Chapter 495 - Chapter 495 Chapter 495 Settling Scores After Autumn
Chapter 495: Chapter 495: Settling Scores After Autumn Chapter 495: Chapter 495: Settling Scores After Autumn In the private room, the awkward atmosphere caused by Zhong Mengxuan’s arrival lasted for a while before quickly dissipating.
Old Master Lu and Old Master Zhong had both weathered great storms, how could they be stymied by Zhong Mengxuan’s trivial tricks!
After a brief displeasure, the two resumed their jovial chatting as if the incident of Zhong Mengxuan’s arrival had never occurred.
Seeing the performance of the two old men, the others exchanged glances and tacitly began to ignore Zhong Mengxuan’s presence.
Zhong Mengxuan initially thought, despite the awkwardness, that at least she had sat down, symbolizing that the Zhong and Lu families were discussing the marriage together. Lu Chenran would realize that she was Zhong Niangyao’s cousin and would no longer snub her.
But she could never have imagined that in just a moment, everyone there seemed to have conspired to ignore her without prior agreement, not even glancing in her direction even though she was sitting there.
Suddenly, she felt a rush of panic, and in her confusion, she looked towards Lu Chenran–only to find that even he was consciously or unconsciously avoiding her gaze, never meeting her eyes.
The two families chatted and laughed as if completely unaffected by Zhong Mengxuan’s arrival, restoring the lively atmosphere.
Zhong Mengxuan, who had entered the room smoothly, now felt utterly restless. Since everyone was ignoring her, she now felt like she was merely air.
The meal ended amid everyone’s laughter, and the families went their separate ways.
This time, Lu Yichen personally took Old Master Zhong and Old Madam Zhong home.
At the doorstep, Lu Yichen said goodbye to Zhong Niangyao without entering. He knew that Old Master Zhong still had matters to attend to after returning to the Zhong family, and his presence would not be appropriate.
After Lu Yichen left, Old Master Zhong didn’t enter the house immediately but waited at the entrance, as the others had taken a different car to return.
He didn’t go in, so Old Madam Zhong and Zhong Niangyao waited outside with him.
Zhong Mingyu and Li Yiqiu hadn’t gone together, so they had been waiting at home all along. Learning that Old Sir wasn’t entering the house upon returning, both were surprised.
Zhong Mingyu didn’t know what was happening, merely feeling puzzled.
Li Yiqiu, however, had a foreboding feeling.
They both went outside and saw Old Master Zhong standing at the doorstep, his face slightly somber, his mood indiscernible.
“Dad, you’re back, why don’t you go inside?” Zhong Mingyu was the first to speak.
Only glancing briefly at Li Yiqiu, Old Master Zhong spoke, “That’s something you should ask your good daughter about what she did today.”
Li Yiqiu’s heart sank, feeling extremely uneasy. It was her suggestion for Zhong Mengxuan to intervene midway. Regardless of the reason, Old Master Zhong wouldn’t kick Zhong Mengxuan out at such an event!
She had foreseen that Old Master Zhong would be angry, but now it seemed not as simple as just being angry.
Whereas Zhong Mingyu, who knew nothing, instinctively spoke out, “Dad, did Mengxuan do something wrong again?”
Old Master Zhong scoffed, “Your daughter really has grand ambitions! Now, she doesn’t even regard me at all.”
As they spoke, another car also arrived home, carrying only Zhong Minghao and Zheng Silin.
Zhong Jinghao had taken Lin Wanrou home and was not in the same car. Only Zhong Mengxuan was left inside.
Seeing that Zhong Mengxuan hadn’t gotten out of the car and was planning to head straight to the villa, Old Master Zhong was not angry.
He turned his head to look at Zhong Mingyu, “Let Zhong Mengxuan get out of the car and come in now, I have something to say. If she doesn’t want to come in, then she shouldn’t enter our Zhong family’s gate ever again. I will denounce all relations with her in the newspaper tomorrow.”
Having said that, he didn’t wait for Zhong Mingyu to respond, and directly led Old Madam Zhong and Zhong Niangyao into the house.
Moments later, Zhong Mengxuan followed Zhong Mingyu and Li Yiqiu inside. She kept her head low, utterly afraid to look at Old Master Zhong and Old Madam Zhong seated at the head of the room.
“What, had the guts to do it, but now you don’t have the guts to face it?”
Old Master Zhong’s face showed no superfluous expression, his words not even stern. Yet, this attitude made Zhong Mengxuan shiver involuntarily.
“Grandfather, I–”
She opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say.
“Dad, what exactly did Mengxuan do?” puzzled, Zhong Mingyu spoke up from the side, “Also, weren’t you supposed to meet with the Lu family to discuss the engagement arrangements? Why did Mengxuan come back with you?”
Zhong Mingyu was completely unaware of what Zhong Mengxuan had done. And as for his father deciding to meet with the Lu family alongside the heads of the main house, he had no objections.
Being Lu Chenran’s lover, their presence in such a setting would have been awkward.
Thus, not attending made him more relaxed. Moreover, he didn’t want to go, as seeing such a scene would upset him more, knowing that Zhong Niangyao would soon be legitimately married into the Lu family, while his daughter could only be an unnamed lover.
This stark contrast was very distressing for him.
Li Yiqiu and Zhong Mengxuan, fearing Zhong Mingyu’s opposition, had never revealed their plans to him.
Until now, he was unaware of what Zhong Mengxuan had done.
“Your good daughter, at today’s meeting with the Lu family, showed up uninvited,” Old Master Zhong recounted calmly, “She truly has nerve, able to appear unfazed in such a setting. Such thick-skinned, probably unmatched by anyone!”
His disparaging words turned Zhong Mengxuan’s face pale; she was unable to explain or defend herself.
Old Madam Zhong glanced at Zhong Mengxuan and then at Li Yiqiu, and continued to speak, “Our Zhong family, I’m afraid, cannot accommodate a granddaughter with such grand ambitions.”
With those words, Zhong Mengxuan finally knew fear, involuntarily crying out, “Grandmother.”
She had never imagined that it would be her usually kind and amiable grandmother who would first speak of forsaking her.
Zhong Niangyao, hearing Old Madam Zhong’s words, was initially surprised, but then somewhat understood.
She also knew that Old Madam Zhong’s actions were partly for her benefit and largely for the sake of the Zhong family.
