Chapter 112: Chapter 112: Are you coming back by yourself, or should I pick you up?
Delphine listened to the voice in her dream, an exact replica, her entire body drawn tight like a taut string, unable to say a single word.
Griffith Squire stood by the window, looking at the night outside. Hearing the rapid, panicked breathing coming through Delphine’s phone, his almond-shaped eyes narrowed deeply as he laughed, "Are you coming back on your own, or shall I come fetch you?"
Anyone familiar with him knew that Griffith Squire loved to smile. The more charming his smile, the more ruthless his actions.
Delphine’s face turned slightly pale as she suppressed her panic, speaking slowly, one word at a time, "I am not Little Sweet."
Upon hearing this, Griffith’s lips curled into a smile as he sighed, "Why don’t you guess? Will Ignatius Leclair package you up and deliver you to my bed directly, or will he sell you off for a good price?"
"If you’re sick, go get treatment." Her gaze grew icy as she abruptly hung up the phone, her chest heaving violently.
No one understood better than her—Griffith Squire was a bona fide madman. Back then, she had left precisely because Griffith had shown an unusual interest in her. She never expected their paths to cross again, and right at her doorstep no less.
She could only hope that Griffith would restrain himself, mindful that this was Southeast Asia, and refrain from doing something insane.
She couldn’t sleep the whole night. It wasn’t until dawn approached that Delphine finally drifted off. By noon, a call from Kyla Zamora woke her, who excitedly informed her that she had arranged a meeting with the director of *The Past of Qinghe*, Lian Jiang.
Delphine rose, freshened up, and left the house, coincidentally encountering Stone Leclair’s car at the doorstep as she stepped out.
A man in his fifties, still lean but no longer exuding gentleness. Sitting in the car, his gaze was sharp and scrutinizing, a picture of seriousness—a stark contrast to the madness he exhibited the day he lashed out at his enemy with a whip.
Delphine’s heart skipped a beat as Stone Leclair’s car entered the Leclair estate. Stone had vanished for over a month; she didn’t know if his return was for a prolonged stay or just a brief respite.
She hit the gas, deliberately pushing aside her chaotic thoughts, and drove to meet Director Lian Jiang.
When she arrived at the agreed location and saw Lian Jiang, Delphine was startled. She hadn’t expected the director to be so young. The man looked to be in his twenties, his face gaunt yet handsome, with a bit of stubble, dressed in a gray, vintage-collared tunic and casual pants, exuding an air of melancholy.
"Miss Gu, hello. I’m Lian Jiang." Lian Jiang lifted his head, nodded, and smiled at her.
"Director Lian, nice to meet you." Delphine took a seat.
"I’m delighted that Miss Gu accepted this role." Lian Jiang’s voice was steady and measured, without flamboyant language, as he spoke directly, "Theodore Hughes recommended you to me. To be honest, before I met you, I had doubts about whether you could handle this character."
News spread quickly within the industry. Delphine had starred in Theodore Hughes’s *Twin Flowers*. Though the movie had yet to be released, Theodore had spoken highly of her. It was after hearing Theodore’s unreserved praise that Lian Jiang decided to invite her to take on a role in *The Past of Qinghe*.
Delphine appreciated his straightforwardness and smiled, "Has Director Lian changed his mind now?"
Lian Jiang nodded and said, "The audience for this film is relatively niche. My plan is to take it to competitions and try to win awards. Only award-winning works, coupled with strategic promotion, will draw national attention to such a heavy, somber piece. So, for the female lead, beauty and popularity are indispensable."
In truth, Lian Jiang had been extremely cautious when casting the female lead for this film. He studied Delphine’s styling in *Blue Abyss* as well as stills from *Twin Flowers* before finally extending the invitation.
*The Past of Qinghe* is a female-centric film. The male protagonist never appears throughout the story. For a woman to carry over an hour of screen time requires an exceptionally strong actress. Theodore Hughes and Tristan might trust her acting skills, so that wasn’t a concern for Lian. But upon meeting her in person, he saw that her unique blend of icy poise and quiet allure could embody the heroine perfectly, and he finally felt reassured.
"Did you create this type of film solely to win awards, Director Lian?" Delphine’s gaze was calm and composed as she asked softly.
"After becoming an adult, I ran away from home, wandering for three years. Eventually, I woke up and came back to earnestly work and support my parents. This film is not just for awards; it’s also for justice." Lian Jiang met her gaze directly as he spoke.
Seeing his candor, Delphine felt an inexplicable warmth ripple through her heart. Her fingers curled tightly, her mind turning over and savoring those words: *for justice*.
Delphine and Lian Jiang had a pleasant exchange that lasted over two hours, at the end of which it was officially confirmed—she would star as the lead in *The Past of Qinghe*. She was to join the production team in three days.
Delphine scheduled everything carefully. After attending the Squire Family banquet, she would then head to the set to start filming.
