Chapter 165: Chapter 165 Her Heart is as Cold and Hard as a Knife, Incapable of Warmth
Maximilian’s sudden return broke the deadlock in the side hall.
Anyone sheltered under Ignatius Leclair’s wing—even Stone Leclair would have to think carefully before making a move.
When Delphine helped Mrs. Gu out, her body was drenched in cold sweat. Mrs. Gu was so frightened that she couldn’t walk on her own and had to rely on others for support.
As she was leaving, Delphine glanced back at Jocelyn Yeager. Bessie Leclair was clinging to his arm, throwing a tantrum. The man’s handsome face remained calm and composed, with a faint smile. When he looked up, his gaze was restrained, elusive, and unreadable, accompanied by a subtle smile directed at her.
Delphine felt a bit dazed. She couldn’t help but sense that the neighborly older brother who had treated her so well in their youth had now become someone even she couldn’t see through.
"Miss Delphine, you and Mrs. Gu will have to make do at a hotel tonight," Maximilian said as he came over to lend a hand and help support Mrs. Gu. "Mrs. Gu’s injuries, I fear, make going to the hospital impossible."
Leclair Family’s properties in Southeast Asia are plentiful. Previously, the Northern Town villa had already been transferred to Miss Delphine’s name. But when Maximilian finalized the paperwork, Miss Delphine was still in Berlin, leaving no time to inform her about this matter.
Maximilian remained cautious. Given Mrs. Gu’s hazy understanding of things, it was better to keep her in the dark about the property and Emerald Lake Villa for the time being.
"Staying in a hotel will be fine." Given the current state of Leclair Manor, none of them dared reside there until Ignatius returned.
"What about little Zeng? It’s better to bring him back from school first," Delphine mused. Because of the complicated relationships within the Leclair Family, Mrs. Gu had long apprehensions toward Ignatius Leclair. This led to little Zeng being sent to boarding school at a young age. Thinking about it now felt ironic—after all, they still required Ignatius’s protection to leave unharmed in the end.
"Yes, I’ll go pick him up right away," Mrs. Gu said hurriedly, alarmed by the thought.
"I’ll handle it. You’re injured and might scare him," Delphine said calmly. She noted down little Zeng’s school address. Ever since her return, her challenging circumstances had made her hesitant to bond closely with the child, leaving her with lingering guilt.
Maximilian called Dongzi, instructing him to escort Mrs. Gu to the hotel for rest and to find a doctor. Meanwhile, Maximilian personally drove Delphine to fetch young Master Leclair from his boarding school.
When Delphine arrived at the school, the young boy had already fallen asleep. He was gently woken up by his teacher midway through the night. Rubbing his large eyes, he burst into joy upon seeing the pretty lady who had come to pick him up. Carrying his backpack, he happily left the school.
Mrs. Gu’s face lit up with joy when she saw Delphine bring back her unharmed son to the hotel. She embraced him tightly. After arranging accommodations for the mother and son, Delphine finally exhaled a breath of relief. Her head spun a little from exhaustion, but she held herself together and thanked Maximilian and Dongzi. After the night’s chaos, dawn was already breaking.
Maximilian checked the time and asked Dongzi to go back and rest. Then, in a low voice, he said, "Leclair’s flight lands this afternoon. Miss Delphine, you should get some rest. I’ll drive over to pick you up then."
Delphine felt a bit disoriented and raspily asked, "Wasn’t it said that the old lady still couldn’t be moved, and he wouldn’t return until later?"
She had always assumed Maximilian had forged orders from Ignatius to intimidate Stone Leclair into submission.
Maximilian didn’t comment further. He had simply reported the situation here to Ignatius, and Ignatius immediately boarded a plane.
"The old lady’s condition has improved. Leclair is making a brief return to handle some matters in Southeast Asia. Once things settle here, he’ll leave again," Maximilian replied with a smile. He knew well enough—without Ignatius back, even if Miss Delphine managed to endure tonight, she wouldn’t make it through tomorrow night.
