Chapter 60: 60. Orcs

At the outside of the Dome

The air crackled with the strain of mana being funneled relentlessly into the barrier. Seven professors stood in a wide formation, their arms outstretched, raw mana pouring from their hands like rivers of light. Yet, the barrier of the dome remained motionless, unyielding.

Sweat gleamed on their foreheads as hours passed with no sign of progress.

Nearby, the rescue squads stood in grim silence. Among them were the academy’s top professors, Volkhardt and Liora, along with the principal himself. His face was filled with deep lines of worry, his eyes darting between the dome and the exhausted professors.

Liana standing away from the chaos, her hands gripping her shawl tightly. She wanted to believe in her young master’s strength, he was resourceful, always—but even that thought couldn’t quell the concern in her heart.

Her gaze shifted uneasily until she spotted Erin, leaning against a tree, her expression unreadable.

Summoning courage, Liana approached with hesitant steps. "Miss," she called softly.

Silverhead turned ro see the maid with an amused smile. "Oh? Something troubling you?"

"Miss Rin... she was with you earlier. Where is she now?"

Erin tilted her head, her smile growing slightly wider. "Ah, Senior Rin? Said she will go back to the dorm. You shouldn’t concern yourself with her."

Inside the Dome

Rin’s steps echoed against the damp, twisted foliage that seemed alive. Every breath burned in her chest, her sweat-soaked violet hair clinging to her face. The weight of the bag clinging to her shoulders only added to the ache in her muscles.

Her thoughts warred as she ran. Why did I agree to this? I didn’t want to be here. Her instincts had screamed at her to stay away from the dome, but talking to that girl made her take this decision unconsciously.

Above her, the sky was blocked by the dome’s veil, but she saw some more terrifying things in the sky, harpies, circling and like vultures.

"I hate this," she whispered, her voice trembling with fear.

Then.

She stumbled forward, her boot catching on an exposed root. With a startled cry, she fell forward, her palms scraping against the ground.

Before she could rise, a low hiss came from behind her. The sound froze her instantly. Slowly, she turned her head, her breath hitching as her eyes locked onto a Shadeviper, a C-ranked large snake.

Its black scales shines under the dim light, and venom dripped from its fangs as its unblinking eyes stared at her hungrily.

"Move!"

The shout jolted her out of paralysis and she immediately crouched down.

"Velsraun."

Mana sliced through the air in a luminous arc, striking the Shadeviper directly. Its head exploded and its lifeless body collapsed like a coiled rope.

Rin spun around to see Velmira, staff raised. Her expression was grim.

"Are you alright, Senior Rin?" Velmira asked, offering her hand. Rin accepted, staggering to her feet.

"What are you doing here?" Velmira continued, frustration darkening her tone. "You’re not even leading a team today!"

"I came to help," violet head said simply, brushing dirt from her clothes.

Velmira’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Help? You can’t be serious! Do you know how many students have already died here?"

Rin cut her off, her voice sharp. "I’m here because of you."

Velmira blinked, her anger faltering as confusion took hold.

"You have to unseal my curse," Rin said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

____

Leo leaning against a tree, the rough bark digging into his back. His body was covered in cuts and bruises, his crimson eyes half-closed, his breathing shallow.

Mana and stamina were nearly drained. His squad sat nearby, just as battered, their faces pale under the dome’s dim light.

Suddenly, Leo’s eyes snapped open. His instincts scream a sharp sense of danger. "Girl!" he barked.

She flinched, startled, but scrambled over to him, confusion clear in her wide eyes. "What is it?"

"Heal me, now!" Leo ordered, his tone urgent.

Without hesitation, Olyraa knelt beside him, her hands glowing softly as she began to channel healing magic. The warm light started to knit his wounds together, though not completely. Meanwhile, Leo pulled a potion from the bag, uncorked it with his teeth, and drank it in one go.

As the healing finished, Leo stood. "Sword," he said, holding out his hand.

Varkas hesitated for a moment before tossing him a short sword. Leo caught it mid-air, gripping it tightly.

Then, the ground began to tremble.

The vibrations were slow and heavy, each one sinking deep into the earth like the footsteps of something massive.

Leo’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the trees ahead. "Stay down. No matter what happens, don’t come out," he growled, his voice low and commanding.

And then they appeared—Ironfang Orcs.

They were enormous, standing nearly eight feet tall, their pig-like snouts snarling, tusks dripping with saliva. There were twelve of them, armed with heavy clubs and axes. Their black-and-white vision locked onto Leo, who glowed bright red in their sight.

The orcs roared, their guttural cries shaking the trees and sending leaves fluttering to the ground.

Leo spat on the ground, his expression twisting with irritation. "First chickens, now pigs? This place is a damn joke."

Without waiting, he charged forward, his sword a blur in his hand.

The lead orc swung its massive club, the ground exploding where it struck. Leo darted to the side, his boots skidding on the dirt. Using the orc’s arm as leverage, he vaulted onto its shoulder in one smooth motion.

SHUNK!

His sword plunged into the orc’s eye, blood spraying as the beast roared in pain. Leo didn’t stop—he slashed the blade across its throat, severing it cleanly. The orc toppled like a felled tree, its body hitting the ground with a heavy thud.

Leo leaped off, landing in a crouch. Another orc charged at him, its axe swinging wide in a deadly arc.

"Fucking Bring it!" Leo shouted, his voice filled with rawness.

It swings its blade horizontally, sliding under the blade, his sword cuts the orc’s ankle clean through. It crashed forward, squealing in pain. Leo climbed onto its back and drove his sword into its neck, finishing it with two brutal strikes.

A third orc loomed over him, its club raised high. Leo braced himself to dodge—but before it could strike, a blinding lightning bolt hit from the air.

BOOM!

The bolt struck the orc directly, electricity crackling across its body. The beast trembling violently, its skin blackening as the energy burned through it. Finally, it collapsed, smoke rising from its charred corpse.

Leo turned sharply, his squad staring in shock. At the edge of the clearing stood Rin, gripping a small staff. Her violet hair was wild, her pink eyes wide with disbelief.

Then, slowly, a grin spread across her face. She let out a shaky laugh, then bounced on her feet, fists pumping in excitement. "I killed it!" she squealed, her voice breaking with joy.

Behind her, Velmira stood, one brow raised. Her expression was a mix of annoyance and reluctant respect.
