Chapter 456: Chapter 215: Large Equipment
The next day, even though Lin Yang and his team were mentally prepared, they still needed to make some adjustments to their equipment.
This time, they were still using the sea fishing rods awarded by the atlas, which while not looking very thick, could handle anything under 800 kilograms and he had already used this set of equipment to catch Big Marlins, Big Swordfish and a world-record Yellowfin Tuna. It was certainly sufficient to handle the Giant Grouper.
But since this competition was about power, they couldn’t afford to waste too much time with big fish underwater, so he needed to prepare some additional gear, such as a high-quality ’fighting belt.’.
The fighting belt didn’t provide any extra power, but by squatting and leaning back, the angler could focus the strength of their calves, thighs, and abdomen onto the belt, significantly increasing the efficiency of body force application.
This time, Lin Yang had invested heavily in the best fighting belt he could find. He tried it on and found its design to be very reasonable.
However, before using it, he needed to check whether there was any rule against using this item in the competition.
Zhang Lin looked it over several times and said, "I’ve seen similar devices on forums; people have used them when challenging Bull Sharks. According to international fishing rules, gear that doesn’t provide extra power is allowed. To avoid disputes, it’s best to ask the officials to verify before the competition starts in two days, so we don’t give others a handle to criticize us."
"Okay, that’s settled then. Rest for two more days, and then continue the fight."
Actually, on the afternoon of the third day, they had already driven to the hotel by the Gulf of Mexico.
Early the next morning, before dawn, Lin Yang was up early and got ready.
While fishing for Big Mouth Bass, a medium-small fish, one could skimp on breakfast, but catching a Giant Grouper required a full breakfast, or else there would be no strength.
Milk, bread, and a medium-rare steak filled Lin Yang’s stomach; then everyone got into the car and headed straight for the designated competition spot.
The gathering place for fishing the Giant Grouper was chosen to be a medium-sized pier less than a kilometer from the sea-crossing bridge at the Gulf of Mexico.
When they arrived at the competition gathering place, they were instantly amazed by the sight.
A huge parking lot, filled with all sorts of large vehicles, muscle cars like Raptors and Dodge Rams were common, and many cars were covered in various fish-related decals, giving them a distinctive look.
After parking the car and making their way to the temporary platform set up for the competition, Lin Yang and his team encountered even more international participants.
The first round of competition had been a draw from different places, so although the venue was expansive, they didn’t see many other competitors.
But here, eighty competitors from different countries gathered together, all of them fully armed and ready.
Lin Yang swept his gaze around, and sure enough, at least half of these competitors weighed no less than 440 pounds (200 kg), each one big and strong, built like an ox.
Both he and Wang Feng were around 5’11" tall and weighed about 160 pounds, which isn’t short among East Asians, but compared to these muscular heavyweights, they looked like skinny dogs.
The arrival of Lin Yang and his partner soon caused a stir in the waiting area, as they were currently the first in points rankings.
However, the foreign competitors didn’t seem to take them seriously. To them, even though they ranked first, it was as if they didn’t, because by their physiques, they simply didn’t look capable of catching the Giant Grouper, so their previously high scores were of no use.
After arriving, Lin Yang first went to the competition platform to check in, and then he spoke to the officials about using external wearable fishing gear.
Just then, a towering black man over 6’5" tall, chewing gum, approached him and said, "Hey, are you Lin Yang, the Chinese guy who caught the mutated Big Mouth Bass?"
The big man’s voice was deep and his words carried a hint of disdain.
Lin Yang looked up slightly and replied, "Hello, I am. What can I do for you?"
"My name is Gao Bai. It won’t be long before you remember it forever. I’m representing the United States in this fight, aiming to crush you in the shortest time possible. I heard your casting skills are very good, but let me remind you, catching Big Mouth Bass might need casting skills, while for the Giant Grouper, what’s needed is explosive power, none of those damn skills are of any use."
Lin Yang grinned and nodded, "Thanks for the advice."
"You may be able to laugh now, but I doubt you’ll be able to during the competition. I’ve alone caught Bull Sharks weighing over 500 pounds; these two to three hundred-pound Giant Groupers are no pressure for me."
Lin Yang nodded again: "You’re very impressive. If you could be a bit more polite, it might be even better. This is an international fishing tournament, not a verbal mudslinging contest. I hope you can do better."
A few straightforward words left the muscular black man stunned.
In American culture, which holds strength in high esteem, boasting of one’s physical and other abilities has been a primary way to earn respect from peers.
But this method was utterly useless against this young Chinese man.
Lin Yang did not argue or doubt his words, but also showed no signs of submission or capitulation. After saying so much, the determination in Lin Yang’s eyes hadn’t wavered at all.
