Chapter 483: Chapter 224: The School of Fish Has Arrived
"Can you just tell us what exactly you’re planning to do?" Zhang Lin felt completely overwhelmed, and he noticed that Captain Harry’s expression was also a bit off.
Lin Yang explained with a smile, "Just consider if my analysis makes sense. First of all, we’re chumming with fish chunks, which can certainly attract the bluefin, but dead fish only really appeal to the smaller individuals; the clever big fish are hard to fool and very alert."
"Yeah, right, that makes sense."
"So, what if we process the fish chunks into a paste? What happens if we toss that in? The bits are too small for the bluefin to eat properly, right?"
"Yeah, and then what?"
"If the bluefin can’t feed on it, smaller fish will get the chance, right? Captain Harry mentioned earlier that there are herring in these waters. Do you think a school of herring could be attracted to this kind of meat paste?"
When the school of herring shows up, the bluefin tuna chasing the herring will follow them, won’t they? Natural big herring definitely won’t resist, right?
If that happens, won’t our chances of fishing increase? It’s the same principle as first catching a baitfish with a hook and then using the baitfish to catch the big one.
After hearing Lin Yang’s explanation, Zhang Lin pondered for a few seconds and felt there was indeed some truth in it.
"When you put it like that, it seems like it could really work, we might have a chance."
"See, that’s settled then. Captain Harry, what’s the best time window this afternoon? Let’s make preparations in advance."
With Zhang Lin’s translation, Captain Harry understood Lin Yang’s idea and said with sparkling eyes, "The activity of the golden spearfish is closely related to the herring. It starts around three in the afternoon and continues until dusk, which are their most active times."
Lin Yang glanced at the time: "It’s already past two, let’s give it a try in advance. Worst case scenario, if it doesn’t work, we’re only wasting half a box of mixed fish."
"Alright, what do we need to do? Let’s all work together." All three of them started getting excited at this point.
There’s really no trick to chumming with fish meat at sea. It’s simply a matter of letting Captain Harry identify the direction of the underwater currents and then tossing handfuls of fish paste in the direction upwind of the current, just waiting for the fish to arrive.
It must be said, releasing bait with the scent of blood and high concentrations of fish protein into the water worked better than just cutting up a few pieces of fish haphazardly.
After only about 10 minutes, near the chumming spot, they could already make out a school of slender unidentified small fish.
Lin Yang switched to the equipment for catching baitfish and casually fished a few times. At about ten meters deep, he found the fish he was hoping for: herring.
He tentatively fished at different depths and found a considerable number of herring. Without even deliberately letting them off the hook, he managed to catch three fairly large ones on a single string of hooks.
Just as Captain Harry had said, the size of the herring active in the deep-sea region was visibly larger than in shallow areas, with some weighing around seven or eight ounces to almost a pound.
Without a doubt, the school of plump herring had arrived!
Soon, Lin Yang called the captain to set up the kite fishing, but just as Captain Harry was busy preparing everything, Lin Yang held him back.
"Give me the fishing rig; I need to make a slight adjustment."
"What’s up now, Brother Yang?" Zhang Lin asked, curious.
Lin Yang weighed the fish in the water and said, "The baitfish is a bit too large, strong enough that if we throw it in like this, it will fight for its life and potentially drag the kite underwater. If the big fish can see the fishing line, what’s the point of kite fishing? Let’s make a small adjustment."
After saying that, Lin Yang took out a pair of scissors and casually snipped the tail fin and a pectoral fin, altering the previously symmetrical fish fins.
With that slight adjustment in the details, the baitfish, momentarily unable to balance its swimming posture, was restrained by the force of the kite, keeping it at the surface instead of diving down.
"Alright, go ahead and keep releasing the fish paste. I estimate the big bluefin is en route. I have a feeling we’re going to hook a big one this afternoon."
"Haha, a fisherman’s hunch is sometimes very accurate. I hope we have a good catch!" Zhang Lin added.
With the preparations nearly complete, Lin Yang asked Yue’er to start the live stream again. The viewers, who had been eagerly waiting, immediately flocked to the live room.
"Did you catch anything yet? Did you catch anything? You said you’d start streaming after lunch, but what time is it now?"
"Exactly, I’ve been waiting the whole time, checked several times but no stream, even the farm’s donkey wouldn’t rest this much."
"Host, has the enemy across the water caught any fish, or is it still a 3:3 tie?"
As Lin Yang dealt with the viewers’ teasing, suddenly the kite above dipped as if an invisible hand had fiercely pulled it down.
In two seconds, the fishing line tightened, and the reel emitted the frantic sound of the drag letting line out.
"Oh man, we’ve got a fish on!" Lin Yang put down the spoon he was using for chumming and turned to run toward the fishing pole at the railing.
Captain Harry was closer to the rod.
By the time Lin Yang rushed over, Captain Harry had already grabbed the rod, forcefully set the hook with a jerk, and firmly held the rod to adjust the reel drag.
