The Veil of Darkness -
Chapter 262: Eirwen
Chapter 262: Eirwen
"Is this the place?" Annalise asked as she turned to look at Valerius with confusion-filled eyes because if it was indeed the right place then she failed completely to see hey it was his favorite place unless it had anything to do with something with his past, like some sort of memory he made there.
Valerius gave her a small smile as he shook his head in the negative. "It’s not but here is something that I think you will like to see." With that being said, he clicked his fingers, and a veil of illusion dropped from the wall, causing an entrance of some sort to appear right in front of them.
Annalise wasn’t given the time to progress exactly what was going on as she got pulled forward along with her husband who was heading straight toward the entrance. Now, she had stepped through many entrances with next to no clue about what the other side held in store for her, and sometimes, she was all alone to face whatever was awaiting her.
However, this time, she had one of her most beloved people by her side and she believed that as long as she was with him, everything would end up being fine in the end. She tightened her hold on his hand right before they stepped through the entrance.
It took a couple of seconds for her enhanced eyesight to adjust to the darkness inside the cave-like thing they were walking through and there was barely anything for her to see or make sense of. The two of them walked ahead for around a couple of minutes before she finally noticed an opening filled with brightness.
She would have loved to believe that considering the short distance they had traveled, they must still be somewhere near the palace but considering the amount of magic present in the Midnight Realm, she wasn’t too confident about her calculations.
They soon reached the end of the tunnel and as they stepped outside, Annalise found herself standing in a clearing that was covered in snow as far as her eyes could see.
"What is this place...?" She watched with her eyes popping wide as the huge creature made some sort of movement on the other side of the clearing, sitting on top of the little cliff.
"Holy stars...!" She felt like she was in the middle of some sort of dream as her eyes refused to move away from the creature. She felt like the moment she would look away, that thing would disappear.
It was huge enough to make her feel like she was nothing more than just a tiny rock in front of it. Beautiful white and silver skin with blue scales that started from light shades and ended on the darkest shades possible. It has big black eyes which stand out a lot from its body and its wings were huge enough to whisk an entire carriage away in one single flap.
"Is it... is it Eirwen?" She knew the answer even before she saw Valerius nodding his head in positive as a response to her question. It was almost impossible to not recognize the famous Ice dragon of the Midnight Realm, the one blessed by the ice element and had been the spirit beast of the heirs of ice.
There had been only three Ice dragons to ever exist in history but not at the same time, a new ice dragon was born every time the previous one died. And if her memory was serving her correctly, then the one in front of her was the third Ice dragon that was around a thousand years old.
"Want to get closer to it?" Valerius asked as he let go of her hand only to snake his arm around her waist and pulled her closer when he seemed to notice just how flabbergasted she was after seeing the Ice dragon.
"Can I?" Annalise asked in surprise but she still refused to look away from the beautiful creation right in front of her who seemed to be looking at the two of them in return.
"Everything that is mine belongs to you now, love." That was how Valerius decided to answer her question and it finally made her turn her attention from the dragon to the Crown Prince of the Midnight Realm who was standing right by her side.
"But what if it didn’t like me?" She asked while glancing at the dragon who hadn’t shifted the slightest bit from its position at the top of the cliff.
Valerius smiled softly as he answered, "That’s impossible. There’s no one in this world who can possibly dislike you, let alone Eirwen. I know that he will love you just like we all do."
Annalise was undoubtedly impressed by his confidence but that didn’t mean she stopped overthinking. Unlike her husband, she was not too sure about the idea of testing such a powerful being’s patience limit.
The bad part was that she wasn’t given the chance to make up her mind at all as Valerius suddenly let out a whistle as if to command Eirwen and the very next moment, the loud noise of fluttering of wings could be heard as the dragon flapped its wings before it shoved its body toward the ground with the momentum of his wings that made it seem like it was flying down.
Annalise was quick to find her way behind Valerius all the while she peaked from behind him to keep her focus on the dragon who was now on the snow-covered ground. As it started walking toward them, she felt tremors of ice energy shifting beneath her feet and her hold on Valerius’ arm tightened to the point of leaving well-defined marks, still, the man didn’t even appear as if he minded it at all.
"Trust me." Valerius told her as he gave her hand a light squeeze before he started pulling her toward the dragon who had crossed half of the way and was only a couple of metres away as if it was waiting for them to cover the remaining distance and approach it.
Valerius stopped after taking a couple of steps forward when he noticed that she was still struggling to put her trust in the dragon for it not to hurt her.
He turned to face her and spoke, "Let’s do this then, let me help you calm down enough to approach it. Alright?" He waited patiently to hear her answer.
Annalise first looked at her husband for a second or two before turning her attention to the big dragon standing behind him and looking at them with interest filled eyes.
"How are you going to do that?" She asked while returning her attention back to Valerius.
"I want you to forget about everything else and focus on the presence of ice energy here in this place. Once you have made a proper connection with it, try to let it lead you to him instead of me. Try to connect with him and understand his thoughts, you will realize that he mean no harm to you." He provided her with the guidance and after a couple of deep breaths, she did follow it.
She didn’t close her eyes but focused her attention on the presence of the ice element and followed it straight to the dragon and almost retracted back immediately when she felt it responding. However, she somehow succeeded in staying calm and for once, tried to trust the beast.
’Can you undersand me?’ She wasn’t sure if talking through telepathy would work with the dragon or not as he had a master, but she still gave it a try because she had no idea how else she could understand what he was feeling about her sudden presence there.
’Of course, My Princess.’ The dragon answered in such a polite and warm tone that for a moment, Annalise almost mistook it for Valerius. She could instantly pick on the similarities in their personalities and aura, the two of them were too alike.
’Do you mind my presence here?’ She found herself asking as she took a tentative step toward it even before listening to the answer.
"It’s my pleasure to see you here, My Princess. I’m honored to have your company here today." The dragon replied politely as it bowed its head to greet her firmly.
A huge smile bloomed on Annalise’s lips as she finally lost the last bit of her reserve against the dragon and headed straight toward it without any worry about her safety.
"It looks like my idea worked." Valerius stated with a lightness in his tone as he followed right behind her.
Annalise reached the dragon who lowered its head enough to put it right in front of her. She raised her hand but still hesitated for a couple of seconds.
’Go ahead, My Princess.’ The dragon motivated and it made her finally place her palm against its cold but very soft cheek.
