Chapter 171: The Cursed Castle’s History
"Five hundred years ago, the Midnight Queen called me and my brothers to assign us a mission. There were reports about various mysterious attacks in some of the villages or towns located near the boundary of the Seelie Realm, and according to the queen, it was more than just a coincidence."
"The three of us accepted the assignment and left the Midnight Realm to investigate the attacks. It was only after several months of constant investigation did we realize that something, or someone, breached the wards around the Seelie Realm, creating multiple cracks in it because of which darkness was seeping out of the Seelie Realm and into our world."
Valerius stopped there for a few seconds to take in a deep breath and also to give some time to Annalise for absorbing all the information that he had just provided.
"When we returned to our realm and informed the Queen about our findings, she was sure that we needed to stop things going out of control as soon as possible. So, we were given two more tasks - first, to locate the two cores of the wards around the Seelie Realm and fix them, and second..."
He suddenly trailed off causing Annalise to crane her head back to look at the man who had his eyes still fixed on the ceiling. "What was the second task?" She asked when he didn’t continue for a while.
Valerius turned his attention to her and there was a very familiar warmth in his icy-blue eyes as he looked at her with affection. He brushed his fingers through her hair as he whispered, "The second task was to find you."
"Huh?" Annalise was once again left completely baffled. What did he mean by finding her? She didn’t even exist five hundred years ago.
Her expression seemed to amuse the man as he chuckled softly while patting her head. "Right before the three of us were leaving the midnight realm, the queen brought the Royal Seer to us and we were given the second task - to find the soulmate who will bind the three of us together for eternity and will become the light of our dark world."
Annalise gawked at the man with a suspicious look on her face which clearly screamed how little she believed his words. "Are you telling me that you all been looking for me for the past five centuries?" It sounded impossible no matter how much she thought about it.
"The Royal Seer did give us a hint about you not being born back then but we weren’t told that we won’t be able to find you for more than four and a half centuries," Valerius confessed.
"Then how did you know I was the one? We never met before..." The more she thought about it, the more questions filled her little brain.
"The Royal Seer gave us another hint. She told us to accept the very first marriage proposal and that we would receive and it was the King and your father who came to us with the marriage proposal and we did exactly as we were told. Other than believing in the Royal Seer’s words, we barely had any other option left after failing in finding you for so many centuries."
Annalise finally couldn’t take it anymore and moved to a sitting position while turning her body to face her husband who was giving her shocks after shocks with these revelations. "I’m not sure if I should feel happy or sad, or maybe nothing at all, after hearing all this."
Valerius also shifted to sit in front of her as he scooted closer and took hold of her face between his palms before whispering, "I can’t really decide that for you but I will personally like you not to think too much about it. What matters is how we feel about each other in the present and not how it all started in the past. The truth was, we have no clue that the person we were searching for was going to be our soulmate. The Royal Seer kept that part of the information from us and we were only told that you will keep us connected and bound together as a family."
Annalise opened her mouth but then closed it. She did agree with him, what really mattered was their feelings for each other in the present and not the past. Letting out a small breath, she nodded her head before asking, "Then what about your first task? It took you so long to find me but what about finding the two cores of the wards of the Seelie Realm?"
Valerius tilted his head to the side, the expression on his face clearly said that he was amused to see her suddenly changing the topic and once again focusing the attention back on the main story. "What do you think?" He asked in return instead of answering the question.
"Considering our current situation... it seems like you all failed in finding the cores or at least, something happened that disturbed your plans because the darkness is very much present here in our world," Annalise answered truthfully.
The dark lord nodded his head as his expression shifted to a serious look as he finally revealed what exactly happened. "We did find the cores. While it only took us a few years to find the first core, it took us over a century to find the second one. And even after finding them, no one in the two realms and the Seelie Empire knew how to fix those cracks."
His eyes shifted to the portal and the two trees as he dropped yet another bomb - "This portal... it’s actually one of those two cores of the protection wards and the castle was built solely to keep it safe and protected. Every owner of this castle who has lived here was actually the guardian looking after the safety of the core and the portal... until the last guardian disappeared around a thousand years ago and left this place abandoned."
