The Veil of Darkness
Chapter 125: Mer Queen’s Disciple

Chapter 125: Mer Queen’s Disciple

The man in the cloak who had initially asked the question stepped even closer in the direction of Annalise and the girl before he finally pulled down the hood of the cloak.

Annalise couldn’t deny that the sight that greeted her was one of a kind. The man had dark red long hair that reached past his shoulders and was styled simply yet elegantly with a golden hairpin. His eyes were deep green and his skin a little bit tanned. As for his body, even though most of it was still hidden under the cloak, Annalise could still tell that the man was just as muscular as Damien and as tall as all her husbands.

The rest of his companions followed suit and took off their hoods, all of them shared similar features with the first man. They all carried muscular bodies, their hair was either dark red, reddish brown, or reddish blonde. And their eyes were just as colorful as their hair.

She felt a nudge from beside her which pulled her out of her trance and made her turn her attention to the mer girl. "What?" She asked the girl but didn’t get the chance to receive an answer as the sword pressed against her neck suddenly moved closer.

Annalise couldn’t deny that her heart almost leaped out of her chest for a fleeting moment. She didn’t need to inspect these swords closely to know just how sharp they were, just a little pressure and it would cleanly pierce her delicate skin.

The man with green eyes once again spoke and his voice was just as sharp as before and this time, his entire attention was focused on Annalise, "You have put on a strong glamor. Take it down and show us your true form." It was neither a request nor an order, it was clearly a warning.

Before Annalise could say or do anything, the mer girl spoke again. "Have you guys not heard me? Put your blades down and tell me why you all suddenly appeared in Lakeshire Town. Considering you all are from the sky castle, you should be aware that this town is under the territory of the Mer Court."

Hearing the girl’s words, Annalise realized two things - first, her guess about the girl’s identity was correct, she was indeed from the Mer Clan. Second, these mysterious men in cloaks were from the Sky Castle... the home of the dragon shifters.

"So you are from the Mer Court." The man with green eyes concluded as he looked at the girl before he once again turned his attention to Annalise. "But you are not..."

Annalise wasn’t sure if she should be or shouldn’t be surprised to see that the man was able to tell that she wasn’t from the Mer Court even when he couldn’t see her true form because of the glamour.

Before she could have made up her mind, the man continued, "... Such powerful aura and essence of elemental magic surrounding you, it’s impossible for you to be one of the mers." He wasn’t speculating, instead, he was sure of his judgment.

Since there was no other option left for her, Annalise decided to take down the glamour and return to her real identity. The magic took over her body and returned her to her true self within a few minutes.

She was once again dressed in her beautiful white gown and her platinum blue hair was back too along with her eyes returning to their ocean blue color.

She was met with loud gasps of surprise when she reopened her eyes and looked at those around her. All of them were looking at her in a trance including the mer girl who had her mouth hanging open.

"What is it?" She asked while touching her face with her fingers to check if something was wrong with her face that ended up surprising them to such a level. After all, there were chances that she had messed up when taking down the glamour.

However, as she trailed her fingers down her cheeks, nose, and lips, she could tell that her face was more likely alright and the glamour hadn’t messed up with her features.

"My lady, you are so pretty." The mer girl was the first one to answer and her compliment finally made Annalise realize why everyone looked so shocked after seeing her.

"Oh... umm... thank you..." Even though she had been receiving compliments for her beauty all her life, she still wasn’t used to it. Hence, her odd response.

"Who are you?" The man with green eyes asked as his interest in her identity was picked once again after she revealed her true self.

"That’s none of your business." The one who spoke this time was none other than the mer girl. She seemed to be totally in defensive mode.

The men seemed almost done with her and Annalise feared that they would hurt her if she ended up irritating them too much.

"She’s with me and I’m Leela, the youngest disciple of the Mer Queen, that’s all you guys need to know." The girl spoke again, surprising not only Annalise but also the men from the Sky Castle with the revelation of her identity.

The men shared glances among themselves before they turned their attention back on Annalise and the girl who just introduced herself as Leela.

Though their expressions remained mostly unreadable, thankfully, they removed the swords that were pointed at Annalise and Leela’s throats but still didn’t give them enough room to flee.

"We are aware that this is the territory of the Mers and we should have seemed for the Queen’s permission before arriving here. However, the situation was somewhat too urgent for us to follow the rules. We were leaving because we have something important to do but we are ready to ask for the Queen’s forgiveness." It was the man with green eyes who spoke.

"What was so important that made people from the Sky Castle enter the mers territory without any care of the protocols?" Leela wasn’t ready to give up yet as she once again put the men at the center of everyone’s focus.

The men once again shared glances among themselves, probably contemplating whether to answer the question or just how to answer without giving out too much information.

"We can’t tell you much as it is a personal matter of the Sky Castle..." The man started to speak but got cut before he could have finished his sentence by none other than Leela.

"It was your personal matter when it was limited to your territory but ever since you stepped inside our lands, it was no longer just your matter," Leela stated as a matter of fact.

The man with green eyes let out a long sigh before his attention was back on Annalise as if she was the one irritating him instead of Leela. "Then answer me first, why were you tailing us?" It was pretty clear that his question was only for Annalise and not for Leela, meaning that they noticed her following them from the very beginning.

"I... I just found you guys mysterious because of your attire and sneaky behavior. It just piqued my interest and I just decided to follow you all because I had nothing else to do at the moment." Annalise just answered honestly as there was no point in creating excuses.

Almost everyone gave her weird looks as if her truth was actually sounded like an excuse to them. She just shrugged her shoulders and didn’t speak further as there was nothing to say.

"How about you answer my question now?" Leela was quick to bring their attention to the main topic.

"I will if you promise me one thing..." The man proposed and made both Annalise and Leela curious about what was his demand.

"What sort of promise?" Leela asked as she stared at the man with suspicion-filled eyes.

"I’ll tell you the reason behind our sudden appearance in your territory but you have to let us go immediately as we can’t stay here anymore. Just like I told you, we are taking care of something really important." The man explained and looked at Leela, knowing fully well that the young girl was the one deciding his fate at the moment.

Leela was silent for a while and seemed like the was in deep thought. Several moments passed before she finally spoke with a little nod of her head, "Alright, we will do that. I can grant you your wish as long as you can answer my question."

Annalise was surprised to see the girl agreeing so easily, it made her wonder exactly what was going on. It wasn’t normal for a young girl up let someone escape who had broken such a strict rule, or maybe it was all because of Leela’s identity as the Mer Queen’s disciple.

The men once again shared glances before the one with green eyes spoke, finally revealing the reason for their sudden unannounced appearance in Lakeshire Town.
