Chapter 34: Class Division Exam [26]
ACT 1 : THE REAWAKENING
The sharp clang of metal echoed through the cavern as Aster’s group fought off the illusions swarming their path. The faint glow from their spell crystals lit up the damp dungeon walls as sweat clung to their brows. Aster led the charge, a calm fire in his eyes, while his teammates followed closely.
"Left! One more coming!" barked Ren, the swordsman of the group.
"On it!" replied Astoria, dashing forward with dual daggers, her blades flashing in the dim light as she carved through the illusion.
"This place feels strange," muttered Tolan, the shield bearer, his voice wary. "Too quiet."
"We’re moving well," Aster responded, his eyes scanning ahead. "Focus. One more token and we’re done."
Their steps were quick, practiced—too practiced.
Suddenly, a shadow shot from the side of the path.
"Incoming!" screamed Lysa, the mage, raising her staff to cast a barrier—but it was too late.
I struck without warning. My hood up, face hidden beneath enchanted cloth, I burst from the shadows like a wraith and slammed my elbow into Tolan’s side, knocking him into the wall. He let out a grunt, dazed.
Before anyone could react, I lunged again—blade raised, aiming directly for Aster.
They hadn’t seen this coming.
Outnumbered five to one. Yet I moved with confidence. I had already calculated every angle, every reaction. They were skilled, yes. But they lacked one thing: preparation for the unexpected.
"Who the hell—?" Ren shouted, slashing toward me.
I twisted my body, ducking low and letting his blade whistle above me. In one smooth motion, I pivoted, slicing across Lysa’s thigh. Not deep—but enough to stagger her.
Astoria leapt back, daggers spinning in hand. "He’s fast—don’t let him split us!"
Tolan tried to raise his shield, but I kicked it aside, making him stumble. His knees hit the stone, wind knocked from his lungs. I disarmed him with a twist of my wrist.
Chaos.
Their tight formation crumbled.
Faye tried to cast a spell—barrier magic—but I spun and cracked her staff with a sharp elbow. She screamed and fell backward, clutching her arm.
Only Aster remained upright, standing protectively in front of his team.
His blue eyes locked onto mine.
"You’re good," he muttered, his tone calm. "But you made a mistake coming alone."
He raised his blade, wind enchantment sparking across the steel. Magic flared in his veins.
In the next breath, we clashed.
Steel rang against steel. Sparks flew.
He was fast—faster than I had planned. He aimed for my pressure points, not to kill, but to disable. The strikes were precise.
I blocked one—barely. Parried the second. Dodged the third.
But the fourth landed.
His sword skimmed across my ribs. I hissed, retreating a step, blood soaking into the fabric of my cloak.
I retaliated with a feint and slashed upward, catching his shoulder.
Aster grunted.
We separated for a second, breathing hard.
"You’re not a student," he said coldly. "You’re an intruder."
"You think so?" I smirked behind my mask.
I rushed him again.
Our blades clashed. One. Two. Three strikes. He parried. I ducked. I kicked him in the stomach, sending him stumbling—but he twisted mid-fall, rolling back onto his feet.
"Astoria—on his flank!" he barked.
She obeyed immediately, sprinting in from my left. I turned just in time to block her first dagger—but not the second.
It pierced my shoulder.
"Tch—"
I threw her off me with brute force, ignoring the pain.
Ren was next, coming from the other side. He tackled me full-on, and we both rolled across the stone. I kneed him in the stomach and elbowed his chin. He went limp.
But by now, I was surrounded again.
"He’s slowing," Lysa said through clenched teeth, her bleeding leg wrapped in a quick bandage.
I went for her next, thinking to take her out before she cast again.
But I underestimated her.
She chanted swiftly, magic swirling in her palm.
"Glacia Tether!"
Ice surged beneath my feet, locking my legs to the floor.
Aster moved.
His wind-clad blade sliced down—forcing me to block with my bare arms. The force of it knocked me back.
My weapon slipped from my grasp.
Shit.
I dove to the side, rolled, and lunged at the closest person—Lysa.
I wrapped my arm around her neck, trying to gain leverage.
She reacted instantly, slamming her head backward into my nose.
Pain exploded. Blood spurted.
She twisted, then flipped me over her shoulder, pinning me to the ground.
I struggled, but Aster was already on me. His blade pressed against my chest.
"Who are you!?"
Before they could pull off my hood—
---
Far deeper in the dungeon, in a chamber bathed in red light, the traitor kneeled before a large stone altar. Her hood was down. Crimson eyes reflected the flickering runes around her.
Her hand trembled as she drew a blade across her palm and let the blood drip into the carved symbols.
Whispers filled the room.
The ancient runes came alive, glowing violently as they pulled the blood toward a coffin embedded in the stone.
Smoke poured from the cracks. A low rumble echoed in the depths.
She muttered the last lines of the forbidden chant. "From sleep eternal, by blood and bond, awaken, Progenitor of the Night."
With a sudden crack, the coffin burst open.
A pale figure rose slowly—eyes closed, long white hair spilling over its shoulders. Then his eyes opened—blood red, glowing with ancient hunger.
Varkhazel Noctis, the Vampire Progenitor, had returned.
A thick mist poured from his body, curling through the chamber and stretching outward, seeping into the tunnels.
It instantly enveloped the entire dungeon, stopping everyone in their tracks.
A sinister smell of blood was in the mist, mixed with a very faint red hue of mana, literally screaming everyone to run away.
The exam would never be the same, nor would the scenario which has deviated from the original.
Dorian was left astonished, as he retreated from there.
The dooming srorm was already here.
The vampire progenitor, Varkhazel, appeared out of the red mist, with his naked body and speaks up, which echoes through the cave.
"I am hungry..."
