Chapter 396: Epilogue: A Doting Mother
Elaine immediately turned to face Annalise and a warm smile spread on the young lady’s lips as she entangled her hand with her mother’s. Neither of them needed to voice out the name of the person Annalise was talking about.
"Look how cold he is, Mother. It is my welcome banquet and he doesn’t find it necessary to appear here even for a moment." Elaine quickly complained to Annalise, knowing fully well that if there was one person in the entire world who could control Esmeray then it was no one other than her dear mother.
Annalise smiled warmly at her daughter’s complaint before she provided the help that the young lady so desperately sought. "If you want your current situation with him to improve, you will need to make the first effort, Ela. You are fully aware of how careful he has always been when it comes to you, almost to the point that it has unconsciously created a wall between you guys and he’s hesitating to break past that wall. If you want your relationship to improve, you will need to bring down that wall. "
"But what if I ended up pushing him away from me in the process?" The insecurity was so clear in Elaine’s voice that it almost made Annalise’s heart ache for her little girl.
She tucked a loose curl behind her daughter’s ear before answering - "Don’t tell me that a millennia-old man is making you question yourself. You are your fathers’ daughter, taming a mate shouldn’t be a hard task for you."
"Are you trying to imply that fathers tamed you too?" Elaine was quick to tease which brought a huge smile on her lips and sparkle in her ocean blue eyes that she inherited from Annalise.
"Of course, not. Don’t think too highly of your fathers. After all, I was the one who tamed them back in the old good days." Annalise lied straight through her white sparkling teeth like it was no hard job for her.
"If you say so." Elaine wasn’t buying her mother’s lie as she had heard enough stories from her fathers about how they turned their really shy, conservative, silent, and secluded wife into her current bold, confident, funny, and social persona. Still, just to keep her mother happy, she pretended to believe her words.
"So... how far can I go?" Elaine asked and the hesitation in her words was more than enough to explain what she was talking about, causing Annalise to arch her eyebrows high as she turned to fully face her daughter.
"Mother..." Elaine protested at the judgement filled eyes of her mother that were currently locked on her.
Annalise let out a small sigh as she accepted a glass of wine from a pixie passing by. Being a mother was really not an easy job, there were too many things one needed to handle as a mother that they would otherwise ignore at all costs.
"As long as you don’t end up pregnant before getting married." She quickly pointed out rule number one.
"Mother! Of course, I will be careful about that." Elaine looked totally embarrassed even though her reply made Annalise once again arch her eyebrows high in surprise.
"And most important... don’t get me in trouble with your fathers. I can’t handle their overprotectiveness when it comes to you." Annalise again quickly reminded her daughter about the second most important rule. She sure was not looking forward to being caught in a situation between her daughter and husbands, even the thought of it sent chills running down her spine.
"I will be careful," Elaine promised quickly as she gulped down the entire content of the wine glass that Annalise just picked up for herself. "Thank you for the drink, Mother. I’m heading out now. Please keep your husbands busy tonight." And then the young lady went as far as adding a wink at the end before she hurriedly disappeared into the crowd gathered in the banquet hall.
"This child..." Annalise shook her head as she watched her daughter making her way out of the grand hall. But then she had to turn around when she felt Kenric getting closer to her.
"Where is Ela going? The banquet is still not over." Instead of angry, he sounded more worried as his gaze too followed Elaine even though she had already stepped out of the hall.
"She just arrived in the evening and has to immediately get ready and attend this never-ending banquet. The child is tired, just let her get some rest." Annalise reprimanded her husband who immediately turned his attention toward her.
"Should I go and see if she needs something?" Even now he sounded worried for his dear daughter, but Annalise had a task at hand - to keep him and his brothers from looking for Elaine for the rest of the night.
"Or how about you actually pay your wife some attention? You just returned today after so many days and I’m the last person you are concerned about." Annalise put on her best acting skills as she pretended to be mad at him.
An affectionate smile bloomed on Kenric’s lips as he pulled her into his arms and whispered - "You do know that you are the most important person to me in this entire world, right?"
"Lies! All you and your brothers know is how to lie to me." Annalise wasn’t giving up... yet.
"Seems like someone has been missing us." The one who spoke was Valerius as he too had made his way to her along with Damien.
"Well... at least, I’m nice enough to miss some people who seemed to have completely forgotten about me." Annalise continued to play her part in the act.
She felt Valerius moving to stand behind her before his hand too came to wrap around her waist, sandwiching her between him and Kenric while Damien stood nearby watching them with a knowing smile on his lips.
"Someone is unhappy with our lack of service. How about we make up for that lack tonight?" Valerius whispered against her ear, making her inhale deeply.
In the end, she did succeed in helping her daughter and keeping her husbands occupied for the night.
