Chapter 93: Chapter 93: He Who Endures in Secrecy Can Achieve Great Things
Bessie Leclair couldn’t dare show her usual young-lady temper in front of Ignatius Leclair. She timidly called out, "Big Brother," and then prepared to slip away.
She wanted no part of this house and would much rather be in Switzerland.
"Hm." Ignatius responded indifferently and then raised his eyes to look at her. His long and narrow, deeply-set phoenix eyes carried an overwhelming aura of intimidation. That glance froze Bessie in her tracks; she awkwardly stood in place, not daring to run.
Ignatius’s temperament was ever unpredictable, as were his inclinations. He prepared coffee, poured a cup, and sat before the fireplace. His voice remained cold as he asked, "Why did you come back?"
Bessie thought of how she’d sneaked her way back this time and inwardly panicked. She replied, "Father said I’m no longer young. I can’t keep playing around outside. Sooner or later, I need to come back to take on some proper responsibilities and marry early."
The second branch of the Leclair Family—Ignatius’s second uncle and aunt—neither ventured into business nor politics; they were researchers. As a couple deeply engaged in field investigations and experiments across various regions, they rarely returned home. Their only daughter was left to be raised by the old master and Stone Leclair, resulting in Bessie’s spoiled and unruly nature since childhood.
Ignatius’s most favorable impression of the Leclair Family centered on Bessie’s parents. Were it not for this younger sister’s twisted character from an early age, he wouldn’t have treated her with such aloofness.
"When you returned, did you call Jocelyn Yeager?" Ignatius asked lightly, his handsome features shrouded in the steaming mist of coffee, exuding an air of unfathomable depth.
Bessie didn’t dare lie to him. She rushed to nod and said, "Uncle Reginald called. When it came to Delphine Carter, I got scared and called Brother Jocelyn."
Mentioning Delphine’s beating made Bessie tremble slightly once more.
Upon hearing this, Ignatius’s expression immediately turned icy. He had long suspected Jocelyn wouldn’t contact him without reason. Yet now that Reginald knew about Delphine’s beating, he remained utterly indifferent, not even mentioning it. On top of that, his words aggravated Ignatius to the point of nearly causing disaster. Clearly, he had underestimated Jocelyn over the years.
A man who can endure to such a degree will surely achieve great things.
"Jocelyn Yeager is someone you can’t control. If you were to marry him, your life after marriage would be filled with turmoil. Do you still intend to marry him?" Ignatius suddenly asked.
Bessie’s lifelong ambition had always been to marry Jocelyn Yeager. Jocelyn’s personality was gentle and refined; he was handsome and morally upright. Within South Asia, few young men from families of distinction could compare to him. Such an excellent man was one she would never let slip away.
"Marry him," Bessie said through gritted teeth. She thought that the unexpected disaster this time stemmed from Delphine’s scandal with Jocelyn. Otherwise, she’d never have provoked her brother’s wrath and endured four days of confinement.
Ignatius gave a slight nod and said coldly, "I’ll talk to Uncle and Aunt about it."
Bessie was overjoyed, her eyes lighting up with disbelief. Just moments ago, she’d wanted to stick pins in a doll to curse Ignatius. Now, seeing him willing to assist with her marriage, she instantly forgot all the suffering she had endured prior. If her brother intervened in her and Jocelyn’s marriage, it would surely come to fruition easily.
Ignatius no longer wished to converse with her further and signaled that she could leave. Bessie left cheerfully. After being confined for four days, she was eager to go out and indulge herself—SPA treatments, beauty routines, a new hairstyle, shopping—she would refresh herself from head to toe and meet Brother Jocelyn looking her absolute best.
The butler came to report that Mrs. Carter had taken the young master to stay with relatives and intended to be away for some time.
Ignatius nodded. He had always regarded Mrs. Carter with complete indifference. Beatrice Carter was indeed a woman of moderate intellect, but to think she would flee to avoid trouble, taking only her son and entirely disregarding her daughter’s well-being—even when the girl had been beaten into near unconsciousness—was astonishing. He had never seen such a poor excuse for a mother.
The man’s sharp, handsome brows furrowed slightly.
