Chapter 143: The Illusion Array

As Valerius and the team of Mer guards headed deeper into the valley, they encountered more dangerous creatures waiting for them. While they looked as harmless as a bunny, their reality was nothing less than the monsters who ventured into the deeper parts of the Great Woodlands.

"What’s that?" Skyler asked out loud, drawing everyone’s attention toward the huge stone podium that was built in the middle of the valley they all were currently walking through.

Murmurs broke through the silence of the area as the guards started whispering among themselves as they all raised questions and speculated about the stone podium.

Valerius was the only one who stepped toward the podium while Skyler signaled all his men to stop and wait until they clear out the mystery of the podium.

The first dark lord silently inspected the stone podium as he stood a little distance from it, his sharp ice-blue eyes were keenly observing every little detail of the array that was set up to stop them or anyone else in general from reaching the core point of the magical ward.

"It’s an illusion array. We have to solve it if we want to continue walking forward." He informed the group of men behind him before he allowed his air element to surface and recognize the spells that were used in building the trap.

"Shouldn’t we consider it a good thing that we are encountering these traps? It means that we are heading in the right direction." One of the guards pointed out in excitement and immediately grabbed the attention of others who seemed to agree with him but this happiness of theirs didn’t last long.

"Do you think the elders, who created the core of the ward and set up these traps to guard it, were fools? I’m sure you will find such traps all around this place that are built merely to misguide people." Skyler was the one to confront the foolish conclusion of his subordinates.

There was silence following the captain’s words for a little while before another one of the guards spoke, raising a really concerning question - "Then how are we going to know if we are heading in the right direction or not?"

This sudden question raised concerns among the guards who once again started murmuring before Skyler silenced them all with a sharp glare. Whether the guards were really one of the bests in the Mer Kingdom or not was yet to be cleared but one thing clearly noticeable about them was that they really lacked discipline.

"You all don’t have to worry, we are heading in the right direction." That was all that Valerius said when he finally retracted his air element after they had successfully piqued up on all the spells that had been cast on to set the illusion array.

"Do you have a certain plan to break this trap or do we need to find a way after entering the array?" Skyler asked as he walked forward to stand next to Valerius, his own powers trying to pick up the strength of the array and he soon found that the array wasn’t a simple one and was definitely set up by a really powerful person.

Valerius took a step back before he let out a small sigh and replied, "This array ain’t that complicated. Give me a little bit of time and I’ll take care of it."

Before Skyler’s brain could process the shock that it just received from Valerius’ words and respond, the first dark lord was already stepping on the stone podium and entering the array that got activated the very moment Valerius set his foot on the podium.

A sharp blow of energy caused Skyler and his men to stagger backward and when they all finally got their footing and returned their attention to the dark fae, they found the array fully activated.

Bright red light shot up in the sky from the circular rune that was drawn on the stone podium and surrounded Valerius, locking him inside a fire energy wall.

"Is he in trouble?" One of the guards asked as they all stared at the stone podium in shock. Seeing the array coming to life in front of their very eyes, it was pretty clear to everyone at this point that the array was way too powerful for it to be just a mere distraction to keep the intruders from finding the right path leading to the core of the magical ward.

Skyler took a couple of seconds as he hesitated but then finally made his decision and answered, "He said that he can handle the array. Let’s trust him this once and wait."

The guards became silent after that as they, along with Skyler, watched the array trying to destroy Valerius who was standing in the middle of the podium with his white robes and long silver hair fluttering in a non-existent wind.

Seconds turned into minutes, and those long minutes dragged on for a while before the array suddenly became fiercer and the intensity of its attack of fire energy increased, almost engulfing Valerius and making it hard for anyone to see the dark lord properly.

To the spectators, the array appeared like some sort of formation that was using fire energy to destroy the person that was stuck inside the array. However, the truth was that the fire energy was the first illusion created by the array and it was actually trying to destroy the intruder through a mass of illusions that were set inside the array.

The energy level of the array started increasing rapidly and at one point, it became so intense that Skyler and his team were having a hard time holding their ground. All of a sudden, an even bigger force than the previous one, hit them all and sent them scampering against the huge rocks that were scattered around the place or the trees that were standing nearby.

When everything went back to normal after a couple of seconds and everyone returned to standing on their feet instead of sprawling on the ground, they found a perfectly unscathed Valerius standing in the middle of the podium after his successful destruction of the possibly most powerful illusion array that had ever existed in their world.
