Chapter 595: Chapter 259: The Giant Dogfish
"Isn’t that wrong, host? Aren’t all salmon deep-sea fish? This is clearly freshwater, right?"
Lin Yang saw the doubtful comment and chuckled, "Silver Trout and Chinook salmon are actually ocean fish, it’s just that their life and reproduction habits are different from other deep-sea fish."
"Every year during the breeding season, these salmonid species migrate from the ocean into freshwater to spawn. After the hatchlings emerge, they return to the ocean to live. After two to four years, once matured, they come back to freshwater to spawn again. Born in the sea, die in the river, and so the cycle repeats."
"Now, at the end of summer, we might be lucky enough to see the summer run of Chinook salmon, but our current location is quite far from the mouth of the river. If we want to see this phenomenon, we need to go further upstream. Maybe we’ll head up there over the next few days."
After this bit of education, the live stream audience was fascinated by the remarkable migratory habits.
"Alright, stop daydreaming, we’ve got our lunch for today. But one fish isn’t enough for three people. I’ll try to catch a few more, and at lunch, Uncle Victor can make us some Silver Trout sashimi."
After giving the heads-up, Uncle Victor simply rinsed the Silver Trout meat in an aluminum basin.
He then changed the water and repeated the egg rinsing process, after which he took out a sieve with a small mesh and rubbed the roe against it, efficiently separating each individual egg.
This traditional method of processing Silver Trout eggs by locals is not something you can see in restaurants. Everyone watched intently, even starting to discuss the taste of the eggs.
As for the subsequent processing, it was even simpler. Uncle Victor just sprinkled a tiny bit of fine salt before setting a small bowl of eggs aside.
With the Silver Trout as a start, Lin Yang continued to fish in the shallows. However, the water flow at the mouth of the river bend was somewhat gentle, and there weren’t as many fish as expected.
After searching the area with dozens of casts, he didn’t catch any more fish.
So he called out to Uncle Victor, "Uncle Victor, let’s change spots and keep looking upstream. I feel like there aren’t many fish around here."
"Alright! Hold tight, we’ll continue upstream," Uncle Victor said as he restarted the engine and moved upstream.
From the position of the river branch to the main channel of the Kubi River, the surrounding environment had changed significantly. The water level remained shallow, but you could occasionally see fallen trees along the bank.
These were trees toppled during the high water period, only becoming visible as the water level fell.
After traveling for about half an hour, the once wide riverbed of the Kubi River suddenly constricted, followed by another drop in water level. The river water was so clear that you could see the mud and sand at the bottom of the area beneath your feet.
"This area is quite shallow. If we want to continue upstream, we might need to get out and push the boat. What do you want to do?" Uncle Victor turned his head to Lin Yang, seeking his opinion.
Lin Yang surveyed the surrounding environment.
Looking downstream from the position of the boat, the area was a transition from rapid to slow-flowing shallows. He hadn’t noticed anything while they were moving, but now that they stopped, he realized it was a good spot.
"Don’t rush forward just yet, let me see if there’s anything here. This area looks pretty good."
"Okay," Victor nodded in agreement.
Lin Yang randomly selected a spot, turned around, and cast his line downstream.
Strangely, just by changing to a new area, his catch improved significantly.
On the first cast, before the bait even reached the bottom, he felt a fish attacking it. He heaved the rod to set the hook, and the force coming from below was much greater than that of the previous Silver Bottle.
"Wow, this is a big one!" Lin Yang called out, immediately adjusting the drag, his usually calm expression turning serious and focused.
The fish below was indeed strong, and its means of escaping after being hooked were different. Unlike the Silver Trout with its steady power and intermittent bursts of speed, this fish’s surges seemed endless. It pulled the line out for at least thirty meters straight before the speed gradually decreased.
With plenty of line left on the spool, nearly a hundred meters, he wasn’t in a hurry to reel the fish in. Patiently, he dueled with it, back and forth for at least five minutes, until finally exhausting the fish and slowly pulling it to the side of the boat.
When the fish emerged, Lin Yang was startled by its slithering shape and snake-like head.
"Holy smokes, what the heck is this?" he exclaimed, nearly dropping his fish gripper.
In the camera’s view, the fish had a large, flat head shaped like a snake’s, dark colored with slight patterned markings. Its neck was as thick as an adult’s fist, and as it struggled on the water’s surface, you could faintly see the wavy ripples it caused. For a moment, he even doubted he had caught a fish, thinking it might be a snake or an eel.
Then came Uncle Victor’s comforting voice, "Don’t panic, that’s a big dogfish! Take it slow, it’s swallowed the whole lure. Be careful its teeth don’t fray the line."
Hearing the words "dogfish," Lin Yang steadied his nerves. He had caught dogfish before, but they were much smaller than this one.
