The Veil of Darkness -
Chapter 76: The Sudden Storm
Chapter 76: The Sudden Storm
They resumed their journey after the short lunch break and continued to travel for the next couple of hours without any disturbance.
The only minor change that he noticed was the lack of conversation between her and Kenric, the man was almost ignoring even looking in her direction and at one point, his lack of attention towards her started bugging her brain.
Still, she didn’t try to talk to him as she was still pretty much aware that Damian won’t appreciate her trying to distract his brother and if something happened, she would possibly become the bad guy in his eyes.
Since the ride was comfortable, she ended up falling asleep, and when she finally woke up after a few hours had passed, the situation outside was no longer the same. They had stopped once again but this time it was not for taking a break.
Annalise watched from the carriage window as dark clouds started covering the sky. Just a couple of minutes ago, it was still bright and sunny, and now, the weather had taken a sudden turn.
"It doesn’t look like any normal rain, a storm seems to be coming." Damian’s voice was loud enough for her to hear and as she gazed at the dark clouds, she too could feel that there was going to be more than just normal rain.
"We must hurry and find a shelter," Kenric stated as his eyes ran through their surroundings as if to search for the right direction for a good shelter. She watched as his eyes became darker as he concentrated his powers and continued with his search.
Seconds turned into minutes, and the sky only got darker with each passing minute. A cold breeze had started blowing and a little bit of lightning could be seen on the farthest south corner of the sky.
"There, on our east. There’s a cave that can shelter us." Kenric’s voice pulled her attention back to him and she watched the other lords coming together to discuss things. Since she could not be of any help, she decided to stay silent and let them handle the situation.
They soon started heading in the direction Kenric pointed at and after around ten minutes or so, they finally found the cave which was huge enough not only to shelter the four of them but also the carriage and the horses.
She climbed down from the carriage and headed inside the cave along with Valerius while Kenric and Damian remained behind to take care of the carriage and the horses.
Since the outside world had turned dark, it only added to the darkness that was already present inside the cave, making it hard for her to see much of the inside even though she had enchanted eyesight.
She felt a hand coming to take hold of hers as Valerius pulled her closer to him, his protective instincts running wild as he kept her close to him as he took out a brightly lit moonstone that filled their surroundings with bright light.
They walked a little further into the ave before Valerius finally let go of her hand only to stretch his hand out a cast a spell around them that she concluded was a protection spell. He finally turned to face her and handed her the moonstone. "Wait here for us and I’ll return with the others in a couple of minutes. Alright?"
Annalise found herself nodding her head in understanding and watched as the man left her and headed back towards the entrance of the cave where the others were still busy taking care of the carriage and the horses.
She found a clean space next to a huge rock and settled down on the ground with her back resting against the rock. The moonstone sat on her palm and shone brightly, sending soft and barely noticeable tongues of energy down her palm to all over her fingers and wrist.
She watched as Valerius cast another protection spell to ward the entrance of the cave before he and Kenric grabbed several items from the carriage and their horses before they both made their way toward her. On the other hand, Damian left the cave and disappeared somewhere in the distance.
"He’s going to collect some firewood. Will be back soon." Valerius informed her when he noticed her eyes still staring at the cave’s entrance.
The two men hurriedly prepared makeshift beds on the ground near the rock where she was sitting before they started checking on the packed food that they had in their possession. Since it was already evening, it wasn’t too early to have their dinner.
Damian returned after a couple of minutes and by that time, the rain had also started pouring down. The man handed the firewood to his brothers before he used a quick spell to dry himself.
Kenric created a little bonfire and made her sit closer so that she could get some warmth from it. She watched as he used the fire to warm up the food and the milk before he handed them both to her and after giving her a soft smile, he went away to talk to Damian and Valerius who were standing near the cave’s entrance while talking about something in whispers.
Realizing that her husbands won’t be joining her for the meal like usual, she decided to enjoy the food on her own and then sleep as there was nothing else for her to do. The lords seemed to be acting sneaky all of a sudden and she had no idea what was going on with them. She just hoped it was nothing bad.

"Are you sure that it’s exactly what you felt?" Valerius asked again just to confirm. He didn’t want Damian to take any risks without being confirmed about his doubts.
"Trust me, I can sense its darkness. Give me a maximum of three hours and I’ll catch it." Damian seemed pretty confident as he replied.
"Fine. What do you want us to do?" Kenric asked as he followed Damian’s gaze that was pointed at Annalise who was busy with her food.
"I want you to keep her engaged with your powers so she won’t become a liability for me."
