Chapter 198: Chapter 198: The old man might be so angry that even a hundred years later, the lid of his coffin won’t stay shut.
Jocelyn Yeager was rejected by Delphine’s sharp words. Her expression was indifferent, showing a hint of coldness and aloofness, completely devoid of the naive and carefree demeanor she once had. His face darkened.
"I was reckless today. I won’t let this happen again. I hope we can still be friends," he said hoarsely, taking a step back.
Delphine nodded, avoiding his burning gaze.
"The riding outfit is in your size. No one else has worn it," Jocelyn said, withdrawing his gaze and standing up to leave.
As the door closed, his handsome face was framed by the narrowing gap of the door. Watching her slender and slim back, his eyes flashed with a restrained, dark glimmer.
This was his final indulgence and foolishness; from then on, he could move decisively down that irreversible path.
Delphine let out a small sigh of relief after Jocelyn left.
Bessie Leclair was prone to irrationality. If she found out that Delphine met Jocelyn in private, she might lose her mind.
She picked up the brand-new, stylish riding outfit on the sofa, changed into it, and soon saw Maximilian coming over with Leah.
"Why, all of a sudden, are you competing in equestrian sports?" Leah frowned upon seeing her already dressed, saying, "With your luck, why do you attract unnecessary drama?"
"Has Bessie always laid traps like this for you in the past?"
Delphine shook her head and said with a smile, "Not exactly. She only plays tricks when there’s a crowd."
Ignatius Leclair was currently very interested in her, and Bessie’s underhanded tactics were completely ineffective in his presence.
The Leclair family’s fourth young lady seemed to have figured out that Ignatius would not publicly disclose their relationship, and thus tried to embarrass her in front of others.
"I’ll race against her. My equestrian skills are not just for show—I studied under a renowned master." Leah said confidently, pushing Delphine to change clothes. Her strikingly beautiful face paused slightly, as she searched her mind for memories of her ability to ride horses while being unable to recall much else.
Delphine blinked in surprise and said gently, "Have you been starting to remember certain things recently?"
"Not really, but after arriving in Southeast Asia, I’ve found myself adapting easily to this lifestyle. Little Delphine, do you think I might originally be from there?" Leah pouted with her rosy lips, elongating her words, and tugged at Delphine’s arm, playfully acting spoiled.
"Impossible. With your appearance, if you were in one of Southeast Asia’s wealthy families, you’d already be highly sought after. People would fight over you!"
Delphine joked, musing that Leah’s previous life was likely no less extraordinary than her current one.
She wasn’t particularly interested in horse racing, but seeing Leah’s enthusiasm, she decided to change her outfit.
Fortunately, the Yeager Family’s estate had plenty of riding outfits in various sizes, likely prepared for the regular gatherings of wealthy children for horse-riding, with many brand-new, unused clothes ready for use.
"Let’s go. I’ll stand in for you and have a showdown with the fourth lady of the Leclair Family," Leah said after changing and tying up her long hair in a polished, elegant manner, her features brimming with sophistication and charm.
"Alright," Delphine replied with a smile.
Maximilian felt relieved knowing Leah would be standing in for Miss Delphine in the equestrian competition. The Squire siblings were never ones to be underestimated; the fourth lady’s plans would likely go up in smoke.
Seeing the situation would not escalate, Maximilian went off to report to Ignatius Leclair.
Ignatius Leclair was waiting for Jocelyn Yeager’s arrival when the call from the Leclair family patriarch came through.
"Is the ten-percent share that Bessie mentioned something you gave her?" The patriarch’s voice thundered over the line as soon as the call connected. "Do you think you can keep dumping all the responsibility? This is absolutely outrageous."
Learning of this, the patriarch’s first thought was always to blame his unruly eldest grandson. Among the younger generation of the Leclair family, the one he loved and resented the most was this grandson.
This young man had a sharp mind and cunning methods, combined with exceptional talent. Years ago, when he had the audacity to abandon two decades of political aspirations to pivot into the business world, the patriarch had already seen in him the gambler’s instincts lurking in his bones.
If Ignatius ever felt his commercial empire could no longer satisfy his desire for conquest and decided to step away completely, the patriarch feared he might rage so fiercely that even a century later, his coffin lid wouldn’t stay shut.
