Chapter 222: Chapter 222 Why Did You Come Downstairs, Someone’s About to Lose Their Life Down There (Recommendation for an Additional 500 Words)

"What nonsense are you spouting? I don’t even know you!" Yvonne Wade shouted furiously, her voice trembling with panic as she shot a fearful glance toward Bessie Leclair.

Bessie Leclair, however, was like a clay idol crossing a river—unable to save herself—and immediately turned her head away.

Yvonne Wade was so desperate she was on the verge of tears. Though the Wade Family was a prestigious clan in the southern provinces, they couldn’t compare to the Leclair Family. Even her father had to tread cautiously and greet Ignatius Leclair with a fawning smile whenever they crossed paths.

"I have evidence. This woman gave me ten million—the money was wired directly to my account!" The fat man, drenched in sweat and with eyes blazing with rage, glared at Yvonne Wade and bellowed aggressively.

He had been living quite comfortably in the southern provinces. If it weren’t for this woman approaching him and seducing him in a hundred different ways, how could he have fallen into a predicament that might cost him his life?

Caught in the fat man’s accusations, Yvonne hardened her resolve and snapped angrily, "Who knows where this scumbag came from! He’s clearly out to slander me with malicious intent. I don’t even know what’s going on! Stone, for all these years, the Wade Family has always been loyal to your father. This man is clearly taking bribes to sow discord between our families!"

In this critical moment, Yvonne’s quick thinking surfaced. She shifted the focus to the long-standing connection between the Leclair and Wade Families, subtly bringing up Stone Leclair to strengthen her argument.

But she, a pampered socialite whose days were spent either squandering wealth or tagging along with Bessie to stir up trouble, couldn’t possibly know that the relationship between Stone and Ignatius had long turned as cold as ice. Stone had no power to restrain Ignatius anymore.

Ignatius watched the two of them acting like dogs snarling at each other, his thin lips curving into a faintly chilling smile. His narrow, deep-set phoenix eyes narrowed as his relaxed posture dissolved into something unreadable, lost in thought.

The side hall was dead silent. Ignatius remained quiet, and it wasn’t just Ambrose River who felt the oppressive atmosphere—even Yvonne Wade and Bessie Leclair found their palms moist with nervous sweat, their hearts filled with unease.

Delphine walked out of the bathroom, her skin flushed red from the scalding hot water. She had scrubbed herself a dozen times, only beginning to wash away the nauseating feeling. After getting dressed, she headed downstairs.

Mrs. Guo didn’t dare venture to the top floor and was instead eavesdropping on the commotion from the second floor. When she saw Delphine coming downstairs, she immediately pulled her into one of the side rooms, hastily saying, "Why are you coming down now? People are about to die down there!"

"Delphine, you’re far too bold! How could you dare to strike Bessie? If she complains to the old master, we’ll all be thrown out!" Mrs. Guo was frantic, like an ant on a hot stove, growing more frightened the more she thought about it. Knowing Bessie’s nature, there was no way she’d let go of such a slight.

The autumn night was cold, and though Delphine had just soaked in hot water, her heart remained frozen. She grasped Mrs. Guo’s hand, her eyes slightly reddened, and looked down as she rasped, "Mother, are power, status, and wealth really that important to you?"

Now, even calling her "mother" was something Delphine could only say behind closed doors.

Mrs. Guo’s expression changed as she hesitated, then said firmly, "Of course! When I gave birth to you back then, we didn’t have the money, and I almost died in some black-market clinic. I swore to myself in that moment that I would never live like a rat in the gutter again. Don’t be fooled by my lack of status in the Leclair household. Outside of it, no one would dare show me any disrespect. That’s the power of status and influence."

"At least," she sighed softly. "At least we’re fortunate not to appear as mother and daughter to the public." She lifted her eyes and stared at Mrs. Guo, her gaze unwavering as she enunciated coldly, "As long as Little Zhen is here, you’ll always have a place in the Leclair estate. From now on, you will forever be my ’aunt.’ Ignore whatever I plan to do."

Mrs. Guo was so alarmed by her words that her heart raced wildly. She immediately reached out, trying to grab Delphine in a panic. "What are you going to do?" she asked, her voice full of fear.

"Debts must be repaid. A life for a life." Delphine’s expression grew icy, her tone flat yet chilling.
