the booth. It was about time she got rid of that bastard for good but he was too difficult to end. It was fine, Abrielle would have to go down. Eleanor glanced at Rebecca in the Nightshade booth."Sorry, old friend, this will have to do."
