Chapter 168: The seed of jealousy
Just as Abrielle had predicted, they did get caught up in the storm. "Do you, by chance, know the members of the royal family that went missing?" Cedric enquired from Sebastian.
"I am not sure about the rest, but I am certain about Princess Ophelia," Sebastian answered then turned around towards the temple. "We should head inside if my memory serves me right. Abrielle is highly sensitive to cold." Sebastian added beckoning them to follow him inside.
A light breeze blew across causing Abrielle to shiver, her breath getting heavy. The air up here was pretty thin to breathe, being several altitudes above the ground.
"I am glad you are doing well Sebastian. I always wanted to visit for a long time, but mother won’t let me because of the distance, saying I wasn’t built for long travel." Abrielle started making small talk with Sebastian. She didn’t know exactly where he was leading them, but they were no longer outside.
"I understand; I should have visited, but the temple is always busy, combined with the responsibility of being the head priest." Sebastian came across a group of noble ladies who seemed to be coming back from a prayer. They exchanged greetings shortly with the priest and the royal couple.
"It must be hard, but then again how are you going to inherit the duchy now you have become a head priest." She asked Sebastian; Abrielle was curious about his thoughts. The original novel timeline never got to the point of Sebastian inheriting the title because her entire family was killed for treason...
A faction rose in the temple that formed an alliance with Lucian, which usurped power from the Nightshade family for being Cedric’s supporter. Abrielle was currently too overwhelmed with avoiding her death to think about stopping her family’s extermination.
"I plan on moving back to Vesper soon. Since you are married to the prince, I will certainly be the next duke, but yet I feel a bit nervous."
"So you plan on retiring as a priest," she asked because the family head, which is the Duke of Vesper, can’t be a priest at the same time. "Unfortunately I have to. The ceremony will start at dusk. I advise you to take some rest, and before I forget, I would love to have a word with you privately." He said implying to Abrielle. A young servant was already waiting to take Cedric and Abrielle to their temporary living quarters.
They arrived at the room, it was not as luxurious as what they were used to but it was still considered a luxury for most. The young servant excused himself as soon as they arrived.
The room was warm so Abrielle could finally take off her coat. She walked towards the fireplace to take a seat there while Cedric stood at the door. Since talking about her miscarriage, they haven’t had any chance to converse, not that Abrielle was interested in talking.
She knew for a fact that she and Cedric were happy over the baby’s death. "You should rest, I will be out for a while." He finally mentioned, Abrielle didn’t glance over she knew he would not be able to stay still with the fact Callista was in the forest which wasn’t a safe place either
"Okay, I will head to the main temple later to see Sebastian before the ceremony." She answered. She didn’t even bother to ask where he was going; it seemed like she was the least concerned.
"Are you not curious where your husband is going?" Cedric asked, which was a bit unexpected. Abrielle’s head snapped in his direction, her eyes narrowing at him. Where was that coming from?
"I don’t have a reason to worry. I know you are worried about the recent development. Just stay safe." She replied diplomatically, truly sounding unbothered.
Cedric scoffed at her, then left the room slamming the door behind him. Abrielle clicked her tongue at his behaviour. What was wrong with him? She wondered then her eyes dulled. He was going to find Callista.
"Why do I care?" She sneered at herself trying to ignore the bitter feeling she felt. Her emotions were all over the place, and although she had been trying to hide it, the miscarriage still bothered her. A life was eliminated from her body without her permission, and the so-called father could not care less.
Cedric didn’t hesitate to leave his wife who just had a miscarriage. He might use the excuse that it was his duty, but who was he kidding? This was another painful reminder that the plot had all control. The baby was never meant to exist, but for a moment, Abrielle imagined what adventure it would have been if she managed to escape with the baby.
Outside the room, Cedric stood at the door for a while, trying to hear if anything was off inside, but she seemed rather calm. Elias was already waiting by his side waiting for instructions. "Watch over Abrielle while I am gone." He instructed Elias.
"Why are you bothered about Lucian when it would do us more good if he dies or is the priestess your concern?" Elias spoke before realizing what he was saying. Cedric’s face twisted hearing Elias’s words, which scared the knight.
Elias knew he should have shut his mouth. To his shock, Cedric didn’t lash out. "I need to find Ophelia. Nothing can happen to her or the deal with Galvia will fall out." Cedric explained it made sense but Cedric had an uncertain feeling.
He didn’t want to leave, but something kept on urging him to leave. No, it wasn’t the voices, but he felt he had to go search for them. The faster they found the others, the faster they could leave the mountain. This place was not good for Abrielle’s health.
"I will watch over the princess," Elias replied. Cedric glanced at the door before walking off. Was it strange that he felt Abrielle’s emotion like he knew she didn’t want him leaving, yet he could not stop himself? First, he had to meet Kaiden to understand what happened.
