Chapter 207: A misunderstanding

The doors swung open, Abrielle heard them as they opened but she didn’t bother turning towards the castle and focused on her tea while reading a book. It was a novel she unexpectedly stumbled upon in the library and has been endorsed in it for days now.

She heard footsteps rushing towards her and was a bit distracted, wondering if there was urgent news from the castle. Who knows, maybe the goddess has mercy after seeing her suffering and decides to give her a break by letting Cedric unexpectedly die during his trip.

Cedric, too long, strides down the pathway lined with plants. The snow had barely completely melted away, but the plants were now lush and soon would be covered with blooming flowers.

The garden smelled like wet soil and herbs. His jaw was clenched; he had suppressed his rage and tirelessly travelled on horseback for a week, only resting when the horses were about to collapse from exhaustion and to take light meals.

That was how he was able to cut his journey to just a week; after Cedric received Evelyn’s letter, he could not sit out anymore and finished all his work that was meant to take an extra week in two days and left Vesper at dusk.

He boarded the first boat out before the royal ship was ready, not caring it was below his status, and the rest of the journey was done on horseback. 4 days on the water and barely 3 on land.

Cedric stopped his anger quickly disappearing when he saw her frail back. What has happened? That was the first question he asked himself. Seeing how weak she was looking he forgot all his grievances and was just deeply concerned about her health.

Elias has successfully caught up with the prince. He was nervous and hoping to stop the fight; instead, he was welcomed with an unexpected sight. Cedric blankly watched Abrielle’s back as she took her tea.

To be honest, a part of Cedric knew the reason he rushed his trip back was because of her health. He was disturbed hearing how Alfonso was growing on her due to her frail health. He wasn’t expecting her to look this weak, worse, even after the miscarriage.

He drew a deep breath and slowly approached her, Abrielle sighed at the footsteps closing in. What did she think? There was no way Cedric might have died during his trip; it must be Alfonso. He probably came to check her condition.

"It is quite early, Alfonso. Don’t you have something better to do than to bother me?" She commented, but there wasn’t any reply from Alfonso, who was rather talkative.

The footsteps got close, and Abrielle was honestly too tired to turn around. Maybe the youngest prince was now playing games.

She felt his presence behind her but there was something weird about the oddly familiar presence. Her brows pulled together. Fortunately, her questions were answered early when she heard his voice.

One she hasn’t heard for weeks. Over a month now, her heart skipped a beat. "I guess the rumours about Alfonso giving you regular visits are true." He mentioned.

Abrielle’s head whipped behind her. It wasn’t possible, but he was truly standing behind her. How did he get back so early? "Cedric," she muttered in disbelief. Cedric pulled off the glove on his left hand.

He walked slower, squatting before her, his palm cupping her cheeks. She felt the familiar warmth and faint sparks from his touch. There was a fleeting urge to hug him but she held herself back.

"Yes, I am back in the flesh. Don’t look too shocked I came back so early." He chimed. Their gaze met; he was trying to read those clear blue eyes that were hard to understand.

Abrielle was too stunned to reply; she had complex emotions. Spring was here, and he was back. He most likely rushed back home because he was desperately missing Callista.

"You don’t seem excited to see me." He mentioned taking a step back. She missed his warm touch immediately. He let go, something she would never admit to.

"Of course, I am glad you are back. I am just surprised and too tired to jump around." She replied. Cedric scoffed at her words. She honestly didn’t like his reaction.

"What happened to you? You have gotten very frail." He asked, he could still feel how weak she was against his palm on his ungloved hand.

"I got into an accident but I paid back the favour." She answered; he was puzzled by her words, unable to understand her.

"What favour?" Cedric asked, genuinely confused. He had a weak smile on his face; when it came to her, he was genuinely hopeless. After all the rumours and everything he could not stay mad at her.

He was still angry but the sight of her quelled down the anger. What was he thinking, being mad at someone who attempted to assassinate him multiple times, and yet he could not hate her?

"I saved Callista during an assassination attempt. It is to return the favour of how you helped me during the miscarriage instead of being by her side." Abrielle explained, she genuinely hoped this would settle their grievance, unknown to her; the words she said kind of made things worse.

"I didn’t do you a favour by assisting during the loss of our child. It was my duty."

Abrielle smiled at his words, after passing the initial surprise of his unexpected arrival, she was reminded of her grievances towards him.

"I am glad you know your duty, Cedric, because tell which married man travels for so long without sending a single letter back. Not that I cared but it was ruining my reputation about how my husband didn’t care about me in the least way. Actually, I prefer you go back to where you came from. I’d rather not see your face."

Talk about being left dumbfounded; what was she saying about not sending letters? "If this is a joke, better stop it; I am still mad at the fact you didn’t reply to my letters, not to mention the rumours."
