Chapter 704: Chapter 296: Challenge Ends_4

Now, these dozen rabbits’ tails had become the only source of food for number six; not willing to eat them, he cleaned them and then threw them into the pot to make a soup, surviving on the sparse grease dots and not-so-plentiful grass roots until the sixtieth day.

On the sixtieth day of the challenge, Lin Yang came out of the shelter early as dawn just began to break.

Thinking of leaving this godforsaken place and returning to the warm comfort of civilized society, he couldn’t sleep at all after getting up to add wood to the fire in the middle of the night.

He dragged out the stockpile of smoked fish and bear meat from the storage cellar, cut off a large piece of raw Wolf Weasel meat for Little White to gorge on, and then sorted through all the equipment and supplies he had brought with him.

Out of sight, out of mind, Lin Yang didn’t realize just how much he had accumulated over the past two months.

A thick layer of rabbit skins, tanned Black Bear hide, porcupine skin, over thirty pieces of uneaten smoked fish, with about one third of the bear meat still remaining.

When ice fishing ended yesterday evening, he brought all these bottom-padding furs back to the shelter. Before leaving, specialized staff would come to take inventory and then report.

Besides that, an eagle stand made from pine tenons and mortises, crude pottery jars fired in the kiln, coarse pottery bowls for holding rice, nets handwoven for eagle catching, rabbit-skin sleeves for eagle training and whatnot - the open ground outside the shelter was laid out with a large array of these items.

Lin Yang started the live broadcast and showed off these life-sustaining items for one last time.

Glancing at the time, there was still more than an hour left until the agreed ten in the morning. Without having lunch, he took the two biggest smoked fish and, with Little White, strode towards the center of the lake.

Approaching the snow hut where he had been ice fishing for over ten days, he saw Big White wandering at the doorway from afar.

Seeing Lin Yang coming, Big White ran over in a little trot and began to act clingy with all sorts of whimpering sounds. Lin Yang felt a complex mix of emotions and placed the smoked fish he was carrying on the ground.

"Eat up, I’m leaving today, and from now on, you’ll have to rely on yourself!"

Lin Yang didn’t know if Big White could understand, but he stroked its fur while watching the little guy wolf down the food.

Once Big White was satisfied, the helicopter from the television crew arrived to pick him up, flying overhead from a distance.

Lin Yang took one last look behind him and walked away with firm steps.

By the time he returned to the shelter, the staff had already arrived. Under the watch of several cameras, they publicly announced the results of the challenge and shook hands with Lin Yang amiably.

After taking inventory of all the supplies, it was time for Lin Yang to say goodbye to Little White. In front of everyone, he removed the Eagle Hat from Little White’s head.

Little White, who had never seen so many people, instantly panicked, stepping on Lin Yang’s arms and struggling nonstop, letting out a series of uneasy squawks as though facing a mortal threat.

Seeing this, Lin Yang put the hat back on Little White, and then the staff members brought over a pair of scissors to snip off the jesses tied to its legs. After that, Lin Yang carried Little White a few dozen meters away before taking the hat off again.

Once farther away from the strangers, Little White finally quieted down considerably, adjusting to the light and loosening the feathers on its body, slightly uncomfortable without the jesses on its legs anymore.

Lin Yang stroked Little White’s fur one last time from head to tail, and facing the breeze, he lifted his arm.

Unaware of the farewell, Little White thought it was just another routine lure training, spread its wings and took off with great effort, quickly flying up to the high sky following Lin Yang’s previous training, soon reduced to a tiny dot.

Lin Yang looked up, shading his eyes, and murmured to himself, "The moments day by day we spent together, along with those spectacular memories of cooperative hunting, are my precious mental wealth. Today, I’m leaving and I’m giving you back your freedom.

With your hunting skills learned, and your physique robust, you will surely survive in the harsh wilderness. Next year, take a vast territory for yourself, find an outstanding mate, raise a bunch of offspring, and pass down your excellent genes. Goodbye to the worldly society; we may never meet again!"

"Brothers, the sixty-day challenge has ended. Thank you all for your company over this long period. I’m leaving now, will rest at home for a few days, and will continue to broadcast for you all, goodbye!"

The drone gave Little White, who was soaring in the blue sky, another close-up, and Lin Yang ended the live broadcast. After packing up his equipment, he boarded the plane without looking back.

After being away for so long, it was time to go home.
