Chapter 202: A fight for survival
The last person she expected to see by her bedside was Alfonso. All the times she got injured, he was by her side, but he wasn’t here this time around.
She wondered what used to go through Cedric’s mind at those times when he waited. Was he anxious or did it out of duty? She wasn’t going to lie but she indeed wished he had sent her a letter even if it was a simple: I have arrived safely
"What am I thinking Abrielle?" She sighed, puzzling Alfonso, who was seated by her bedside. She wondered if he stayed there the entire night.
"Pardon, what was that?" Alfonso asked, surprised by her unexpected words. "It’s nothing." Abrielle groaned, struggling to sit up. Her head was still in the clouds.
A blue screen was in front of her,
THE HOST HAD INTERFERED WITH A MAJOR EVENT.
PENALTY: REVERSE FATE. THE HOST WAS POISONED INSTEAD OF THE FEMALE LEAD WITH AN EXTRA CASUALTY
"Was I poisoned?" She asked Alfonso, trying to confirm the system notification. She was more than certain the system just wanted her dead.
Alfonso hissed, massaging his brows. His body aches due to the position he slept in the entire night. He had no idea when he fell asleep waiting by her side.
He didn’t care what the others could say but he was sure of one thing. It was dangerous to move Abrielle in her unconscious state back to the seaside castle and she was not safe in the palace either.
They had no idea who sent the assassins or why Bernice and Callista were involved; everything was a mess. "Apparently you were but we have no idea how. The poison was of a different nature to what was administered to Bernice." He explained.
Abrielle’s lips formed an O, understanding the situation. "I guess I am still in the palace and it has been just a day Since you are still wearing the same old clothes," Abrielle concluded from her observation.
"The ball was last night. I am glad you are fine. Fortunately, the other ladies are also fine; Bernice was even in a better state than you when she was examined while Callista was simply knocked out. Weirdly, it felt like you were the target, but I don’t understand how." Alfonso mentioned.
Abrielle knew that wasn’t the case, Callista was the target. The plot didn’t change but the reason behind it did. There was a new development: whenever she tried to influence the story without the system’s permission, there was going to be a back clash; how interesting that was.
"I am tired but I want to go back home." Abrielle requested. Alfonso nodded, "the physician said you are free to move once conscious. I will inform your knight and maids." He said getting on his feet.
He turned to head for the door. His feet stopped moving when he heard her speak. "Did you spend the night here?" She asked him. He glanced over his shoulders to meet her blue eyes
"I could not leave you alone; sorry if it will disturb you in any way, but our family is complicated. There were a lot of people that wanted to use last night to their advantage." Alfonso answered. It was a good argument but why did it feel like it was an excuse for him to stay by her side to offer a sense of protection
Abrielle nodded and Alfonso stepped out of the room. Elias was waiting at the door. "Where is the maid?" He asked. Elias, despite not liking the look of this, was bound to answer. "She went to the castle to get the princess a change of clothes," Elias answered.
"She is up now; you can leave now. At least, no one will be crazy enough to attack you in broad daylight," Alfonso informed Elias and then walked away. He had to get to his castle as adult male heirs were not allowed to live in the castle once they were adults.
He was still within the physician’s quarters when he walked into Karissa, who wasn’t looking happy. Her eyes were glaring at Alfonso, "are you still going to pretend it is all to get her to trust you?" Karissa sneered at Alfonso.
He groaned honestly, too exhausted for any drama. Last night was an emotional rollercoaster for him. "Please not now, Mother. I need to rest." He dismissed Karissa, walking past her.
The royal concubine felt her heart squeeze at her son’s condition. This could not be happening. Never in her wildest dream did she imagine Alfonso Falling in love with one of his targets, this one being his half-brother’s wife.
"Please don’t tell me.." her words got stuck in her throat, too scared to utter the words before they became a manifestation. Alfonso stood watching his mother, he knew how to read women and understood her thoughts
"I hope you are not thinking about anything stupid like getting rid of Abrielle, mother." He said, her heart skipped a beat. He saw through her. Alfonso walked towards his mother stopping in front of her.
"Never forget, unlike Cedric, Abrielle has both the temple and the Nightshade family behind her. She isn’t someone to make your enemy. Trust me you don’t have to be scared. This is all part of the plan to make her trust me." He reached out for his mother’s face, rubbing her cheeks.
"I can’t afford anything happening to you Alfonso. You are my only child, even if you don’t get the throne, if the battle gets too bloody, let’s run back to my home kingdom." She pleaded; if she lost Alfonso, everything she endured in the harem all these years would be for nothing. He was her everything.
She was ready to do anything including give her life for him. Alfonso pulled his mother into a hug. She broke down in his arms, leaning against his broad chest, and started crying.
"I promise I won’t die. If it gets too hard we will run with our lives at dusk." He swore to comfort his mother. He didn’t want the throne just for power but his survival relied on it. He knew neither of his brothers would let a threat lurk around if they had the throne. In the end, neither would he.
There has never been a peaceful succession in the history of Darconia. ’ Father please don’t die soon.’ Alfonso secretly prayed. He needed to get himself together.
