Chapter 142. Headache

Chapter 142: 142. Headache

Leo’s crimson eyes were dulled by a pounding headache that throbbed in his head like a drum, and he was slouched in a cushioned chair with his loose undershirt sticking to his sweaty skin. As two maids worked silently to clean up the mess he had created, the room’s warm cedar scent blended with the sharp scent of cleaning herbs.

An elderly man with a gentle, weathered face and thin gray hair, Caulem’s personal physician, leaned over Leo and checked his pulse with rough fingers. Leo’s confusion was stabilized by his serene demeanor.

The doctor, who had spent years tending to nobles, stood straight and spoke in a firm but gentle manner. "Young Lord Leonhardt, how are you feeling right now?"

He pulled out a small glass jar of capsules and handed it to Leo.

Leo took the jar, turning it in his hand, the cool glass calming him as he studied the capsules.

His mind felt broken, flashing the nightmare’s green-eyed woman who’d gripped his soul.

The doctor bowed slightly, his voice gentle. "Rest well, Young Lord." He slipped out, the door closing softly behind him, leaving a heavy quiet.

Liana moved forward, glancing at his weary face with concern and hesitancy. Sensing his burden, she spoke softly but curiously, "What happened, Young Master Leo?"

Leo stood, swaying a little as the room whirled, his hand clinging to the arm of the chair for support. His voice was arid, with a hint of weary self-loathing. "It appears that my body is not as capable of handling alcohol as I had assumed."

"Some future Duke," he muttered as he put a hand to his forehead, the pain a constant throb.

Liana paused, watching the final maid go as the door softly closed.

With caution but firmness, she dropped her voice. "Young Master... why did you wake up and ask for Lady Rin Valarune?"

Leo froze, clenching his fingers around the pill jar until his knuckles turned white. Reminiscent of the banquet—Rin’s arms encircling him, her voice murmuring, "Come on, my dear, how could I resist you if you’re like this?" His past and present were blurred by the words, which sounded so much like Chloe’s.

His voice was strained and low as he rubbed his head. "How did I get here at all? I was at the banquet, then..."

"Young Master, you passed out at the banquet. We brought you here to rest after Lady Rin imformed us. You were sleeping."

As he took her words, Leo’s crimson eyes narrowed and his frown deepened.

"Where is Rin right now?"

Liana tilted her head and looked a little confused. "Young Master, she left after the banquet. She returned to the estate of her family."

He let out a breath and ran a hand through his red hair. "Right. She did, of course.

He looked at the pill jar for a moment before putting it on the table with a soft clink. "I need a bath," he said quietly as he walked into the next room.

Liana nodded, but her voice stopped him at the door. "Young Master, the Duke would like you to come to the guest room as soon as you can."

"Thanks for letting me know, Liana," he said.

Standing in front of the bathing chamber’s polished bronze mirror, he could clearly see his reflection in the flickering light of a single lamp.

His crimson eyes grow drained. The strain of the hooded woman’s eerie words echoed in his mind like a curse, as shown by his pale face, which was still perspiring.

The cool drops of water splashed against his skin as he scooped it out of the basin, removing the sticky perspiration.

The flaming wasteland of his dream was still burning in his mind as his fingers gripped the edge of the basin, knuckles white as his heart raced.

His voice was a low, tremulous murmur as he gazed into the mirror. "Who was she? Is she somehow connected to me, or is this just a one-time nightmare?" The memory of her piercing green eyes made him gasp, and he couldn’t get the fear out of his head.

"Elynn," he whispered, leaning closer.

[Reo, Elynn is here!] He saw the familiar interface flash.

Leo spoke in a sharper, more urgent tone. "Before I lost consciousness, what did Rin Valarune say? I am aware that she said something."

[No!]

[Rin didn’t say anything, Reo.]

[You collapsed from the alcohol, and she held you up. That’s all.]

His eyes narrowed, suspicion flaring. "You’re not lying to me, are you?"

[|••|] Elynn’s interface flickered with its usual silly symbols, like a digital tease.

[I see everything, Reo. You’re mine to watch, remember? And I don’t lie. Even if you’re an idiot for drinking.]

Leo let out a long sigh and rubbed his temple, his frustration matched by the pounding headache. "Fantastic." His voice was dry but bitter as he muttered, "Now I detest alcohol."

[You should buy a resistance ring!]

"Fuck you," Leo retorted.

He straightened his posture. He stated firmly, "I’ll ask Rin or Erin about it myself."

Then he recalled—Erin’s gift, given amid the chaos of the banquet with her trademark enigmatic smile.

He made his way back to his room. Ignoring its capsules, the pill jar sat on the table. Leo concentrated while seated at the solid oak study desk, a glimmer of mana calling forth a rolled book-like object from his item space.

There was a slight shimmer to the elegant gift paper tied with a silver ribbon.

Carefully, He removed the paper, revealing a stack of parchment secured by a thin metal pin.

His crimson eyes widened as he spread the pages on the desk and realized they were a blueprint, unlike anything else in this mana-driven world, with incredibly detailed lines and notes.

"Elynn, construct the picture out of this," he said.

[Scanning...] As it read the pages, Elynn’s interface hummed and brightened.

His fingers brushed the edge of the parchment like sacred text. Every line, every note, every mana valve sketched with the same brutal clarity that once filled his scope back on Earth.

As the last page turned, Elynn showed a vibrant representation of a sniper rifle with a long barrel and a frame made for mana-based shots. It was sleek and deadly. The notes on the blueprint said it was a weapon with pure, destructive power.

He leaned back in his chair and smiled further as he looked at the projection. The rifle’s familiar shape brought back memories of his past life as Reo Carter, when he was part of weapons like this. "Thanks, Erin," he said in a strong, eager voice.

"I can be myself again with this."
