Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Ignatius Leclair Becomes Capricious, Likes to Spoil Women
The drunken Delphine was as obedient as could be, resembling the 15-year-old girl he first met. Three months after he’d returned from the United Kingdom, Beatrice brought the young Delphine into the Leclair residence.
The petite girl wore a blue cotton dress that had been washed to the point of fading. Her jet-black eyes sparkled faintly, like fragments of starlight. Nervously clutching the hem of her outdated dress, she timidly greeted him, "Hello, brother."
All this time had passed, long enough for Delphine to grow into a woman, and now she was back at his side again.
Ignatius Leclair cupped her small face, his handsome features unreadable. Seeing her curled tightly into the chair like a frightened little thing, clutching at his coat, he watched her silently.
The man stared at her coldly for a long while before pulling his coat from her petite fingers and taking her hand in his large one.
Delphine hadn’t slept so deeply in a long time. In her dreams, she felt as if she were clinging to a raging furnace. The heat made her sweat profusely, and the furnace kept pressing against her closer and closer.
When she woke, it was already the next morning. She found that her hands and feet were pinned against Ignatius’s chest, unable to move.
Delphine froze for a moment, then quickly withdrew her hand. She got out of bed, noticing her crumpled shirt discarded on the floor. She was now wearing a thin, gauzy nightgown of a style she’d never worn before.
On the second day after she moved into the small attic room on the top floor, Ignatius had set aside a section of his walk-in closet for her, filling it with all kinds of nightgowns and cocktail dresses.
Delphine never touched them. Ignatius had a devilish mind. When he wanted to be kind to someone, he would lavish them with everything in the world.
The more intensely he spoiled them, the more devastating their despair would be when he abandoned them.
She was no longer the Delphine Carter from five years ago.
After tidying herself up, Delphine took the black evening gown Mrs. Carter had picked for her the previous night and headed to the set.
Delphine carefully went over the script. The fantasy drama she was filming centered on the peak era of the Human Clan and the banning of demons across the Nine Provinces.
In the great familial clans, there was a long-standing tradition of raising demons to ensure prosperity.
Charles Taylor’s character, a scion of one such family, saved an orphaned girl. Later, as the girl grew up, her Demon Clan blood was awakened, and she was mercilessly hunted down. Only by collecting the Seven Great Treasures of the Nine Provinces could her soul be revived.
To save the woman he loved, the scion embarked on a perilous journey. Along the way, he discovered that the Human Clan was even crueler and more terrifying than the Demon Clan. He vowed to overthrow its tyranny and bring true peace to the Nine Provinces.
Delphine’s character, Lyuzhu, appeared for roughly twenty minutes in the whole movie. She had to portray a girl’s transformation from love to betrayal, and finally to self-sacrifice, in such a short amount of time, which demanded exceptional acting skills and directorial vision.
Tristan, known as a maverick director, was renowned for his abstract and lavish cinematography, and he excelled at handling such themes.
Today, Delphine was set to film a climactic scene from Lyuzhu’s storyline. Lyuzhu discovered that the slave, who she had saved and promised to lead away—Yansheng—was actually there to steal the Chenxiang Pearl. A dangerous confrontation ensued between the two.
The director explained the scene in detail before calling action.
In the scene, Yansheng broke into the forbidden grounds of the Sang Nation to steal the Chenxiang Pearl but was discovered by the Sang Nation elders. Lyuzhu, heartbroken to learn that Yansheng’s theft was for the sake of saving another woman he loved, couldn’t bear to see him die in Sang Nation. She secretly helped him escape and revealed to him that the Chenxiang Pearl in the forbidden grounds was a fake. The real one was with her. She promised to give it to him if he stayed with her for seven days.
The role itself was inherently tragic, and Delphine played it with ease. Her temperament was naturally aloof, and when acting alongside Charles Taylor, she wasn’t overwhelmed at all.
On the contrary, it was Charles who, upon seeing her astonishing beauty in vintage costume and her innate coldness, suddenly realized that this role seemed tailor-made for Delphine Carter. This newcomer was destined to become a star.
