Chapter 128: Lady of the household

Lucian smiled at Cedric before his gaze drew to Abrielle. "My gratitude was to Abrielle and not you. I had no idea you were your wife’s spoke man." He sneered at Cedric who didn’t look to be affected by Lucien’s comment.

" I appreciate the offer and will consider it." Abrielle chirped despite feeling the mood of the man beside her shift. Maybe with Lucian’s favour, she might escape Cedric’s blade, but she doubted it would be that simple.

"I am glad you did." Lucian chimed. The sound of glass shattering on the floor drew everyone to look at Callista who was completely embarrassed. The wine glass are was using had slipped from her fingers.

"I am very sorry my fingers slipped." She blurted while shaking. Lucian immediately got up from his seat to her side to move her from the shards while the maids came over to clean up the mess. "Are you alright?" Lucian asked, and she slowly nodded, glancing at Cedric.

He didn’t seem the least worried although his gaze was in her direction. "Try being careful; that cup is pretty expensive. That aside, you scared Abrielle. She isn’t used to shock." Cedric said coldly. Abrielle’s frown deepened. Why was he being cold to Callista today? Why was she being dragged into this matter?

"It’s okay; everyone has slippery hands," Abrielle mentioned, placing her free hand on Cedric’s without realizing it. Cedric stiffened by that single action. Finally knowing what she did, she tried to retract her hand but he quickly held her hands.

"Thank you for inviting us, I hope you won’t mind. I would like to take my leave now. I am not feeling so well. Please have a safe recovery, Your Highness." Callista quickly said then ran out of the room. Lucian gave Cedric a tired look before slightly bowing and leaving.

’ What just happened now?’ stunned Abrielle asked herself. Cedric got up from his seat the screeched against the marble flooring as he rose. "I will send them out, just finish your meal." He informed her; he leaned in about to place a peck on her forehead but changed his mind and tucked her hair behind her ears instead before leaving the room.

Just like that Abrielle was the only one left in the room having her meal. She had yet to ask Cedric about the budget allocation. The soft clicking sounds of her cutleries and crockeries echoed in the large dining room.

The doors of the study creaked open, drawing her attention to Cedric, who just stepped in. It has been over an hour since he left the dining room. Abrielle didn’t question him and quickly averted her eyes.

Cedric walked over to his main desk in the study to start going through some documents Lucas left for him to go through. He pulled off his mask placing it on the table before picking up his quill.

"Are you not worried someone might walk in and see your face?" Abrielle commented causing Cedric’s gaze to be drawn to her. "I thought you were ignoring me. So my face really catches your attention more than Lucian’s." Cedric sneered.

Where was that coming from? Abrielle’s mouth fell open. She clicked her tongue and went back to read the report she was going through. "Just forget I said anything." She sighed. She should have kept her mouth shut.

"You don’t have to worry about anyone seeing my face. Without my permission, they can’t come in, so my face is preserved solely for you." Cedric then answered, he made it seem like seeing his face was a privilege.

Since they were already talking, Abrielle thought it would be a good opportunity to bring up the allocation. "Cedric," she called softly drawing his attention to her. Those gold eyes were now staring solely at her. His gaze drew her breath from her lungs, she nervously bit her lips to gather her thoughts.

"I wanted to ask you something related to the castle finances." She started, Cedric’s face was still stoic as he listened keenly to what she had to say. "Is there a problem with the way things are being run here?" He asked as she quickly shook her head. The castle was well organized she just had a tiny problem.

"Not at all but I was wondering if I can be put in charge of my own budget. I asked Lucas and he said I should ask for your permission." Her grip on the quill subconsciously tightened. She waited for his next words with her palms getting sweaty.

Cedric smiled at her and then chuckled, his voice sounding magnetic in her ears. "Why are you asking for my permission?" he shot back a question that puzzled her. "I beg your pardon, what do you mean?"

"Abrielle did you forget that you are my wife?" Cedric asked her again, he was just going in circles. He released a sharp inhale seeing that she didn’t understand him. "You are the lady of the house, and if you are interested, you can take over the finances. It’s your duty. You just have to maybe ask for Lucas’s advice on what you don’t understand. Honestly, you don’t have to ask for my permission on everything, although I will indeed appreciate it if you inform me of what was happening. I trust your judgement."

Abrielle was taken aback by his reply; he was putting her in charge of the household. Was this some kind of trick? Why did trust her? "I had no idea," she honestly answered.

"It’s fine with time. You will be able to handle everything well, and our children will look up to you." Her eyes snapped at him. "Do you really plan on having children with me?" She blurted, she didn’t understand his words or actions. Cedric was becoming a bigger puzzle.

"Is there a reason why I can’t have children with my wife?" He asked her with a slight frown on his lips. "I thought you had no intentions of having children. After all, our marriage is a political marriage to get my family’s support. You don’t have to say things you don’t mean Cedric."

"I truly don’t understand you at times Abrielle. I mean what I said the main reason for any marriage is procreation. If we don’t have children, how else will your family be convinced that we are doing well in our marriage, or Do I really not satisfy your desires and cravings?" His question left him speechless; she would rather not answer him.
