Chapter 556: Chapter 246: The New Camp_2
The children were very eager for the snacks, but they seemed afraid of offending Lin Yang and the other foreigners with yellow skin, so even though they gathered around, they did so timidly.
Yue’er demonstrated great patience in distributing the snacks, giving each piece of candy or snack to the children, who grinned happily upon receiving them.
They hadn’t even finished unloading the supplies from the boat when her snacks were already handed out.
Some kids had a bottle of cola, others a few packets of snow rice cakes, and still others a handful of candies; in short, everyone really liked the beautiful big sister who handed out treats.
Several older children even picked a few unknown flowers to give to Yue’er.
Humans, being higher animals, can communicate through actions, expressions, and eye contact, even when they don’t speak the same language.
Yue’er handed out snacks, made funny faces with them, and put the wildflowers they gave her in her hair, quickly becoming one with these native kids.
Meanwhile, at the other end, after the supplies were moved, the reception staff of the new campsite got the news and hurried back to formally meet Lin Yang and his group.
He was a black elder who looked to be over fifty years old.
His curly, graying hair tightly clung to his scalp, making him appear even older than Baom, who had brought Lin Yang and his group over.
Wearing a cheap, old-style T-shirt from China, he was thin, and what struck Lin Yang most was the long, narrow scar extending from the cheekbone to the corner of his left eye.
"His name is Tataro, the Chief of this native village and the most experienced Catfish Hunter in the village. He will also be our new Fishing Guide after we arrive at this camp," Sun Zheng briefly introduced, as Lin Yang shook hands with the local man.
Tataro also greeted Sun Zheng in the local language, which Lin Yang couldn’t understand.
But from the speed of his speech and his expression, one could tell that this guide was more talkative than Baom, constantly speaking as if trying to gain the trust of his new employers.
Sun Zheng translated, "Tatalo Village Chief says he extends a welcome to all of us on behalf of the whole village and will bring a very special local lunch to welcome everyone at noon. However, I have already declined on your behalf, assuming you would not be interested."
Upon hearing this, Lin Yang looked curious, Declined it?
"What kind of food?"
"Local delicacy, roasted monkey! If you want to try it, I’ll tell him right away!"
Lin Yang immediately shook his head when he heard "roasted monkey."
He’d rather pass; even if the food tasted good, it still gave him the illusion of cannibalism, so he decided not to try it.
"What about our fishing plans? Are they set for the afternoon? It’s a bit hot." Lin Yang continued to ask.
"No, fishing for catfish is a bit different from other fish; most of the catfish here are nocturnal, hiding and sleeping in various places during the day. If all goes well, we’ll gather in the evening and fish at night!
Furthermore, Tatalo Village Chief has prepared a very effective local bait for us. I’ve seen it before, and it made quite an impression on me. I think you should get to know it," Sun Zheng added.
"Great!" Lin Yang did not continue to question it but nodded in agreement.
Compared to the last camp, the new campsite was noticeably better with not only electricity but also larger wooden houses with better natural light from the windows.
Everyone had their own room, which was quite spacious, and to Lin Yang’s surprise, there was also a large wooden tub, nearly a meter tall, for bathing in his and Yue’er’s room.
Besides Baom, who had transported them and then left, Sun Zheng, Lin Yang, Yue’er, and the two hired guards all settled in the campsite.
That’s how the members of the team settled in.
For lunch, they did not accept the kindness of Tatalo Village Chief but used their own supplies to cook, with a local woman who could cook Chinese food acting as the chef.
Vegetables, fresh fish, and rice; although her skills weren’t exquisite, the combination of meat and vegetables was reasonable, and there wasn’t much to complain about.
After lunch and a brief nap, at around three in the afternoon, Sun Zheng took Lin Yang to the house of Chief Tataro.
It was a wooden house that was slightly larger than the other native ones.
Built on a mound closest to the riverbank, the outside was adorned with various synthetic garments, indicating that the life of the village chief was much better than that of ordinary natives.
"I made an appointment with the village chief already, is your camera ready? What’s coming up is a rare opportunity to get up close with these native bait for fishing catfish. I guarantee it’s going to make quite an impression on you!" Sun Zheng said with a smile, something special flickering in his eyes that made Lin Yang feel a bit uneasy.
"Why do I have the feeling you’re up to no good? You’re not planning on making a fool of me, are you?" Lin Yang looked into Sun Zheng’s eyes and asked.
"Er... of course not, I can assure you it’s authentically secret native bait, it’s just... it’s just a bit smelly, that’s all."
After spending a few days together, Sun Zheng and Lin Yang had become quite familiar with each other and had dropped their initial reserve, but now facing Lin Yang’s intense gaze, Sun Zheng felt a bit uneasy.
"A bit smelly? Fishing for catfish, it wouldn’t be using fermented animal innards, would it?" Lin Yang guessed, based on his understanding of fishing.
"Ah, you already knew, huh? And here I was thinking of surprising you," Sun Zheng scratched his head, as his plan to catch Lin Yang off guard fell through.
"This... is it really so? Alright then, let’s have the village chief show us just how amazing it is. I’m quite looking forward to it."
