Chapter 346: The Tree of Elements (Part Five)

Right! At first, only two magical elements existed - light and darkness. Later on, the element of light created the elements of water, air, and earth, while the element of darkness created the elements of fire and shadow.

"You found the tree and unlocked your true potential with the help of elemental magic essence that you just absorbed," the faery lord said. "You must now know that this destiny was not foisted on you. You are the right person to accept it. You’ve proven that today. You can joke around all day, Lady Annalise ...but I know what it’s like to pretend to fit into the world you’ve been given. Deep down...you will never be happy unless you can access the magical world and reach your potential. The late light fae queen gave you her magic, but now—it’s yours."

A chill went through Annalise as she took in his deep and heavy words. "What is my potential then? Am I born to carry the element of light?"

"Your destiny might be more specific than that," the faery lord said. "To be someone worthy to control the element of light is no small thing. It is an honor bestowed by the stars. In the end, the greatest honor is to go beyond that. Not to do what’s expected, but what’s unexpected."

His words were like a riddle that hardly made any sense but that was how faery answered questions directed their way.

When neither of them spoke for a while, the faery lord broke the silence - "It’s time for me to take my leave. Have a safe journey ahead."

She didn’t even get to open her mouth to stop him before the man disappeared from her sight as if he was never there in the first place.

"Annalise..." Esmeray was immediately by her side as soon as the faery lord disappeared, and because of him, Annalise was able to pull herself together and focus on the important matter they had at their disposal.

She turned her attention back to the tree. Whatever was going on, she knew that her fate had led her here in the first place. Now she had a little more understanding of why.

She placed her hand on the tree’s strangely smooth bark and felt the slow, soft energy moving through it like the waters of a mountain stream.

Although it was gentle, she could also feel how powerful it was. Way more powerful and pure than anything she ever experienced or heard about before this. Her light reacted to the tree’s magic and immediately found a connection with it, almost rejoicing in happiness to find its origin.

The tree thrummed under her touch as if accepting her and her elements.

’You have made it this far,’ the tree suddenly spoke in her head, almost surprising her and making her step away from it if not for her controlling herself at the very last moment. ’You have proved yourself worthy thus far, but there is much still to be done. Climb my branches and find your weapon.’ And then it went dead silent.

"Oh...okay." Annalise glanced at Esmeray who was silently observing her from a distance. He didn’t say anything about her needing to climb the tree, did he?

"The tree said I need to climb it." She told him as she pulled her hands away and moved to face the King of Darkness.

"Can you manage it?" he asked. "You don’t seem like someone who has ever climbed a tree."

"Nine-year-old Annalise wouldn’t have even blinked," she quickly defended herself. "So I think twenty-three-year-old Annalise can also handle it."

Esmeray just gave her a slight shoulder shrug that said she could give it a try if she wanted to do it.

Annalise let out a sigh before she returned her focus to the tree. She first reached for a low branch and tugged herself up, throwing a foot up to get a hold on a spot where the trunk bulged a little. If she could get a grip there, she could make it to the branches.

"Don’t help me!" She told Esmeray the moment he stepped forward on instinct to help her when her foot slipped for a mere second. "This is my weapon. I need to do this—urrrgh." She finally got herself up.

It got better from ’urrrgh’ onward. The branches were closer together, and as long as she did not look down, she could keep going up. She reached the branch at the very top and wrapped her hand around it.

It was a large branch and what caught her attention were the seven different colored vein-like things that were covering the entire branch. The moment her hand touched it, she sensed this was the branch the tree wanted her to take. When she put her hand around it, the entire tree trembled and the branch snapped off.

"Ahh!" She didn’t expect that, and it threw off her weight, almost causing her to fall from such a high point.

"I’m coming up there," Esmeray said, his voice filled with worry.

"No! It’s okay... I’m okay. I was just not prepared for that. I will be down there in no time." Annalise hurriedly told the man as she clung to the trunk, carefully finding the next foothold as she gripped the stick between the tree and her armpit. Getting down was definitely a little harder but she eventually reached the lowest branch from which she just jumped down and Esmeray was immediately there to keep her balanced on her feet as she landed on the ground.

He gave her a small, admiring smirk while he ran his fingers over the branch as if studying it. "If you ended up picking the right additions for your weapon, I’m sure this will make a really great and powerful weapon."

Annalise suddenly found herself curious about a certain few things but the first question she asked was - "What type of weapon is it going to be?"

"No one knows unless the final product will make its appearance. But whatever it will turn out to be, you will be able to wield it as if it’s made just for you, which is a fact. Just be patient until that day arrives." Esmeray answered her question as he cast a spell on the branch and it disappeared from Annalise’s hands.

"Let’s return to the castle now."
