Chapter 129: 129. Human experiments

Leo’s red eyes softened as they moved from the letter to Lysa, standing shyly near Liana by the door. He walked to her, crouching to her level, voice gentle.

"Hey, little girl, did you get some rest?"

Lysa’s little face brightened and her eyes glowed with a timid, gullible smile. "Yes," she said in a quiet but distinct whisper.

"Is Liana looking after you well?"

Her voice was a little louder as she nodded once more. "Everyone has been really kind to me."

"That’s good," Leo said, softly ruffling her hair with a gentle yet warm touch akin to a big brother’s tenderness. He spoke in a sly whisper as he leaned closer. "I’ve got some news for you, Lysa. Your father’s coming to Lucian’s birthday banquet to take you home."

Lysa froze, eyes wide with disbelief, voice shaky. "R-really?"

"Really. You’ll see him soon."

Her small arms flew around him, hugging his neck tightly as tears fell. "Thank you!" she sobbed, her tiny body trembling with relief and joy, voice muffled against his shoulder. "Thank you......"

Leo’s chuckle was soft, teasing but kind as he patted her back. "Hey, no need to cry, little one. It’s all good now." He lifted her carefully, her light weight a reminder of what he’d fought for, and carried her to a cushioned couch in the office’s corner, setting her down gently. His gaze flicked to Liana, tone calm but firm. "Liana, wait outside for a moment."

Liana bowed, her warm eyes showing curiosity and worry, and slipped out, the heavy oak door closing with a soft thud.

Alric’s eyes narrowed, as he asked. "Why bring this girl here, Leonhardt?"

Leo’s face hardened, smile fading as he turned to Alric, voice steady but grim. "The cult’s not just infiltrating noble houses, Father. They’re running human experiments."

He gently lifted Lysa’s small arm, showing a cluster of syringe marks on her pale skin—red, raw, a painful pattern of scars.

Alric staggered back. His voice was a shaky whisper, barely heard, like the sight stole his breath. "Gods... did they do this to Vivien, too?"

Leo shook his head, tone firm, a quiet comfort. "No, thank the gods. Vivien was spared."

Alric trembled with guilt and rage, his fists clenched, and he voiced a low, angry growl. "Why are these creatures experimenting on humans?"

Leo’s voice softened as he turned to face Lysa, a gentle change from the storm within him. "Can you help me, Lysa? Please, just a few questions."

She nodded, small hand gripping his, eyes wide but trusting. Leo spoke in a kind and uplifting tone. "Could you explain how you saperted from your family and found yourself in that terrible situation?"

Lysa’s eyes fell, her brow furrowed as she rummaged through shattered memories, her voice a frail murmur. "Mama needed to buy something, so she took me to town. After buying, she said she has small work and instructed me to wait in the carriage. I was escorted through the crowd by the guards, but...." Her tiny body shook, fear seeping into her eyes, and her voice wavered. "Then... everything went dark."

Leo leaned closer, voice a steady lifeline. "What happened next, Lysa?"

She shook her head, tears welling, voice breaking. "I woke up in that place... something tight around my neck. I was so scared, crying for Mama. Only Myr... only Myr talked to me, said it’d be okay." Her grip on Leo’s hand tightened, small fingers digging in, seeking comfort.

Leo’s heart ached, but he pressed gently, voice soft but searching. "What did those people do to you before I got there?"

As memories came flooding back, Lysa’s breath caught and her eyes glazed with fear. "They tied me to a table. There were needles everywhere... and this big machine I’d never seen before. They did something, and it glowed. Light appeared, but they stopped and removed everything." As she tightened her grip on Leo’s hand, her voice faltered, her body shook, and tears fell.

"Lysa, you have such courage. Now everything is fine." He gently and groundingly wiped a tear from her cheek. "All right, go play with Vivien."

Calm but firm, he raised his voice. "Liana!"

The door opened, and Liana stepped in, her warm gaze softening at Lysa’s tearful face. Leo nodded to her, tone kind but strong. "Take Lysa to Vivien." Liana gently took Lysa’s hand, leading her out, the door closing with a soft click.

Alric’s face was a mask of fury and grief, voice a low, trembling growl. "Those monsters... what are they planning?"

"They’re creating monsters," he said, counting on his fingers. "Mindless humans, they’ve no thoughts, no pain, just a drive to kill anything alive. Then, massive humanoid abominations, regenerating faster than you can cut them down. Third, people who function normally but feel no pain, no matter how you hurt them. And finally, those pumped with instant strength—triple their usual power, driven by uncontrollable rage."

Alric stared, gray eyes wide, shock stealing his breath as the horrors hit him. His voice was a hoarse whisper, barely heard. "You... fought all of those?"

"Yeah, my bad luck."

Alric’s anger burst out, hand dragging down his face, voice thick with a father’s worry and fury. "How much did you risk for Vivien?".

Leo’s gaze was flat, brushing off the question with hard resolve. "No point dwelling on it." He shifted, eyes narrowing with a hunter’s focus, moving to the next step. "Did you invite the guy I asked to the banquet?"

Alric’s brow creased, suspicion in his voice. "Baron Varion? As you asked, I sent out the invitation. The man openly opposes our house and is a snake. Why would you like to invite him?

Leo’s smirk was cold, sharp, a dangerous glint in his red eyes. "Human trafficking. I want to see which fish in this pond are clean—and which ones are swimming in filth."

"Be careful, son. Sharks would be present in these deep waters.

Leo’s grin grew, fearless, a spark of defiance in his tone. "Don’t worry, Father. I know how to hunt."

Rep closed the door behind him with a deep, quiet thud as he entered Caulem Manor’s cool hallway. The air was lighter in the hallway, and the marble floor was streaked with golden light from the morning light coming through the tall arched windows.

As he turned, a familiar figure caught his eye—Lucian, standing by a window at the hall’s end, dawn’s glow framing him in a golden halo. Sensing Leo, Lucian’s head snapped up, eyes brightening, a wide smile breaking through the gloom. "Big brother!" he called, voice warm with relief and pure joy. "I’ve been waiting for you!"
